Learning is connected to instruction and direction, and boys get more of
that than girls do all through school. Why? Partly because teachers tend
to ques- tion the students who they expect will have the answer. Since
girls traditionally
don't do so well as boys in such “masculine” subjects as math and
science, they're called on least in those classes. But girls are called
on most in verbal and reading classes, where boys are expected to have
the trouble. The trouble is in our culture, not in our chromosome. In
Germany, everything academic is considered masculine, most teachers are
men, and girls have the reading problems.
