일상회화 속에 자주 등장하는 숫자 중, 건물의 번지수와 호텔,여관
등의 호실을 읽는 것은 필수 입니다. 그 읽는 방법을 다음에서 알아봅

위의 보기를 다시 이용해 보면, 먼저 1과 2처럼 3자리 숫자로 되어
있는 것은, 1) one twenty 2) three fifty-nine과 같이 백자리와 십자
리를 나누어 읽습니다. 4자리 숫자가 되면 3) twenty-eight, ninety-
eight로 읽는데, 4)처럼 십자리 숫자가 0인 경우에는 fifteen-on-six로
읽고, 5)처럼 십자리 이하가 모두 0일 경우에는 seventeen hundred로
읽습니다. 연도를 읽을 때도 역시 이 방법을 사용합니다. 또한 사람에
따라서는 숫자를 하나씩 읽기도 하는데, 1)을 one-two zero [oh]로 읽
는다든지, 3)을 two-eight-nine-eight로 읽는다는 뜻입니다. 6)의 경우
처럼 5자리 숫자의 경우에도 이것이 미국의 우편번호에 쓰인 것이라면,
four-seven-three-zero[oh]-nine처럼 숫자를 하나씩 읽습니다.
전화나 크레디트 카드의 번호가 03-123-4567일 경우, 그 읽는 방법은
다음과 같이 3가지가 쓰일 수 있습니다.

Jeroz To Buy Back Shares
Jeroz announced that its board of directors has authorized the buyback of $ 1 billion of its stock shares.
According to a statement by the company, the buyback operation will be carried out in stages, and will reduce the number of ahares available to the public by 7 percent.
After the announcement was made, prices for Jeroz shares rose to $ 31.50 a share, a gain of $ 5.75.
Last month, Jeroz posted losses totaling $ 1.093 billion for the fourth quarter, compared to earnings of $ 311 million for the same period one year ago.

이들은 각각 Queen's College와 Columbia University에서

< 작품배경 >
1960년 대에 많은 사람들의 인기를 한몸에 받고 있던 쿠바출신
권투선수 Benny Perat는 어느날 시합 도중 불의의 일격을 맞고
쓰러져 병원으로 후송되었으나 결국 죽고 말았다.

이 사건은 당시 인기절정의 스포츠였던 권투 경기의 위험성에
대해 일반인들의 인식을 새롭게 해주었을 뿐만 아니라 생활을
꾸려나가기 위해 여러가지 어려운 직업에 종사하며 힘든 삶을
영위하고 있는 New York을 비롯한 대도시 빈민계층의 처절한
삶의 한 단면을 보여주는 것이기도 했다.
