Manufacturers of baseball bats may be forced to lay off

baseball bats is making a quantum leap in response to the
surge in the price of the hardwood ash trees used to make
baseball bats. The problem arose because of the deforestation
of mountains where ash trees normally grow. Right now a
baseball bat made from ash wood costs about $100, but the
price is expected to double in the next six months and
quadruple within two years. Bat dealers and manufacturers are
