Many people might think that they choose friends on the basis of personal characteristics such as intelligence, personality, interest, or even physical appearance.
But a study of a housing complex for married students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology suggests that physical distance can be a decisive factor.
Researchers asked couples to list their friends in the complex.
They found that residents were far more likely to list the couple in the next apartment than the one that lived two doors away.
