amicable은 처리·협의·해결 따위에 대해서 쓰이며, 「우호적인, 호의의, 화목한」을 의미한다. an amicable settlement는 보통 겉으로 나타나는 a peaceful settlement를 의미할 뿐, 당사자들이 반드시 서로 다정하게(amiably) 대하는 것은 아니다.

라는 뜻도 되기 때문이다. 그리고 '짜다' 즉 '구두쇠'라는 뜻도 있다.

말이 된다. '구두쇠'란 말에는 stingy person, miser, tightwad,

구두쇠의 반대말, 돈을 물 쓰듯 하는 사람은 spendthrift라 하고
씀씀이가 큰 사람 즉 통이 큰 사람은 big spender라 한다.
on the cheap은 '싸게' 즉 '경제적으로'란 뜻이 된다.
ex) This book will tell you how to vacation on the cheap.
'이 책은 경제적으로 휴가를 보내는 방법을 알려 준다.' 는 말이된다.
cheap 자체가 '싸게'란 부사로 쓰이기도 한다.
ex) I had to sell my house cheap to avoid foreclosure.
'집이 은행에 넘어가는 것을 막기 위해 나는 집을 싸게 팔 수밖에 없었다.'
Serve (a person) right! 까불더니 잘됐다!
* 문법적으로 정확하게는 It serves him right.라고 해야
하지만 일상 회화에서는 it이라는 주어를 생략하고
또 3인칭 단수를 표시하는 's'자도 serve에 붙이지 않고
그냥 Serve him right라고 한다.
