gesticulation 몸짓하기 (motion; gesture)
Operatic performers are trained to make exaggerated gesticulation because of
the large auditoriums in which they appear.

They said the performers are having the dress rehearsal.

Here's one performer who's not afraid to take risks.
In her first Hollywood movie the native from Chengdu had no qualms with being an eyeball-collecting villain in the 1994 movie The Crow.

The aging actor, trying to play the part of a young man, seemed no more than a parody of the great performer whom my parents had admired so much.

The taste of the public is so fickle that a TV performer who is a big hit one season may be out of a job the next.

In those days, many women were trying to work as pilots.
But they faced a lot of competition from all of the male pilots who were looking for work.
And it was still socially unacceptable for women to fly planes.
Many of these women decided that the only way they could become working pilots was by starting their own businesses.
They went into barnstorming, often as performers first, and then working pilots later.
It was a hard life and a dangerous one.
But some of them were successful.

Learning a language is not a matter of acquiring a set of rules and building up a large vocabulary.
The teacher’s roles should not be directed at informing his students about a language, but at enabling them to use it.
The drills and exercises a student does have one end in sight: to enable him to become a skilled performer.
The student’s command of a language will therefore be judged not by how much he knows but by how well he can perform in public.

As a performer of Chopin, Arthur Rubinstein was rivaled in the second half of

Popular music is a business as well as an art. It is a business which
thrives on change and novelty. A group arrives; it is tremendously
popular for a while; the group's records sell in the millions.
It would seem that all that is necessary is to keep on repeating the
same success by singing the same songs and making the same record
over and over again. But it doesn't really work that way.
Both as artists and as popular entertainers, the performers have to
develop and try new sounds and new tunes. When they stop developing,
they lose both their commercial and their artistic appeal.

Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those
rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and
costumes were almost always used. Furthermore, a suitable site had to be
provided for performances, and when the entire community did not
participate, a clear division was usually made between the "acting area"
and the "auditorium." In addition, there were performers, and, since
considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the
enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumed that task.

We will talk about 장고, today.
장고 is a drum that is shaped like an hourglass and is the chief
percussion instrument of Korea.
The name is derived from the words '장'and '고'or stick and drum.
It is roughly between 40 and 60 centimeters in length and about
20 to 30 centimeters in diameter.
It is carved from paulownia wood and this hourglass shaped instr-
ument is entirely hollow.
Teh two circular heads of the drum are covered with animal skin
and the heads are laced to each other with cords that zig zag
tween the two areas.
These cords can be manipulated by a leather strap to adjust the
head tension and it is the amount of tension which controls the
tone of the drum beat.
The drum heads are believed to have been originally made of hors-
eskin. The skin is stretched thin on the right thick on the left.
Today the right drum head is made of dog skin or sheep skin while
the left is made of cowhide.
장고is usually placed horizontally in front of the seated drummer
on the floor.
The left drum head is struck by the palm of the left hand while
the right side is struck with a bamboo stick.
The palm of a hand produces a deep soft and hollow sound while
the bamboo stick achieves a sharp stinging and hard sound.
This instrument is used to privide a stable rhythmic beat and
tempo for other instruments and performers.
