Ancient Greek art is frequently described as timeless, partly
because of its mathematically precise, classic proportions.

→ 그 이상으로: what is more; much more than that
→ 성숙한: mature; fully developed; grown-up
(ANS 1) Of course that is partly because we are physically grown up, but perhaps another bigger reason is that we now have a mature eye of adults.
(ANS 2) We can attribute these experiences to the fact that we are grown up in body and more specifically, that we've come to have mature inner eyes.

→ 눈이 어둠에 익숙해진 탓일까: since my eyes seemed to have grown accustomed to the darkness → 별빛 아래로: in the starlight
→ 희미하게 보였다: was faintly discerned; was dimly recognized
(ANS 1) But while I was looking toward the sea, my eyes seemed to have become accustomed to the darkness, and I dimly discerned the dumpy figure of the island in the faint starlight.
(ANS 2) But it was partly because my eyes had grown accustomed to the darkness after looking toward the sea that the stumpy figure of the island was faintly recognized in the dim glow of the stars.

^^Of course, police are partly to blame for these attacks. If they had
been more careful and ready no such attacks would have happened.
However the major cause of the failure is the absolute shortage of

Although it is based on a real event, this dramatic film is really a mixture of a Hollywood love story and a disaster movie.
At the time of its production it was the most expensive film ever made, in spite of not having well-known stars.
This was partly because of the amazing special effects,
but also because of numerous problems while it was being filmed, which resulted in several months delay.
Although the end of this film is no surprise, it is still incredibly moving.
It was nominated for 14 Oscars, including best film, best director and best actress.

Light travels at different speeds depending on the material it is traveling through.
For example, light travels more slowly through glass and water than through air.
Have you ever looked at your leg in a bathtub full of water and noticed that it appeared crooked?
The illusion is created because the light is slowed down when it hits the water,
and takes a slightly different direction again when it leaves the water and returns to the air.
You can see the same effect if you look at a pencil partly immersed in a glass of water.

Earlier centuries showed that mobility was important in warfare.
For example, the Japanese yielded to the Americans upon seeing their steam-driven warships.
The Russians lost the Crimean War partly because they lacked the railroads to move men and equipment to the front.
In World War I, trucks transported troops and materials fast, and diesel-powered ships carried equipment swiftly over the seas.
Attacks against these forms of transportation, therefore, became important.
For example, the Arabs cut the railroad in Arabia and defeated the Ottoman Turks.

Americans today have different eating habits because their lifestyles have changed.
American lifestyles now include growing numbers of people who live alone, single parents and children, and double-income families.
These changing lifestyles are responsible for the increasing number of people who must rush meals or sometimes skip them altogether.
Many Americans have less time than ever before to spend preparing food.
Partly as a consequence of this limited time, 60% of all American homes now have microwave ovens.
They also eat out four times a week on the average.
The way people live determines the way they eat.

However, because of the differences between identical twins brought up together and those brought up apart, these characteristics may be partly determined by environment.

Most of us like the conversational parts of a story better than the others.
This is partly mental laziness, but is also due to the fact that
conversation shows character more quickly than anything else.
Study a few conversational pages in any standard novel known to you, and
note how readily you can build up a mental picture of the speakers from
what they say and the way in which they say it.
Careful study of conversation of this kind is also helpful in forming
habits of pleasant, straightforward talk―a very rare accomplishment.

Recently new building codes came into effect in our city. All new houses
must now be built with proper building materials so that heat will not
escape unnecessarily during the winter. The laws have had a definite
effect. There has been a fifty percent saving in the amount of natural
gas and electricity used. The city is doing other things to save energy.
Buses, partly supported by the city, transport many people throughout the
area. Many new bicycle paths were made, and today there are twice as many
bicycles as cars in the city.

Global civil society is in one sense a separate social system growing up around international society and giving rise to regimes of its own.
Even so, its emergence has far-reaching implications for the dynamics of international society because it provides a social base for nonstate actors that helps them to participate effectively in the creation and operation of international regimes, which in turn influence the character of international society.
The emergence of a global civil society is partly a simple matter of material resources.
The introduction of the fax machine and the dramatic growth of the World Wide Web, largely as a function of global civil society rather than international society, has allowed nonstate actors to forge effective global alliances that are not subject to national governmental control.

Most of the state lies on a peninsula, bounded by the Arctic Ocean to
the north, the Bering Sea to the west, and the Pacific Ocean on the
southwest, south, and southeast. This peninsula, stretching away from
the rest of North America, forms the northwest corner of the continent.
One of the world's largest peninsulas, it is partly shared with Canada
on the east.

After the peak year of 1957, the birth rate in Canada began to decline.
It continued falling until in 1966 it stood at the lowest level in 25
years. Partly this decline reflected the low level of births during the
depression and the war, but it was also caused by changes in Canadian
society. Young people were staying at school longer; more woman were
working; young married couples were buying automobiles or houses before
starting families; rising living standards were cutting down the size of
families. It appeared that Canada was once more falling in step with the
trend toward smaller families that had occurred all through the Western
world since the time of the Industrial Revolution.

What of the Southern leaders, all of whom were liable to charges of
treason? One of these leaders, Jefferson Davis, president of the
Southern Confederacy, was the subject of an insulting popular Northern
song, "Hang Jeff Davis from a Sour Apple Tree," and even children sang
it. Davis was temporarily chained in his prison cell during the early
days of his two-year imprisonment. But he and the other Southern leaders
were finally released, partly because it was unlikely that a jury from
Virginia, a Southern Confederate state, would convict them. All the
leaders were finally pardoned by President Johnson in 1868 in an effort
to help reconstruction efforts proceed with as little bitterness as
possible.

Learning is connected to instruction and direction, and boys get more of
that than girls do all through school. Why? Partly because teachers tend
to ques- tion the students who they expect will have the answer. Since
girls traditionally
don't do so well as boys in such “masculine” subjects as math and
science, they're called on least in those classes. But girls are called
on most in verbal and reading classes, where boys are expected to have
the trouble. The trouble is in our culture, not in our chromosome. In
Germany, everything academic is considered masculine, most teachers are
men, and girls have the reading problems.

Its principal function is that of providing safety from predators, partly
because the flock can rely on many pairs of eyes to watch for enemies, and
partly because if one bird reacts to danger, the whole flock is warned.

(1) 그 이상으로: what is more; much more than that
(2) 성숙한: mature; fully developed; grown-up
신체적인 눈이 아니라 'the power of seeing [or knowing the

[John's Diary]

When will the weatherman say something reliable? Maybe, not
in this millennium. Partly cloudy with occasional rain? Then
what'd you call that pouring rain out the window? Raining
adds to the traffic congestion; but I had to drive anyway to
score some brownie points with Jill. After making sure the
gas was turned off and all the windows were locked, I went
out the porch door, locked it, and went down to the basement
parking lot. There are so many cars in the lot these days
that it's tough to find a parking space. Some thoughtless
bastards park their cars however they like, without any
consideration for others. Some scumbags even take up two
parking spaces or double park.
2. Something reliable:
Nothing
special 처럼요.
Not in this millenuim은,
4. Partly cloudy and occasional rain:
5. What do you call… :
Did you say you have no money on you? Then what do you call
this in your pocket? A roll of paper?
I'll pour you another cup of tea. Just relax.
Thousands of people poured out of the burning theater.
The rain has been pouring down for days!
7. Add to the traffic congestion:
You explanation only adds to my confusion!
9. Score brownie points with someone:
Brownie
John wouldn't rat on his friends just to earn some brownie
points with his teacher!
10. Make sure:
Make sure he's dead.
12. Basement parking lot: 지하 주차장. 주차 공간은 parking
space라고 합니다.
13. In the lot: lot
14. So many cars that - : 문법 배울 때 많이 봤던 so - that
I was so angry that I couldn't sleep.
16. However they like: 우리 말에서도 "지 맘대로 - 한다라고
You can't do everything the way you like.
John always wants to have his way.
17. Scumbags: scum
18. Take up something: take up은 차지해 버리다라는 뜻입니다.
You just can't take up two lanes!
19. Double park:
Double parking

Of course, even if you were told to sign in the circle here, here and here, you are partly responsible because as an investor you should have read it all, but I guess you just gave your trust because it was a bank.

If the rise in the sales slows down, the landlord will raise the security deposit to use it as the investment because the profit will decrease or return part of the security deposit to monthly rent to preserve the profit as partly-jeonse.

An international financial expert at a public policy research institute, who asked not to be named, said, "It is partly due to the large impact of the U.S.-China trade dispute as a small open country, but the current administration's critical view of the sluggish economic and foreign policy as well as the real economy has raised doubts among foreign investors."

Companies are flocking to the private equity bond market partly because institutional investors do not open their wallets unless they are a handful of blue-chip companies despite the government's active policy support.

William Hambrecht, one of the founders of investment bank Hambrecht &
Quist, last year began his own firm that aims at giving investors a
chance to bid on IPOs in an auction format.
Wit Capital, a
2-year-old company partly owned by Goldman Sachs, which also underwrites
some deals, is offering select investors a chance to buy stock at the
IPO price. E-Offering, an investment banking subsidiary of E*Trade Group
Inc., offers a similar product.

Even Schwab has allied with securities underwriters and has participated
in scores of IPOs this year; yet its customers have received a paltry
amount of the total shares sold, about 2.5 percent, according to one
estimate.

It was pretty the same story throughout Comdex, which with 200,000-plus
conference-goers is North America's largest and most prestigious trade
show. Attendees said there was talk about Microsoft's legal headache,
but the buzz around Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson's ruling was mostly
drowned out by the latest trends in technological development.
That's partly because Jackson's ``findings of fact'' were handed down
more than a week ago, giving people plenty of time to digest them. But
it's also because he has yet to determine whether Microsoft violated
antitrust law and, if so, what remedies he should order.

He said Monday in a telephone interview from his home in Shoreline,
Wash., that he refused to identify his two partners to the Secret
Service, partly because he believes the criminal penalties for hackers
are too steep. His punishment didn't fit his crime, he insisted.
``I'd rather not have what happened to me happen to anyone else,'' Burns
said. ``I don't really agree with the kind of sentencing range there is
for the crime.''
