The early history of the human race is most clearly and readily studied by
observing the stages of human technological progress. That is why it was a
longstanding convention to divide early history into broad periods according to
the hard materials-stone, copper, bronze, and iron, in that order-from which
cutting tools and weapons were made. Then, as knowledge of the past increased,
the broad periods were further subdivided. The Stone age was divided into the
Old (Paleolithic) period and the New (Neolithic) period when it was noticed that
the technique of sharpening flint and other stones changed from flaking to
grinding.
인류의 초기역사는 인간의 기술상의 진보단계를 관찰함으로써 가장 분명하게 그리고
쉽게 연구된다. 바로 이런 이유로 오랫동안 관습적으로 초기역사를 자르는 도구와
무기를 만든 단단한 재료-돌, 구리, 청동, 그리고 철, 이런 순으로-에 따라서
