Mutiny Aboard Fishing Vessel : ¿ø¾ç¾î¼± ¼±»ó¹Ý¶õ
We are stunned by the shocking mutiny aboard a tuna fishing
boat with a crew of 24 in the South Pacific that has left seven Koreans
and four men from other countries dead. The mishap took place aboard
the 294-ton Honduras-registered Pescamar 15 that was owned by an
Omani firm and operated by Daehyon Fisheries Co. of South Korea. The
victims reportedly were the Korean captain, six other Koreans, three
Indonesians and one Chinese.

The frequent violent crime on Korean fishing boats on the high seas

killed aboard a tuna fishing vessel allegedly by six ethnic
Korean-Chinese, in a mutiny in the South Pacific.

so the trip around the world had to be broken up into small pieces.
The first section was from New York to Bermuda.
From there, I went to Venezuela, then to the Galapagos Islands and Tahiti.
I wandered all through the South Pacific, stopping for long visits in Fiji.
Occasionally, I would be joined by friends.
But most of the time, my only companions were dolphins and flying fish.
Sometimes a bird would stop by to hitchhike or for a little rest.

The people of Kiribati are afraid that one day in the not-too-distant future, their country will disappear from the face of the earth.
Several times this year, the Pacific island nation has been flooded by a sudden high tide.
These tides, which swept across the island and destroyed houses, came when there was neither wind nor rain.
What is causing these mysterious high tides?
The answer may well be global warming.
When fuels like oil and coal are being burned, pollutants are released;
these pollutants trap heat in the earth¡¯s atmosphere.
Warmer temperatures cause water to expand and also create more water by melting glaciers and polar ice caps.

In the Solomon Islands in the south pacific, some villagers practice a unique form of logging.
If a tree is too large to cut down with an ax, the natives cut it down by yelling at it.
Woodsmen with special powers creep up on a tree just at dawn and suddenly scream at it at the top of their lungs.
They continue this for thirty days.
The tree dies and falls over.
The theory is that the shouting kills the spirit of the tree.
According to the villagers, it always works.

Back in New York City by 1910, Laurent began carving pieces such as The
Priestess, which reveals his fascination with African, pre-Columbian,
and South Pacific art. Taking a walnut plank, the sculptor carved the
expressive, stylized design. It is one of the earliest examples of
direct carving in American sculpture. The plank's form dictated the
rigidly frontal view and the low relief. Even its irregular shape must
have appealed to Laurent as a break with a long-standing tradition that
required a sculptor to work within a perfect rectangle or square.

Current understanding of the interaction between different plates
explains why these occur where they do. For example, the edge of the
Pacific Ocean has been called the "Ring of Fire" because so many
volcanic eruptions and earthquakes happen there. Before the 1960's,
geologists could not explain why active volcanoes and strong earthquakes
were concentrated in that region. The theory of plate tectonics gave
them an answer.

Most of the state lies on a peninsula, bounded by the Arctic Ocean to
the north, the Bering Sea to the west, and the Pacific Ocean on the
southwest, south, and southeast. This peninsula, stretching away from
the rest of North America, forms the northwest corner of the continent.
One of the world's largest peninsulas, it is partly shared with Canada
on the east.

The prevailing winds in the Great Basin are from the west. Warm, moist
air from the Pacific Ocean is forced upward as it crosses the Sierra
Nevada. At the higher altitudes it cools and the moisture it carries is
precipitated as rain or snow on the western slopes of the mountains.
That which reaches the Basin is air wrung dry of moisture.

Before he came up with this innovations in 1916, clerks fetched items
upon the request of patrons. This is not to say that grocery store
chains were new. The first well-known chain was the Great Atlantic and
Pacific Tea Company founded in 1859. More familiar with as A £¦ P, the
chain had 2,000 stores all over America by the outbreak of World War ¥°.
But A £¦ P shoppers still did their buying the old-fashioned way ¡ªwith
the help of clerks. But when America entered the war in Europe in 1916,
clerks were in short supply. Almost out of necessity, Saunders thought
up this new way of shopping which he actually patented under the name
Self- Serving Store. He opened his first store in Memphis which he
called Piggly Wiggly. He chose the odd name for his store because it
invariably attracted attention.
