formal party에 초청받았을 때
* '불청객'은 uninvited guest라 하고 gate-crasher라고도
하는데 gate를 부수는 사람(crasher)이란 뜻이다.
초청장이 없어 문에서 정지를 당하자 문을 부수고
들어가는 사람이란 표현이다.
formal party란 검은색 tuxedo 즉, black tie (bow tie-나비넥타이)를
맨 정장 차림(여성들은 이브닝 드레스)으로 가야 하는 파티를 말한다.
그 반대는 informal party인데 come-as-you-are party라고도 한다.
이런 파티에는 입고 있는 그대로 입고 가도 좋다.
prom은 promenade(프라미나아드)의 준말로서 고등학교 졸업반
학생들의 formal dance party를 가리킨다. formal party이므로
물론 tuxedo와 tie차림으로 가야한다.
그리고 초청장의 아랫부분에는 대게 R.S.V.P라고 적혀 있는데
이것은 Please reply란 뜻의 프랑스 말의 약자로서 파티 참석여부를
미리 전화로 알려 달라는 뜻이다. R.S.V.P밑에 괄호를 치고
Regrets only라고 쓰기도 하는데 이것은 참석 못해서 유감인 사람만
전화해 달라는 뜻이다.
Put down의 여러 가지 뜻.
* 새로 집이나 차를 산 사람을 보고 우리는 '현금은 얼마나 냈느냐?'고
흔히 묻곤 한다. 이 때 How much did you put down? 라고 하면 된다.
여기서 put down은 '얼마를 down payment로 지불한다.'는 뜻이다.
put down은 원래 글자 그대로 무엇을 '내려놓다'는 뜻이다.
가구점에서 산 의자를 배달해 온 배달원에게 put it down here. 라고
하면 '그거 여기 내려 놓으세요'란 말이다. 그러나 동양인이라고
깔보는 백인에게 Don't put me down because I'm an Oriental.이라고
하면 '내가 동양인이라고 깔보지 말라'는 말이 된다.
그러니까 put down은 '깔보다'는 뜻으로 쓰인다.
look down on도 같은 뜻으로 쓰인다. 또 put down은 장부에
'기록하다'는 뜻도 된다.

Not being able to fall asleep after going to bed at night or waking up too early in the morning is usually called insomnia.
In teenagers, insomnia is so frequent that it is almost "normal."
For some reason, teens fall asleep later than they did as children.
For example, if a child was used to going to bed at 8 p.m., a teen probably is not ready for sleep until 11 p.m.

Meanwhile, the following advice will help keep rugs in good shape:
* Vacuum the underside of your rugs at least twice a year. Dirt migrates to the bottom of the knots.
* Rotate the rugs if possible. Rugs kept in one position attract insects and could fade in one spot from the sun.
* If you have a rug with chemical dyes, it probably will fade. Use window treatments and screens or shades to keep out the sun's rays.
* Do not moth proof. It can be problematic for the dyes. Good housekeeping is better.
* Take care of damage early. Damage to edges and fringes can be easily repaired if caught early. If worn areas are allowed to expand, repair can be costly.
