→ 전면적인 행정감사: an all-out administrative inspection; a nationwide investigation
→ 뿌리뽑다: root out
(ANS) The dietary pattern in our country has largely changed nowadays with the advent of an era of instant food. Many of traditional dishes have been replaced by instant food items that are readily available in groceries. In industrial societies, such a phenomenon is inevitable, since fast food makes it possible for busy hardworking people to save time and energy.
But in the wake of such a drastic change, some immoral food producers have been producing unwholesome food items potentially harmful to the health of consumers, taking advantage of the mass consumption of instant food. Under these circumstances it is more than appropriate that the public health authorities should have conducted an all-out inspection to root out substandard food.

Many people went outside around August 27 this year to observe the close encounter between Earth and Mars.
On August 27, when Mars was closer to Earth than ever in human history,
the one-way travel time of light was just 3 minutes and 6 seconds.
Thus, if you had turned a light toward Mars that day, it would have reached Mars in 186 seconds.
Mars was so bright that even the lights of the city didn't get in the way.
If you missed this astronomical show, you're really out of luck.
Mars will not be this close again until the year 2287.

If you recognize your friend Jack feels depressed, what should you do?
First talk to him about it.
Try to discover what he is feeling.
If you can't persuade him to discuss the problem,
try an approach like "you remind me of the time when I was depressed."
This may keep him from feeling lonely.
Then, provide emotional support.
Please don't forget to listen sympathetically, point out the realities of the situations and always offer hope.

Before our two teens went out with friends for the evening, my husband and I would negotiate a reasonable curfew for their return.
Instead of waiting up for them past our own bedtime, we would set our alarm to ring at their curfew time.
If they were late and the alarm woke us up, we would know that they missed their curfew.
We always encouraged them to call us if they were going to be late.
We preferred waking up to their voice on the phone rather than being startled by the alarm going off and not knowing where they were.

Bill did not inform the neighbor of the damage, but he did tell my husband.
This did not seem fair to me.
So, several weeks after the neighbor returned home,

However, our agreement was broken and when they contacted Bill, somehow my name was in the mix.

Susie remembers the day when she was on the stage as a professional singer for the first time.
It was long after she had been discovered at a singing contest.
Despite her late debut, Susie is now popular among many Asians.
Thanks to the success of her debut album, My love, released two years ago, and recent television roles in Japan, she no longer feels unsure of her abilities.
She says, “I would give myself only 20 points for singing when I first started out. Now, after practicing in the recording studio every day, I give myself 90 points.”

All of the wild Giant Pandas in the world live in western China.
They are found in dense bamboo forests high up in the mountains.
The forests are so dense that it has always been hard for people to find out much about wild pandas.
The pandas stay hidden in the forest most of the time, where people can't even see them.
In many ways, the Giant Panda is still a mysterious animal.
Nobody is really sure what kind of animal they are.
Some scientists say that the Giant Panda is a member of the raccoon family.
But others claim that it belongs to the bear family.
And a third group is sure that it doesn't belong to either family.

The last time I went out for breakfast, I had to choose among ten types of pancakes, six varieties of juice, and four kinds of potatoes.
To my surprise, my wife and children love all this.
They love going into an ice cream shop and being able to choose among seventy-five flavors of ice cream and seventy-five flavors of topping to put on them.
For my part, I increasingly find that I miss simplicity.
Faced with a glass case filled with eighteen types of coffee, I just wish for a nice cup of tea.
I'm afraid I am the only person in the house who feels that way.

Although restrictions against opening adoption files make the search much harder,
they do not necessarily discourage those adoptees who want to discover who their biological parents are.
Those men and women who are desperate to find what they want to know will, if they can afford it, hire a detective to find out.
If not, some of them are willing to devote all their time and energy to finding more about their origins.

Alice got up late this morning and hurriedly went out of her apartment.
Realizing that the elevator was not working, she walked down 10 floors.
When she reached her car, it occurred to her that she might have forgotten to turn off the gas range.
With a sigh, she climbed breathlessly up the stairs, only to find that the range had been turned off.
It goes without saying that she was blamed by her boss for not being on time.

My hometown is famous for its scenic beauty and its flowers.
The lilac fair is especially well known.
In the spring, when the lilacs are at their most beautiful, many people come from all over the country to visit the town and see the fair.
It is wonderful to see families walking together among the lilacs, parents carrying small children on their shoulders, while others run and play around them.
Meanwhile, teenagers dance to the rhythm of the music on their cassette players, and old people sit on park benches, eating their packed meals.
They all feel lucky to be alive and healthy at this time.
It is difficult for them to imagine a better day out.

Yesterday I ate lunch at your restaurant, which you advertised as “a dining paradise.”
It was so completely packed with people that the line snaked out the door, and by the time I reached the counter, I was exhausted.
I decided on the hamburger steak special and side dishes, but there was no potato salad left and the beans were burnt more than baked.
At the table, the truck driver sitting across from me wouldn't stop talking about highway taxes.
Finally, when I rose to leave, the waiter “kindly” yelled at me to clean up after myself.
Throwing away that plate of food was the most enjoyable part of dining at your restaurant.

All the forms of popular culture have one thing in common―the message that to be fashionable we must buy things.
Every time something goes out of fashion and something new comes in, it is time to get out the credit card and check book.
When we choose clothes, music, and entertainment, we think we are expressing our individuality.
In reality, we are following the fashions which are forced upon us by the small group of people who control the media and manufacturing companies.
So, being fashionable means spending money.

A small piece of wood from a campfire flies onto some dry grass and goes unnoticed.
Within the first few minutes this small fire may still be controllable, but in no time at all it's grown beyond the capability of the campers to put it out.
It could take hundreds of fire fighters many days to extinguish this fire.
This is exactly true of solving our everyday problems.
What happens to a little problem that doesn't get resolved when it's little?
It gets bigger and bigger until it becomes a real problem that's going to require a lot of time, energy, and resources to be solved.

What would my life be like if my children didn't play sports? Well, it may be more relaxed on one hand.
However, like other parents, I can see the immense benefits sports provide our children!
Organized sports offer children of all ages the chance to exercise, to be part of a team, and to form relationships they may not otherwise have.
Working out not only helps to lessen depression, it also helps teenagers overcome the uneasiness they may feel at times as they develop and change.
And being on a sports team can be helpful and stabilizing at a time when so many things in their lives seem devastating.
And sharing in both its accomplishments and failures is a wonderful experience.

I have a special rule for travel: Never carry a map.
I prefer to ask for directions, and I can find out about different “style” of directions every time I ask, “How can I get to the post office?”
Here are some illustrations of those differences.

Employers should consider how to limit passive smoking at work.
There are various methods of preventing or limiting exposure to smoke.
Every workplace is different, and there is no universal solution.
Full discussion with employees is highly desirable for the smooth implementation of policies designed to limit exposure to tobacco smoke.
A policy is very much more likely to be accepted by all employees if they feel they have been properly consulted.
It is important to take time and make sure that details of restrictions on smoking are worked out and agreed on between management and employees.

While we're traveling, we normally spend only a second looking at everyday objects.
The day races past us without our really being aware of it.
The average time we spend looking at things has been steadily decreasing during the last fifty years.
We say that the world is going faster, but that might be because we are perceiving it faster.
Just try looking at objects for at least five seconds.
You can do this when you're walking or looking out of the car.
You'll find that five seconds is a long time.
This slight increase in the time we take to observe things can increase our passion for life and the quality of life.

The process of culture shock is so predictable that its stages have been systematized.
The first is the honeymoon stage, familiar to those of us who love to travel, but never stay in one place long enough to find out what follows.
In the honeymoon stage, the new country and its people seem delightful.
It almost feels more comfortable than home.
Everything is so different and charming, the people are so nice and the customs are so interesting.
Then the bloom comes off the rose.
People start to look shallow, selfish, and stupid.
The different ways of doing things do not seem interesting any more―just boring.
You start to feel exhausted all the time.
Culture shock has set in.

It was a very hot day in the middle of summer, and there were no trees along the street.
Mr. Read closed his shop at half past five, and went out into the street and began walking to the bus stop.
He was very fat.
The sun shone straight down the street, and in a few minutes Mr. Read felt very hot.
A little girl came out of another shop.
The girl stayed very near him all the time, and she kicked Mr. Read's shoes several times.
Mr. Read looked at her angrily each time.
After the fourth time, Mr. Read stopped, turned round and said to the little girl,
“What are you doing? Stop following me like that!”
“I'm sorry, but don't stop me, please!” the little girl said.
“It's very hot today, and there isn't any shade anywhere else in the street!”

Dear Sally,
I'm so excited to hear that you're finally going to visit me here in Seoul.
I've really missed you since I moved away from Australia and I've been waiting for you to come for so long.
I've made an arrangement to take off a couple of weeks from work, so I'll be able to spend a lot of time with you.
Please let me know what you want to do here and I'll prepare everything for it.
You should check out the highlights of Korea online.
If you want to go somewhere outside of Seoul, just let me know and I'll be happy to rent a car.
I hope that I'll be able to do many things with you.
I can't wait to see you.
Bye for now,
Suzanne
Sally
Suzanne

Quality time is time that is well spent.
This term has became more and more frequently used in recent years.
Our busy lives have given us an opportunity to learn that the amount of time we spend is often less important than the way we spend it.
In other words, the quality of the time is more important than the quantity.
People concerned with the quality of the time are also more likely to choose rewarding activities;
they have no reason to kill time.
Those who have not discovered the concept of quality time might miss out on something that makes life worth living.

The rich and unhappy are likely to prize possessions such as a fancy car or an expensive necklace.
Unfortunately, they don't see objects as a link to other people but as something to stand out from others.
For example, Doris Duke was the only child of a multi-millionaire.
By the time she reached adulthood, she could fulfill any desire
― from the B-25 bomber she remodeled for luxury travel, to her ceiling-high goldfish tanks.
Yet when she died three years ago, news reports detailed a lonely life of deep unhappiness.

It was a Friday afternoon, and the last bell had just rung, which meant it was time to go home for the weekend.
Everyone was excited and hurried out of school shouting goodbye and making weekend plans.
Everyone except Sharon.
Sharon envied the other boys and girls because she wished she could be just like them.
The school was almost empty of students by the time she was ready to leave.
She wasn't in any hurry to go home because she knew what to expect when she got there.
She slowly picked up her stuff and trudged home.
Sharon

I thought I'd die.
That was the funniest thing I'd heard in a long time.
Seth was in hysterics, and so was the class.
I sent him out, and a couple of minutes later, we all saw him and his father leaving the building.
They both looked in and waved, and everybody was laughing.

Americans today have different eating habits because their lifestyles have changed.
American lifestyles now include growing numbers of people who live alone, single parents and children, and double-income families.
These changing lifestyles are responsible for the increasing number of people who must rush meals or sometimes skip them altogether.
Many Americans have less time than ever before to spend preparing food.
Partly as a consequence of this limited time, 60% of all American homes now have microwave ovens.
They also eat out four times a week on the average.
The way people live determines the way they eat.

If you want to make good use of your time, you've got to know what's most important and then give it all you've got.
That's another lesson I learned at Lehigh.
I might have had five classes the next day, including an oral quiz where I didn't want to look stupid, so I had to prepare.
Anyone who wants to become a problem-solver in business has to learn fairly early how to establish priorities.
Of course, the time frame is a little different.
In college I had to figure out what I could accomplish in one evening.
In business the time frame is more like three months to three years.

"There are people who would say I'm not being honest with myself.
The traditional notion is that if you are by yourself you can't have a good time.
But that's really out of date.
It seems the longer I stay single, the less I'm inclined to give up that lifestyle."

I came out of real interest, just not to have a good time!

I suppose it was worth all the aggravation you caused, not to mention the potential for accidents.

For those who need to have things spelled out for them, here it is.

She had just begun an intense, love-at-first-sight relationship, only to have her lover go off to Europe three weeks later.
For seven tortured weeks she was plagued with doubts.
What if he decided he didn't love her after all?
What if he met someone else during his trip?
What if he didn't call her as soon as he returned?
Full of all these what-ifs, my friend's brain was about to short-circuit, until a wise friend of hers put things in perspective.
"Why worry? Whatever he does, he does.
Remember: You don't know until you know."
My friend stood there, awestruck by the brilliant simplicity of this observation.
There was really nothing she could do about the situation, after all.
And worrying about something before it actually happened suddenly came into focus as the waste of time and energy that it is.
In an instant, it seemed, she was free of the problem, able to settle back and take each day at a time until her lover returned, at which point things progressed just as beautifully as she could have hoped and her fears turned out to be groundless after all.

Our problem has been trying to depend on government to police the polluters.
Polluting has been against the law for a long time, but there will never be enough government regulation to prevent the illegal dumping of waste chemicals or the midnight venting of smokestacks.
This polluting of the biosphere won't completely stop until an alarmed citizenry pulls out their video recorders and takes it upon themselves to catch these people in the act.
In a sense, business and the employees of business must regulate themselves.

Once upon a time, the animals organized a school.
They adopted a curriculum consisting of running, climbing, swimming and flying.
All animals took all the subjects.
The duck was excellent in swimming, better in fact than his instructor, and made excellent grades in flying, but he was very poor in running.
Since he was low in running he had to stay after school and also drop swimming to practice running.
This was kept up until his feet were badly worn and he was only average in swimming.
But average was acceptable in school, so nobody worried about that except the duck.
The squirrel was excellent in climbing until he developed frustrations in the flying class where his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of from the tree-top down.
He also developed charley horses from over-exertion and he got poor grades in climbing and running.

The eagle was a problem child.
In climbing class he beat all the others to the top of the tree, but insisted on using his own way of getting there.
He had to be disciplined severely.
The rabbit started at the top of the class in running, but had a nervous breakdown because of so much time spent in making up for his poor performance in swimming and flying.
So he dropped out of school and started his own private school for running and hopping.

She thought, If you can't beat them, join them.
Mrs. Smith realized that since she could not talk her family out of attending the games, she might as well join them in one of their favorite pastimes.
By joining her family on the weekends she would alleviate her loneliness, and in time she might even come to like sports as much as her husband and children did.

We've had a pretty lean time these last few months, with my husband out of work.

A doctor was in the bathroom of a lunatic asylum watching his mad patients
bathe. Suddenly one of them cried, "It's time for the doctor to bathe." Then another
cried,"Let's drown him!" On his crying, all in the bathroom gathered around the
doctor, with their eyes fixed on him. They insisted on his being drowned.
Seeing his danger, the doctor thought out a trick."All right,my lads," he said.
"But suppose now you give the doctor a good cheer before you drown him."
This reasonable proposition being at once agreed to, a loud cheer resounded
through the building. This unusual noise, needless to say, at once brought the
keepers to the bathroom.

If you will ask some one who has at some time acted in a manner for which
he would be punished if it became known, you will find that when discovery
seemed imminent, the person in question repented of his crime. I do not
say that this would apply to the professional thief who expects a certain
amount of prison as a trade risk, but it applies to what may be called
the respectable offender, such as the bank manager who has embezzled in
a moment of stress, or the clergyman who has been tempted by passion into
some sexual irregularity. Such men can forget their crime when there seems
little chance of detection, but when they are found out or in grave danger
of being so, they wish they had been more virtuous, and this wish may give
them a lively sense of the enormity of their sin.

Standing in front of a boutique, I noticed an impatient-looking young man
approach a very attractive woman. "Would you mind talking to me for a few
minutes?" he asked her.
"Why?" she countered suspiciously.
"My wife has been in this shop for a long time," the man explained.
"But I know she'll come right out if she sees me talking to you."
His wife joined him almost immediately.

The weather is like the government, always in the wrong.
In summer time we say it is stifling; in winter that it is killing;
in spring and autumn we find fault with it for being neither one thing
nor the other, and wish it would make up its mind.
If it is fine, we say the country is being ruined for want of rain;
if it does rain, we pray for fine weather.
If December passes without snow, we indignantly demand to know what
has become of our good old-fashioned winters, and talk as if we had
been cheated out of something we had bought and paid for; and when
it does snow, our language is a disgrace to a Christian nation.
We shall never be content until each man makes his own weather,
and keeps it to himself.

So great is our passion for doing things for ourselves, that we are
becoming increasingly less dependent on specialized labor.
No one can plead ignorance of a subject any longer, for there are
countless do-it-yourself publications.
Armed with the right tools and materials, newly-weds gaily embark
on the task of decorating their own homes.
Men of all ages spend hours of their leisure time installing their own
fireplaces, laying out their own gardens; building garages and making
furniture.
Some really keen enthusiasts go so far as to build their own record
players and radio transmitters. Shops cater to the do-it-yourself
craze not only by running special advisory services for novices,
but by offering consumers bits and pieces which they can assemble
at home.
Such things provide an excellent outlet to pent-up creative energy, but
unfortunately not all of us are born handymen.

All great books contain boring portions, and all great lives have
contained uninteresting stretches. Imagine a modern publisher confronted
with the Old Testament as a new manuscript submitted to him for the
first time. It is not difficult to think what his comments would be,
for example, on the genealogists.
"Mr. dear sir," he would say, "this chapter lacks pep; you can't expect
your reader to be interested in a mere string of proper names of persons
about whom you tell him so little. You have begun your story, I will
admit, in fine style, and at first I was very favorably impressed, but
you have altogether too much wish to tell it all. Pick out the high
lights, take out the superfluous matter, and bring me back your
manuscript when you have reduced it to a reasonable length."

When my child was six months old, I re-entered the work force. I was anxious
about how I would juggle the morning chores―feeding and dressing the baby
and myself, packing a lunch and the baby's bag, dropping her off at day
care and still getting myself to work on time.
One frantic morning, I strapped the baby in the car seat and pulled out
of the driveway ten minutes ahead of schedule. "Mommy is so efficient,"
I happily told her. My smugness disappeared a few blocks later when I
looked down and realized I was still in my bathrobe.

I have seen a boy two years old, who had been kept in London, taken out
for the first time to walk in green country. The season was winter, and
everything was wet and muddy. To the adult eye there was nothing to
cause delight, but in the boy there sprang up a strange ecstasy; he
kneeled in the wet ground and put his face in the grass, and gave
utterance to half-articulate cries of delight. The joy that he was
experiencing was primitive, simple and massive.

When a resident of our town collapsed, he was revived by rescue breathing,
the new method of mouth-to-mouth artificial respiration.
He was taken to a hospital, where he collapsed again.
Semiconscious, he heard the doctor point out to the two nurses with him
that now was the time for them to learn rescue breathing technique.
At this, the patient raised a shaky finger and pointed to one of the
nurses little blonde.
"Teach her first!" he whispered.

We'll have to put off his presentation until tomorrow evening.

What about motion that is too slow to be seen by the human eye? That
problem has been solved by the use of the time-lapse camera. In this one,
the shutter is geared to take only one shot per second, or one per
minutes, or even per hour depending upon the kind of movement that is
being photographed. When the time-lapse film is projected at the normal
speed of twenty-four pictures per second, it is possible to see a bean
sprout growing up out of the ground. Time-lapse films are useful in the
study of many types of motion too slow to be observed by the unaided,
human eye.

Once upon a time there was an island called Lombok. On the island lived
a girl named Munira and her big brother Amin, the fisherman. "There
aren't any more fish around here, Munira," said Amin one day. "They've
all gone away, and I must follow them. Stay here, won't you? Promise me?"
"Of course," answered Munira. "I'll put a lamp in the window every night
for you to come home by." Amin didn't come back that night. Nor the next
night, nor the next. For years, Munira lived on the seashells she
gathered on the beach during the day. She waited by the window with her
lamp at night. The other people of Lombok moved away, one by one. Soon,
Munira was alone. One day Munira's cousin, Zeinab, came to visit her
from the big city. "Come to the city and live with me!" said Zeinab. "I
can't," said Munira. "I can't let the lamp go out." The next night there
was a terrible storm. In the morning, Munira walked along the beach
looking for seashells. Suddenly, she saw her lost brother Amin! He was

Some writers think that to impress their readers, they have to use a lot
of long words and try to sound "intellectual." This is not so. Most
readers prefer to read something that is clear, that they don't have to
struggle with. They want the writer to do the work. If they have to spend
time figuring out what the writer means, they will get impatient.
