upon the request of patrons. This is not to say that grocery store
chains were new. The first well-known chain was the Great Atlantic and
Pacific Tea Company founded in 1859. More familiar with as A ＆ P, the
chain had 2,000 stores all over America by the outbreak of World War Ⅰ.
But A ＆ P shoppers still did their buying the old-fashioned way ―with
the help of clerks. But when America entered the war in Europe in 1916,
clerks were in short supply. Almost out of necessity, Saunders thought
up this new way of shopping which he actually patented under the name
Self- Serving Store. He opened his first store in Memphis which he
called Piggly Wiggly. He chose the odd name for his store because it
invariably attracted attention.

replacing the paperwork in banking processes. With its use of computers to carry
out financial transactions, E.F.T. is changing the way people pay bills and may
eliminate the necessity for carrying cash. But there is a snag in this
technological revolution, and that is the reluctance of consumers to change
their habits. Regardless of whether or not consumers like it, bankers are
determined to fully implement the new system. The full use of E.F.T.
nevertheless may be a quarter century away.
