One day, I was cooking in the kitchen when the telephone rang.
I went to answer immediately.
She was my close friend, Lisa.
While we were talking on the phone, the fire alarm sounded.
I ran back to the kitchen.
The room was full of smoke and the beef was badly burnt.
I quickly turned off the gas, opened all the windows, and then went out of the house.
To my surprise, two fire engines were outside my house.
I was rather worried.
I told the firemen it was my careless cooking that caused tile heavy smoke.

Become aware of your breathing, noticing how the breath goes in and out, without trying to control it in any way.

I was working as a short-order cook at two restaurants in the same neighborhood.
On a Saturday night, I was finishing up the dinner shift at one restaurant and hurrying to report to work at the second place.
But I was delayed because one table kept sending back an order of hash browns, insisting they were too cold.
I replaced them several times, but still the customers were dissatisfied.
When I was able to leave, I raced out the door and arrived at my second job.
A server immediately handed me my first order.
“Make sure these hash browns are hot,” she said,
“because these people just left a restaurant down the street that kept serving them cold ones."

“Boys and girls, playtime is over, get back to work.”
Most of us learned early in life that work and play are separate, and that if you are playing you could not possibly be working.
But to have a livable work environment, a certain amount of playfulness or lightheartedness is required.
An innovative environment demands even more playfulness.
Assuming the matter-of-fact attitude may seem more efficient, but it constricts one's capacity to generate new solutions when needed.
The freedom to be playful expands creative opportunities.
The spirit that allows people to wear a peculiar tie or to laugh out loud without fearing what others think is the same spirit that encourages them to consider new ideas.

Imagine what it would be like to wake up and find yourself in a metal box.

We always leave a light when we go away at night.
It is so much nicer to come home to a lighted house than to a dark one.
It goes back, I suppose, to the years the boys were with us.
We never went to bed and turned out all the lights if one had not yet come in.
The light in the window was left as a greeting for the absent one.

My husband has a habit of turning off his alarm clock in the morning and going back to sleep for "just a few more minutes."

Two women seated directly across from me suddenly "fell" out of their seats, landed on the floor and started to moan.
One said, "I think my neck is broken. Call a doctor."
The other yelled, "I hurt my back. Get me an ambulance."
I was stunned.
The "falls" occurred fully two minutes after the bus had stopped.
The man sitting beside me whispered in my ear.
"Those women are looking to sue to transit company for injuries.
It's gotten to be quite a racket."

She had just begun an intense, love-at-first-sight relationship, only to have her lover go off to Europe three weeks later.
For seven tortured weeks she was plagued with doubts.
What if he decided he didn't love her after all?
What if he met someone else during his trip?
What if he didn't call her as soon as he returned?
Full of all these what-ifs, my friend's brain was about to short-circuit, until a wise friend of hers put things in perspective.
"Why worry? Whatever he does, he does.
Remember: You don't know until you know."
My friend stood there, awestruck by the brilliant simplicity of this observation.
There was really nothing she could do about the situation, after all.
And worrying about something before it actually happened suddenly came into focus as the waste of time and energy that it is.
In an instant, it seemed, she was free of the problem, able to settle back and take each day at a time until her lover returned, at which point things progressed just as beautifully as she could have hoped and her fears turned out to be groundless after all.

Eva was genuinely concerned about her friend and wanted to help her out.

How pleasant it must be to be able to look back on one's life and to realize that one "was always busy doing good and trying to do good, and advising and helping those in trouble"!
I confess, when I scan my past, I have to search very thoroughly before I can discover even one day on which I was "busy doing good and trying to do good."
I can remember several occasions on which I meant to "do good," but something, whether business or pleasure, usually intervened, and I seldom went farther in the matter.

The truth is, I am so out of practice in this business of "doing good" that I should be hard put to it to tell you what "doing good" is.

As we look back, we can indeed see the notion of individual rights
broadening out - to include more and more of the people, until it
came at length to be extended to them all.

The pet-shop customer couldn't believe his good fortune. The parrot he had
just bought could recite Shakespeare's sonnets, imitate opera stars and
intone Homer's epic poems in Greek. And he cost only $600.
Once the man got the bird home, however, not another word passed his beak.
After three weeks the disconsolate customer returned to the shop and asked
for his money back. "When we had this bird," said the proprietor, "he
could recite poetry and sing like an angel. Now you want me to take him
back when he's no longer himself? Well, all right. Out of the goodness

Just as the door shut behind him he heard the parrot say to the shop

All great books contain boring portions, and all great lives have
contained uninteresting stretches. Imagine a modern publisher confronted
with the Old Testament as a new manuscript submitted to him for the
first time. It is not difficult to think what his comments would be,
for example, on the genealogists.
"Mr. dear sir," he would say, "this chapter lacks pep; you can't expect
your reader to be interested in a mere string of proper names of persons
about whom you tell him so little. You have begun your story, I will
admit, in fine style, and at first I was very favorably impressed, but
you have altogether too much wish to tell it all. Pick out the high
lights, take out the superfluous matter, and bring me back your
manuscript when you have reduced it to a reasonable length."

Once upon a time there was an island called Lombok. On the island lived
a girl named Munira and her big brother Amin, the fisherman. "There
aren't any more fish around here, Munira," said Amin one day. "They've

"Of course," answered Munira. "I'll put a lamp in the window every night

night, nor the next. For years, Munira lived on the seashells she
gathered on the beach during the day. She waited by the window with her
lamp at night. The other people of Lombok moved away, one by one. Soon,
Munira was alone. One day Munira's cousin, Zeinab, came to visit her
from the big city. "Come to the city and live with me!" said Zeinab. "I
can't," said Munira. "I can't let the lamp go out." The next night there
was a terrible storm. In the morning, Munira walked along the beach
looking for seashells. Suddenly, she saw her lost brother Amin! He was

I saw a boy in the gym playing basketball. He dribbled the ball between
his legs, around his back, and took the ball to the basket. I really
wanted to do that. So I went out for the basketball team. I was

they are ten. People told me I couldn't make it, but I didn't care. I
practiced even on Sundays when my teammates were at home. I kept
practicing, and finally made it on a professional team. Playing
basketball also gave me a way to workout of my feelings.

I'm gonna be the man who is working hard for you
And when the money comes in for the work
I'll do I'll pass almost every penny onto you
When I come home, yeah, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home to you
I'm gonna be the man who is growing old with you
When I'm lonely, yes, I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who is lonely without you
When I'm dreaming, yes, I know
I'm gonna dream about the time when I'm with you

YOU NEEDED ME
Sung by Anne Murray
I cried a tear You wiped it dry.
I was confused You cleared my mind.
I sold my soul You bought it back for me
And held me up and gave me dignity
Somehow you needed me
You gave me strength to stand alone again
To face the world out on my own again.
You put me high up on a pedestal, So high that I could almost see
eternity.
You needed me You needed me.
And I can't believe it's you.
I can't belive it's ture.
I needed you and you were there.
And I'll never leave.
Why should I leave I'd be a fool.
'Cause I've finally found someone who really cares.
You held my hand when it was cold.
When I was lost you took me home.
You gave me hope when I was at the end.
And turned my lies back into truth again.
You even called me friend.
You gave me strength to stand alone again
to face the world out on my own again.
You put me high up on pedestal.
So high that I could almost see eternity.
You needed me You needed me.

SHE'S GONE
Steel Heart
She's gone - out of my life
I was wrong, I'm to blame
I was so untrue
I can't live without her love
In my life there's just an empty space
All my dreams are lost, I,m wasting away
Oh forgive me girl.
-
Chorus:
Lady won't you save me my heart belongs to you
Lady can you forgive me for all I've done to you
Lady Oh Lady
-
She's gone, out of my life
Oh she's gone
I find it so hard to go on
I really miss taht girl my love
-
Come back into my arms
I'm so alone, I'm begging you
I'm down on my knees
Oh forgive me girl

This used to be my playground
This used to be childhood dream
This used to be the place I ran to
Whenever I was in need of a friend
Why did it have to end
And why do they always say
-
Don't look back
Keep your head held high
Don't ask then why
Because life is short
And before you know you're feeling old
And your heart is breaking
Don't hold on to the past
Well that's too much to ask

But I wish that you were here with my
