All organisms, regardless of their complexity, begin as a single cell.

A paroxysm of indignation passed through the community, as though it were a single organism, and the streets were filled with angry people ready to flight.

My biology teacher, Mr. Joseph, has a jar.
Not just any jar, mind you, but a jar of immense importance.
In 1996, Mr. Joseph filled the jar with pond water.
He put the cap on, and hasn't opened it since.
In this pond water tiny organisms thrive.
That jar is much like the Earth, Mr. Joseph says.
The living things of the Earth are independent of the rest of the universe and they don't care what's going on around them.

The living organisms, such as animals, get their energy by eating the plants.
Human beings eat both animals and plants to get energy.
Without green plants, the sun's energy could not be used on the earth, and all other organisms living on the earth would die.

An extremely important process, photosynthesis is the ultimate source of
food for almost all organisms on earth.

What communication does for an organization resembles what blood circulation does for an organism.
The blood stream supplies all the cells of the organism with oxygen;
the communication system supplies all the units―departments, people―of the organization with information.
Deprived of oxygen, the cells malfunction and die; deprived of necessary information, individuals and departments within the organization malfunction, which can certainly lead to a sort of terminal ineffectualness for them and for the organization as a whole.
On the other hand, a substantial body of research evidence confirms the commonsense proposition that accurate, relevant information, unless it arrives in an overwhelming quantity, improves decision making and other kinds of performance for individuals and groups.

The rock and dust kicked up by an asteroid impact 65 million years ago were not enough to kill the dinosaurs, according to researchers―but the debris may have sparked a deadly global chemical reaction in the atmosphere.
New studies show the Chicxulub impact crater on the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula is smaller than once thought, making dinosaur extinction difficult to explain completely.
Researchers presented those findings Sunday at the American Geophysical Union's fall meeting.
"If you rely on little pieces of debris actually clobbering organisms, then you're in trouble," said Virgil "Buck" Sharpton of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.

Each molecule of DNA, which looks like a twisted rope of a ladder, is made up of four chemicals generally abbreviated A, T, G and C.
When a cell divides, the entire sequence of its DNA must be duplicated into two faithful copies of the original; one copy goes to each of the "daughter" cells created by the division.
Occasionally, errors occur in this copying mechanism, creating mutations in the DNA sequence.
Such changes can occur in most cells in the body―liver, skin, muscle, etc.―without being transmitted to the offspring when the organism reproduces.
However, when mutations occur in the egg or sperm, or more generally in germline cells, they can be passed on to future generations.
Mutations are in general harmful to an organism;
but beneficial mutations that do occur rarely can form the basis for evolutionary adaptations that improve the fitness of an organism to its environment.

The ozone layer serves as Earth‘s shield from the Sun's longer wave-length UV radiation, or ultraviolet-B.
Ultraviolet-B is known to depress crop and forest growth, is a probable cause of skin cancer in humans, and is believed to affect the health and even the viability of a wide range of organisms and ecosystems.

The great challenge to theories of the natural evolution of biological species has always been to explain the development of order and complexity in organisms without resorting to the concepts of purpose and design.
The difficulty with purpose and design is, of course, the implication of the existence of a Designer who would have the purposes and designs, namely God.
Since philosophy, theology, and popular religion had always relied on the order and complexity of nature as evidence for the existence of God, producing some other kind of theory still seems to many contrary to the obvious.

What forms of life were able to make such a drastic change in lifestyle
? The traditional view of the first terrestrial organisms is based on
megafossils ― relatively large specimens of essentially whole plants
and animals. Vascular plants, related to modern seed plants and ferns,
left the first comprehensive megafossil record. Because of this, it has
been commonly assumed that the sequence of terrestrialization reflected
the evolution of modern terrestrial ecosystems. In this view, primitive
vascular plants first colonized the margins of continental waters,
followed by animals that fed on the plants, and lastly by animals that
preyed on the plant-eaters. Moreover, the megafossils suggest that
terrestrial life appeared and diversified explosively near the boundary
between the Silurian and the Devonian periods, a little more than 400
million years ago.

Recently, however, paleontologists have been taking a closer look at the
sediments below this Silurian-Devonian geological boundary. It turns out
that some fossils can be extracted from these sediments by putting the
rocks in an acid bath. The technique has uncovered new evidence from
sediments that were deposited near the shores of the ancient oceans ―
plant microfossils and microscopic pieces of small animals. In many
instances the specimens are less than one-tenth of a millimeter in
diameter. Although they were entombed in the rocks for hundreds of
millions of years, many of the fossils consist of the organic remains of
the organism.

These newly discovered fossils have not only revealed the existence of
previously unknown organisms, but have also pushed back these dates for
the invasion of land by multicellular organisms. Our views about the
nature of the early plant and animal communities are now being revised.
And with those revisions come new speculations about the first
terrestrial life-forms.

Active plant defense mechanisms are comparable to the immune system of
vertebrate animals, although the cellular and molecular bases are
fundamentally different. Both, however, are triggered in reaction to
intrusion, implying that the host has some means of recognizing the
presence of a foreign organism. The most dramatic example of an
inducible plant defense reaction is the hypersensitive response. In the
hypersensitive response, cells undergo rapid necrosis ― that is, they
become diseased and die ― after being penetrated by a parasite ; the
parasite itself subsequently ceases to grow and is therefore restricted
to one or a few cells around the entry site. Several theories have been
put forward to explain the bases of hypersensitive resistance.

Much has been written about the diversity of terrestrial organisms,
particularly the exceptionally rich life associated with tropical
rain-forest habitats. Relatively little has been said, however, about
diversity of life in the sea even though coral reef systems are
comparable to rain forests in terms of richness of life.

To appreciate fully the diversity and abundance of life in the sea, it
helps to think small. Every spoonful of ocean water contains life, on
the order of 100 to 100,000 bacterial cells plus assorted microscopic
plants and animals, including larvae of organisms ranging from sponges
and corals to starfish and clams and much more.

What little water falls there as rain or snow, mostly in the winter
months, evaporates on the broad, flat desert floors. It is, therefore,
an environment in which organisms battle for survival. Along the rare
watercourses, cottonwoods and willows eke out a sparse existence. In the
upland ranges, pinon pines and junipers struggle to hold their own.

Each advance in microscopic technique has provided scientists with new
perspectives on the function of living organisms and the nature of
matter itself. The invention of the visible-light microscope late in the
sixteenth century introduced a previously unknown realm of single-celled
plants and animals.
