contrary는 opposite에 갈등·적대의 뜻이 덧붙인 것으로 대립이 공교롭게도 불리한 것을 나타낸다. 단, 사람에 적용되는 경우에는 「심술궂은, 고집센」이라는 좋지 못한 뜻을 가지고 있다.

reverse는 반대 방향으로 면하거나 움직이는 것에 쓰인다.

adverse는 한층 개인적인 적의·악의를 가지고 있는 것, 반대되는 것뿐만이 아니고 또한 대항하는 것을 암시하고, 반대 당한 것이 큰 불행을 입는 것을 강조한다. adverse fortune(역운)이라고 하면, 나쁜 운수에서 악의가 활발히 움직이고 있는 것을 암시하는 점에서 ill fortune(불운)이라고 하는 것보다 한층 나쁜 것이다.
ex) The judge rendered a decision adverse to the defendant.(판사는 피고에게 불리한 판결을 내렸다.)
