And unfortunately, people continued to try to dwell on that competition.

The first organized system for sending messages began in Egypt around 1500 B.C.
This system developed because the pharaohs frequently needed to send messages up and down the Nile River.
They wanted to keep their empire running smoothly.
Later, the Persians developed a more efficient system for sending messages using men and horses.
Message carriers rode along the road system stretching from one end of the Persian Empire to the other.
Along these roads, fresh men and horses waiting at special stations took the messages and passed them on to next carriers.

If you get a blow-out while you are driving, you should know what to do.
A blow-out is a sudden flat tire.
It can be a very frightening experience, especially if you are traveling at high speeds.
If your car gets a blow out, the first thing to do is to hold very tightly to the steering wheel.
You can easily lose control of the car if you do not have a good hold of the steering wheel.
The next step is to get off the road.
However, you must not try to stop or turn too quickly.
After you check the traffic, you should move over to the side of the road and slow down gradually.
Then you should turn on your flashing lights so other cars can see you.

As we drove home, Dad did not say a word.
With both hands on the wheel, he stared at the dirt road.
My older brother, Robert, was also silent.
He leaned his head back and closed his eyes.
When I opened the front door to the hut, I stopped.
Everything we owned was packed in cardboard boxes.
I sat down on a box.
The thought of having to move to an unfamiliar city brought tears to my eyes.
That night I could not sleep, thinking about how much I hated this move.

He looked up and saw, on the bridge over his head, an overturned truck.
The truck had smashed into another truck.
The accident was so bad that all of the money the truck was carrying spilled into the road.
The wind was blowing hard, so the bills were floating all over.
He saw people running from everywhere.
They were shouting to each other to hurry up.
They were gathering money and putting it in purses and bags.
He had never seen people working so quickly.

A few years ago, due to road construction, my usual forty-five-minute commute was doubled.
I was spending ninety minutes to two hours in my car, twice a day!
During this time, my wife was away, traveling on business.
Each night we would talk on the phone, and I was quick to complain about the frustrations of my commute.

Go to any vacant lot and look around.
Under the “no dumping” signs you will find old tires, rusting sinks, junked refrigerators, and other trash.
There are also laws about the care of dogs, but some dog-owners seem to be ignorant of them.
They let their dogs run loose and do not clean up after them.
Perhaps the most disregarded of all laws are our traffic regulations.
More and more drivers are speeding, going through red lights, and double parking on the road.
And some drivers, apparently not even worrying about being fined,
have been parking in spaces clearly marked as reserved for the physically challenged.
These are some examples that show a lack of respect for the law.

Jimmy was not drunk, nor was he a reckless driver.
He fell asleep at the wheel, ran off the road, hit a ditch and went through the windshield.
The car flipped over on top of him.

A motor-vehicle survey has revealed that, in 1940, each car on the road contained
an average of 3.2 persons. In 1950, the occupancy had declined to 2.1 persons per car.
By 1960, the average was down to 1.4 persons. If we project the statistics to 1980,
every third car going by will have nobody in it.

Lean on me
Bill Withers
Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain we all have sorrow
But,if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow
-
**
Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
Till I'm gonna need somebody to lean on

Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can feel
Those of your needs that you won't let show

When you need a hand,
We all need somebody to lean me
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean me

Goodbye yellow brick road
Elton John
-
When are you gonna come down ?
When are you going to land ?
I should have stayed on the farm
I should have listened to my old man
You know you can't hold me forever
I didn't sign up with you
I'm not a present for your friends to open
This boy's too young to be singing the blues
-
(*)
So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back
Oh I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road
-
What do you think you'll do then
I bet they'll shoot down your plane
It'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics
To set you on your feet again
Maybe you'll get a replacement
There's plenty like me to be found
Mongrels who ain't got a penny
Sniffing for tib-bits like you.
On the ground
-
(* Repeat)
-

< Here I Go Again > performed by Whitesnake
==================================================
I don't know where I'm going
But, I sure know where I've been
Hanging on the promises
In songs of yesterday
An' I've made up my mind
I ain't wasting no more time
(문법적으로는 I'm not going to waste time anymore.
But, here I go again
Here I go again
Tho' I keep searching for an answer
[tho=tho'=though]
I never seem to find what I'm looking for
Oh Lord, I pray
You give me strength to carry on
Cos I know what it means
[cos=because]
To walk along the lonely street of dreams
An' here I go again on my own
Goin' down the only road I've ever known
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone
An' I've made up my mind
I ain't wasting no more time
I'm just another heart in need of rescue
Waiting on love's sweet charity
An' I'm gonna hold on
For the rest of my days
Cos I know what it means
To walk along the lonely street of dreams

Indeed, a lot of what researchers have learned about the biology of anxiety comes from scaring rats and then cutting them open.
Just as the Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov showed 100 years ago that you could condition a dog to salivate at the sound of a bell,
scientists today have taught rats to fear all kinds of things - from buzzers to lights - by giving them electrical shocks when they hear the buzzer or see the light.
The animals quickly learn to fear the stimulus even in the absence of a shock.
Then researchers destroy small portions of the rats' brains to see what effect that has on their reactions (an experiment that would be impossible to conduct in humans).
By painstakingly matching the damaged areas with changes in behavior, scientists have, bit by bit, created a road map of fear as it travels through the rat's brain.

There is nothing worse than driving on a two-lane road with a speed
limit of 40 mph and coming up behind someone going 25. You have to slow
down considerably, and it's frustrating when that driver will neither
speed up nor pull over. On highways where there are more lanes, slow
drivers should move to the right and let the faster drivers pass them.

It should really be a most discouraging fact that there is nothing much
one does for the good student, and nothing very much that one can do for
the poor one. In the case of the brilliant successes among former
students of mine, I am convinced they were in essence as sopho- mores
what they are now. If they are now learned men, they were already on the
road to learning in their sophomore year.

Many people burn coal for heat, but some people keep it for good luck.
How long they keep it depends on which superstition they believe in.
Some people say that it's fortunate to find a piece of coal on the open road, but only if the finder throws it over his left shoulder.
Others say that the coal, in order to be fortunate, must be carried for a few minutes and then thrown away.
The most extreme view is that, to get the most good fortune from a piece of coal, it must be carried all the way home and kept there.
According to this belief, as long as there's coal in the house, the members of the house will be fortunate forever.

Driving at close to 45 miles per hour on a straight stretch of road, Mary took little notice of a dump truck approaching from the opposite direction.
Suddenly a rock fell from the truck's load.
It bounced high off the pavement, directly into the path of her blue 1991 Ford.
At a great speed, the stone was rushing into her car.

You mean that?
Yeah, why not. So I told her.
Yeah? How'd it go?
Awful. Awful. Couldn'ta gone worse.
Well, howdya feel?
Pretty good! I told her.
Well, see? So, maybe it wasn't such a bad idea, y'know, me kissing your mom, uh? Huh? But.. we don't have to go down that road.
Okay. Now this is just the first chapter, and I want your absolute honest opinion. Oh, oh, and on page two, he's not 'reaching for her heaving beasts'.

[John's Diary]
The 2 minutes felt like 2 hours! I hurried out of the station
and ran towards the theater. I crashed into an oncoming lady.
A pile of papers the lady was holding dropped and scattered
everywhere. I apologized again and again, and broke into a
run. Well, today would not have been complete without so many
people on the street! The crowds added to the absurdity of it
all. It was disgustingly hot and humid, as usual. I finally
got to the theater and saw a never-ending line of people.
1. Hurried out of the station: Hurry
명사로 써서 in a hurry를 쓸 수도 있습니다.
I ran out of the station in a hurry.
2. Crashed into an oncoming lady: Crash
Hey, are you driving towards my house?
