[比較] journey, voyage, trip, travel, tour
a trip to Europe/ a vacation trip/ a bus trip
We went on a guided tour round the castle.
Rumours travel like lightening.

The standing man is waiting for the bus. (X)
The man standing over there is waiting for a bus.
The man standing there is waiting to take a bus.

Let's get on.
*get on v.타다
Let's get off the bus.(우리 버스에서 내리자.)
Let's get off.

Behave yourself.

Some time ago, a few of my friends and I went I to the beach by bus.
Somehow on that day I felt that I did not want to get wet.
I did not know why, but I had no wish to go swimming.
So I sat down on the straw mat that we had brought and spread out on the sandy beach.
I just wanted to relax and see the waves break on the seashore.

As the population of Curitiba grew fast, it needed a mass-trans system but couldn't afford an expensive subway.
City planners began, instead, with an unusual system of buses in the center lanes of five wide major streets.
At each bus stop, there is a forty-foot-long glass tube.
Passengers pay before they enter the tube.
Then they get on the bus “subway style”―through wide doors.
This allows people to get on and off the bus quickly and efficiently.
People don't crowd onto the bus; loading and unloading takes only thirty seconds.
This makes commuting more pleasant.

Expect the Unexpected!
You should prepare yourself to be tolerant of uncomfortable bus trips and unfamiliar food.
You may encounter people with different concepts about time and personal space.
Be ready to learn about and observe differences.
The differences you observe while abroad will undoubtedly enrich your understanding of your own culture.
Try to learn as much as possible about local customs, beliefs, and language.
Talk to others who have been to your destination and seek opportunities to see movies and read up on the country and culture.

Is chivalry dead?
Who can remember the days when a gentleman got up and gave his seat on a train or a bus to a woman who was visibly pregnant?

I was riding a public transit bus to work yesterday when a van ran a stop light, and the bus I was on hit the van's rear bumper.
The bumper fell off, and the door was slightly dented.
Because the bus driver was so skillful, we were spared what might have been a serious accident.

Two women seated directly across from me suddenly "fell" out of their seats, landed on the floor and started to moan.
One said, "I think my neck is broken. Call a doctor."
The other yelled, "I hurt my back. Get me an ambulance."
I was stunned.
The "falls" occurred fully two minutes after the bus had stopped.
The man sitting beside me whispered in my ear.
"Those women are looking to sue to transit company for injuries.
It's gotten to be quite a racket."

A moment later, two people got on the bus, lay down in the aisle and pretended they also had been injured in the "accident."
These people lay in the aisle until a policeman came aboard and an ambulance was called.
They were taken to the hospital for "observation."
This sort of deception makes me furious.
Decent people like you and me have to pay higher insurance premiums because of crooks who file phony claims.

The very moment he *yanked up his zipper, the bus *lurched and the woman seated next to him flipped the tail of her fox fur over her shoulder.
The fur got stuck in the man's zipper, and they were hopelessly entangled.
The woman, furious and not at all accepting of the man's apologies, suddenly yelled, "This is my stop!"
She got up to leave and of course, the man had to get off the bus with her.
The last my friend saw of this ill-fated couple was the two of them on the street corner, struggling to get free from one another.

Should a person own a car? This is an important question.
In a large urban area, there are some good reasons for owning a car.
First, a car allows a person to move around freely.
With a car, there is no need to check a bus schedule or wait for a train.
Second, a car is a comfortable way to travel, especially in the wintertime.
In bad weather, the driver stays warm and dry, while the poor bus or train rider might have to stand in the rain.
Finally, a driver is usually safe in a car at night.
The rider might need to walk down a dark street to get to a stop, or wait on a dark corner.

While riding the bus to work and back I always carry a magazine or a newspaper to read.
The bus is usually crowded, but since I get on early, I always get a seat.

A Los Angeles man makes a practice of saying the most outrageous
things in elevators to see what reaction he gets from other passengers. The
other day he was telling a friend, "I was on the No. 38 bus going to Santa
Monica when this girl got on completely naked..." He was interrupted by a
little old lady who said, "The 38 bus doesn't go to Santa Monica."

Traveling on a bus, I overheard a small boy asking his father numerous
questions, all of which were answered by, "I don't know, son."
Undaunted, the child persisted, with the same result.
Finally he asked, "Dad, do you mind me asking you all these questions?"
"Not at all, son" came the reply. "It's the only way to learn."

A science teacher was appointed to school in a remote village.
On his first day he talked about modern science and how it helps human
progress. He told about space craft and how man had walked on the moon.
When he finished his lecture, he asked if there were any questions.
"Sir," one student asked, "could you please tell us when they will start
a bus service through our village?"

I lost my wallet
I have lost my wallet.
wallet's gone! Someone stole it
=Some lifted it=Someone pickpocketed it. as well=too. I've got to~는 격식을
갖춘 영어에서는 I have to~로 말한다.

I’m going to the library. 나 혹은 I’m on
my way to the library. Where are going?

Oh, no!
Get
on the bus. [택시를 타라]는 Get in the taxi.
Never mind=Don't worry 걱정마. another는 부정대명사로서 막연히, 또

I sit on the empty bench and waited for the bus.

Today let me tell you about an experience I had on the bus. The bus was
full and I was standing near the door. As people got on, they stepped on
each other's feet and pushed one another in the back. I realized that the
riders didn't like it, but they understood that's the way it is. In my
country, when getting on a bus, people will apologize if they touch a
person at all. Where I come from, everyone worries about individual space
no matter where they are.

▶ Push another one in the push

Because we are not, I can't pretend now old friends
I was told love should hold old friends
I was told love should hold old friends
But when you leave
You will close the door behind you
And time won't make amends to old friends
Standing here with my arm around you
Life's moved on

When there was just a gang of us storming the town by train
and bus.
A moment of thought this heart sends to old friends.
Not for the first time I look back on my first love.
Unable to speak or think or move hand in glove.

But what of bit now really she who once meant so much to me.
Because we are not,I can't pretend now old friends.
I was told love should hold all the friends.
But when you leave, you will close the door behind you.
And time won't make amends to old friends.
Standing here with my arm around you,
Life's moved on.

[John's Diary]
It was passed the rush hour and they must have increased the
train intervals. It would take much longer than usual to get
to the theater, I thought. Shit! The theater was just a stop
away. What a day! Wasted time and money for nothing! At this
point I began to think that I should have tried running to
the theater. After about 10 minutes, I heard the next train
pulling in. People didn't bother to line up and stormed
towards the train. The PA system cranked out a warning to get
on the train in an orderly fashion, but that didn't prevent
the fat lady behind me from jumping the line and forcing her
way through the crowd.
1. It was passed the rush hour:
지났다고 할 때 It is passed ~를 씁니다.
2. They must have increased the train intervals: Train
She must have missed the train, or she should be here by now.
3. It would take much longer than usual: 여기서 would를 쓴
Will에도 추정의
4. Get to the theater: 도착하다는 arrive를 흔히 쓰지만,
When you get there, please call me.
5. For nothing:
Good for nothing이라는
You're good for nothing.
pull in한다고 합니다.
7. Didn't bother to line up:
Please, don't bother. It's too much of a hassle.
8. Stormed towards the train: Storm
The loan sharks stormed into my office.
9. The PA system cranked out a warning: PA는 public
Crank it up이라는 말도 잘 쓰는 데요.
10. Jumping the line:
Jump the gun이라는 말도
11. Force one's way through: 동사 + one's way + 전치사 형태는
He forced his way through the crowd.
He elbowed his way into the bus.
He felt his way out of the room.
She kept up the relationship with them.
그렇게 관계를 유지하는걸 keep up the relationship (with someone)이라고 합니다.
그냥 keep up with someone만 써도 같은 뜻이예요.
They've kept up with each other even as they broke up.
I try to keep up the relationship with those I met when I
worked as a teaching student.

Consumers' Price Index
Fare on international flights is also scheduled to rise by 15
percent beginning tomorrow, and subway fare is expected to
follow suit in the near future. Citing a sharp rise in import
prices of raw materials in the wake of the won's hefty
depreciation against the dollar, domestic manufacturers of
industrial goods have also raced to jack up the prices of
their products.
Taxi fare rose effective March
예문에서의 be expected to follow suit은 follow suit이 "~의
따라서 jack up the price of ~와 같은 표현도 잘 알아
(유가공제품), liquor (주류, alcohol도 가능), home appliances
Major manufacturers of dairy products are poised to raise the
prices 7 to 10 percent further. The prices of powdered milk
will be the first to go up.
be poised to ~는 "~을 할 준비를 갖추다," 즉 be ready to ~와
The

A:I hate being packed like sardines in a crowded bus.
B:I can't blame you. This morning the bus driver stepped on the brake

A:Didn't he apologize?
B:Nope. That's why I tried to walk up to the driver to complain. But

A:So, the driver tread on your corns?
B:Right. I got so angry that I shouted at the top of my lungs, and

◆ prefer, would rather
I prefer listening to music to watching TV.
I'd rather listen to music than watch TV. 'd rather
그리고, 만일 특정한 선택에 대해 말할 땐, would rather은 to 부정사를 수반한 would prefer to를 쓸 수 있어요.
I'd / you'd / he'd / she'd / we'd / they'd rather?
Would you like to go out for dinner tonight? ~ No, I think I'd rather eat at home / I'd prefer to eat at home.
Would you rather drink beer or wine with the curry ~ I'd rather drink beer. What about you?
They'd rather have the strawberries by themselves, but I'd prefer to have them with cream.
여러분들은 would rather이 to 부정사를 수반하지 않는 반면에 prefer requires to + infinitive로 to 부정사가 수반된다는 사실을 염두에 두셨으리라 생각됩니다. Would rather (but not would prefer to)의 다른 중요한 용법이 한 가지 더 있습니다.
Shall we go out for dinner tonight? ~ No, I'd rather we ate at home, if you don't mind.
Shall I write to Harry and tell him that we've sold the car? ~ I'd rather you didn't.
My mother would rather we caught the bus, rather than walk home after the party.
Rather than은 instead of의 뜻으로 쓰일 수 있습니다.
Rather than lose precious sleep discussing it now, I think we should go to bed and talk about it in the morning.
My mother would prefer us to email each other once a week, rather than spend half an hour on the phone every night.
My mother would rather we emailed each other once a week instead of spending half an hour on the phone every night. In fact, she insists on it. So we'd better do that, I suppose.
