When we think of money, we usually think of currency, or metal coins and paper bills.
In the modern world, almost every person uses money to exchange for other objects of value.
The sizes and shapes of coins are different in various countries, and the size and color of paper money vary.
In the United states, for example, all paper money is the same size and the same color;
only the printing on the bills is different.

Jean bought a small cellular phone for her boyfriend.
She wrapped the gift and put it on a table.
The next day, all that remained of the present was torn wrapping paper.
The woman searched her apartment for the phone, but found nothing.
She decided to dial the phone's number and heard it ringing where her dog was sleeping.
At first she thought the dog was lying on the phone, but then realized that the phone was ringing inside the dog.
She rushed the dog to the vet, who determined that the dog had indeed swallowed the phone.
The vet told the woman that her dog was not in danger and told her to let nature take its course.
The phone emerged from the dog the next day in perfect working order.
Jean

After Germany and Austria lost World War Ⅰ, inflation ruined their economies.
The governments printed huge quantities of paper money.
Naturally, the more they issued, the more worthless it became.
By 1922, the money wasn't even worth the paper on which it was printed.
A clever Swiss soap maker bought up all the Austrian money that he could find.
He realized that it was just the right size needed to wrap his soap.
He printed the name of the soap on the blank side.
Then, he put his money-wrapped soap on the market and waited.
Just as he had hoped, his soap sales escalated.
Many buyers bought the soap, hoping that someday the “wrappers” would be worth just as much as they were before the war.

The history of fan dates back to the ancient times in Korea.
Murals from ancient tombs show that the ones made of feathers were in use even before the 4th century.
At first, it was just a device to cool with.
But other uses were added as bamboo and paper came into use.
For example, people covered their faces with it to avoid strong sunlight or to hide from their creditors,
and sometimes they even flapped off flies with it.
This device was also used in an artistic way by ancient scholars.
They wrote a poem or painted a picture on it.
In itself, it is just an appliance.
However, a brush stroke on its white canvas creates a transformation and makes it a work of art.

The first year of my college was terrible for me.
I didn't know how to handle myself.
I had a growing fear that I might flunk out.
The turnaround came one day during my second semester, on a day when my English professor was returning some essay papers to the class.
She held mine up, and I could see all the red marks and comments she had put on it.
I thought, “Oh, what is she going to do? Criticize my work in front of all these other students?”
Instead, she said, “Your grammar and spelling need a lot of work, Arthur, but this is an example of a very well-organized paper.”
Surely she had no idea what she had done for me.
She had blessed me with an affirmation.
She had shown me I could do something.

What a computer is designed to do is, essentially, arithmetic.
Any problem, however complex, can somehow be broken down into a well-defined series of arithmetical operations that can be solved by a computer.
The computer is amazing not because of its capability to handle arithmetical operations,
but because of the fact that it can perform these operations in one billionth of a second without error.
The human brain, on the other hand, is incredibly poor at arithmetic.
Unlike computers, it needs and has always needed outside help to solve the simplest problems.
We began by counting on our fingers, and have moved on to better things only with the help of pen and paper, Arabic numerals, mechanical calculators and eventually computers.

My coworker Lewis is an environmentalist.
He is up to date on every environmental cause.
He strictly separates his trash, he doesn't use chemicals on his lawn, and he drives a small car to save oil and reduce pollution.
Lewis is not afraid to lecture his peers when he sees them doing something that might harm our environment.
Today Lewis and I met at the copy machine.
I asked Lewis how his paper recycling drive was going.
“Well, you're not participating,” he said.
“Oh, I'm sorry,” I said.
“I should have joined you.”
Then I saw what he was copying: a handwritten note of about three sentences.
He had made dozens of copies.
“Why didn't you make one copy, and then double it up? You could have saved a lot of paper,” I told him.
Lewis smiled weakly.
“Oh, you're right.
Normally I would have, but I'm late for a meeting.”

My boss refuses to use paper cups.
He insists on ceramic mugs when he serves coffee to business associates during meetings.
When guests ask where they can wash out the cups, he says, "Just leave it, my administrative assistant will clean up."

I finally told Joe I will no longer clean up after the dogs.
Now he cleans up the messes on the tile floor with household cleaner and a paper towel, but I don't consider that adequate.
He ignores the carpeting altogether.
I realize this is a ridiculous reason to break up a really good marriage but I can't take this much longer.

Go get me the paper on the table.

At a trial in Detroit's Recorder's Count, a young woman who had accused the
defendant of making an improper proposal was asked to state the question that
allegedly had been asked. It embarrassed her to repeat it, so she was permitted to
write it on a piece of paper. After the judge, prosecutor and defense counsel had
read it, it was passed to the jury. Each juror read it, and gave it to the next juror.
After an attractive female juror had read it, she attempted to pass it to the man on
her right, but found him dozing. Without comment, she nudged him and gave him
the slip of paper. The awakened juror read the note, smiled at her, nodded and put
the note in his pocket!

* recorder: a judge who has the same criminal jurisdiction as a police judge

Most people have covered the windowpanes of their homes or apartments with
thick black paper or tinfoil, in order to keep the lights on during the blackout. The
reason is not so much the fear of air strikes as the noisy urging of young people and
children who act as self-appointed civil defense wardens. The briefest glimpse of light
from a window starts a chorus of "Turn it off" from a dozen directions.

While picking up a prescription at the drugstore, I noticed that I had been
charged three dollars too much. The pharmacist said he would put the
overpayment on the computer, to be applied toward the next refill.
A few weeks later I returned, and the clerk failed to deduct the three
dollars. "Look on the computer," I told him. He walked over to it.
Sure enough, the information was there. Taped to the monitor was a piece
of scratch paper that said: "We owe Mr. Hurst $3."

Actually, the contents of the paper deal with subjects that I am not
really up on.

It is very difficult for people to understand each other if they do not
share the same experience. For example, there is a folk tale that comes
from the foothills of the Himalayas. A man was trying to explain to a
blind friend what a white color is. "Well," he said,"it is like snow on
the hills." "Oh, the blind man said, "then it must be a wet sort of
color." "No, no," the man said, " it is also the same color as cotton or
wool." "Oh, yes, I understand. It must be a fluffy color." "No, it is
also like paper." "Then it must be a fragile color," said the blind man.

Oh, this rain
It will continue through the morning
As I'm listening to the bells of the cathedral
I'm thinking of your voice
And of the midnight picnic
Once upon a time before the rain began
And I finish up my coffee
And It's time to catch the train

Seven Daffodils
Brothers Four
I may not have a mansion I haven't any land
Not even a paper dollar to crinkle in my hand
-
But I can show you morning on a thousand hills
And kiss you and give you seven daffodils
-
I do not have a fortune to buy you pretty things
But I can weave you moon beams for necklaces and rings
-
And I can show you morning on a thousand hills
And kiss you and give you seven daffodils
-
Oh, Seven golden daffodils are shining in the sun
To light away to evening when our days is done
-
And I will give you music and a crust of bread
A pillow of piney boughs to rest your head
A pillow of piney boughs to rest your head

Puff The Magic Dragon -sung by Brothers Four
-
Puff the magic dragon
Lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist
In a lnad called Honalee
Little Jackie Paper
Loved that rascal Puff
And brought him strings and
Sealing wax
And other fancy stuff
-
Together they would travel
On a boat with billowed sails
And jackie kept a lookout
Perchaed on Puff's gigantic tail
Noble kings and princes
Would bow wherever they came
And pirate ships
Would lower their flags
When Puff roared outn his name
-
A dragon lives forever
But not so little boys
Painted wings and giants' rings
Make way for other toys
One grey night it happened
Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon
He ceased his fearless roar
-
His head was bent in sorrow
Green scales fell like rain
Puff no longer went to play
Along the cherry lane
Without his lifelong friend
Puff could not be brave
So Puff that mighty dragon
Sadly slipped into his cave

-
**
-

In the old days, students who wanted to cheat on a book report or a research paper had to go to the library, search in books for the information, copy it by hand or make photocopies of the pages, then go home and retype it into the finished report.
It was a time-consuming procedure.

But many professors are cutting down on the cheating by requiring students to turn in outlines, followed by rough drafts, then the finished paper, forcing students to do the project in steps.
There are also computer programs now which can detect the difference in writing styles between one part of the paper and another, signaling if a paper was written by two or more different people.

The Ministry of Environment released a White Paper, which shows that air and water pollution nationwide are becoming increasing problems with little signs of improvement in reducing major atmospheric contaminants such as dust, nitrogen dioxide and ozone.
The concentration of ozone also increased nationwide, while pollution by sulfur dioxide on average improved slightly.

The experiment was described in a paper presented to the Paris Academy
in 1894. Two sequences of twenty photographs each, one from the side and
one from behind, show a white cat in the act of righting itself. Grainy
and quaint though they are, the photos show that the cat was dropped
upside down, with no initial spin, and still landed on its feet. Careful
analysis of the photos reveals the secret ; As the cat rotates the front
of its body clockwise, the rear and tail twist counterclockwise, so that
the total spin remains zero, in perfect accord with Newton's laws.
Halfway down, the cat pulls in its legs before reversing its twist and
then extends them again, with the desired end result. The explanation
was that while no body can acquire spin without torque, a flexible one
can readily change its orientation, or phase. Cats know this
instinctively, but scientists could not be sure how it happened until
they increased the speed of their perceptions a thousandfold.

Cro-Magnon cave paintings some 27,000 years old commonly show outlines
of human hands made by placing one hand against the cave wall and
applying paint with the other. Children today make similar outlines of
their hands with crayons on paper. With few exceptions, left hands of
Cro-Magnons are displayed on cave walls, indicating that the paintings
were usually done by right-handers.

The most qualified people don't always get the job. It goes to the
person who presents himself most persuasively in person and on paper. So
don't just list where you were and what you did. This is your chance to
tell how well you did.

Some products use too much packaging.
Boxes of chocolates may have up to seven layers of wrapping: silver foil around the chocolates, a plastic tray, cardboard on top of the tray, the box that contains the chocolates, plastic film around the box, gift wrapping and a paper or plastic bag to carry the box of chocolates in.

We also try to do more than one thing at once.
For example, a student may write a paper, eat breakfast, and put on his or her shoes all at the same time.
Finally, of course, we may simply rush by doing things such as running to catch a bus.
