a flash in the pan: 용두사미, 불발(something that starts out well but that may not continue)
ex) I got a 100 on the final test, but that was just a flash in the pan. I got low scores on all the rest of the tests, and I was barely able to pass the course.

Don't burn your bridges.:
→ 상대방의 도움을 필요로 하는 때를 생각하여, 좋은 인간관계를 유지하도록 권유하는 경우에 사용.(=Don't leave on bad terms./ Don't cut yourself off./ You may need help in the future.)

→ 지구를 선회비행하다: orbit around the earth
What is still more wonderful,…
→ 100년전으로 돌아가다: go back a century
(ANS) In imagination through books, we are with Charles Linberg in his nonstop flight from New York to Paris, or with modern spacemen on their ship orbiting around the earth. Without a ticket, we may go on a journey to any part o the world we choose. What is still more wonderful, we may go back a century, or many centuries.

→ 「1980년 5월 8일에」는 on the eighth of May 1980/ on May 8th, 1980라고 하면 된다.
On eighth of May는 잘못. Of를 사용하면 the가 필요. 또 on the eighth (in May)로 하지 말 것.
→ 「 (화산이) 폭발하다」 erupt/ 「 폭탄이 폭발했다」라면 A bomb exploded (또는 went off).
(ANS) It was almost a decade ago, on May 8th, 1980, that Mount St. Helens erupted.

→ 날씨가 좋은 날이 아니면: except on fine days (or when the weather is fine); unless the weather is beautiful
→ 제트기로 짐짝처럼 운반되는 것: being transported by jet like a package
또 far from이 있다.
→ 시간이 좀 걸리더라도: though it may take a longer time (또는 more time); however long it may take
(ANS) Planes take you to your destination much more quickly, but they don't afford you much pleasure on the way. Except on fine days they usually fly over monotonous clouds. Being transported by jet though the clouds like a package is anything but interesting. I prefer traveling by train or by ship, although it may take a longer time.

→ 앞으로는: in the near future; in the world of the future
→ 사용할 줄 알다: can handle well; have a good command of
→ 결정하다: decide; depend on
(ANS 1) In the world of the future, whether one will succeed as an office worker may depend on one's ability to use a computer.
(ANS 2) In the near future, success as an office worker may depend on whether a person an handle computers well.

[比較] accompany, attend, escort
His wife accompanied him on his trip to London./ He attended her to the concert./ May I escort you to your car?

[比較] legal, lawful, licit, legitimate
ex) legal rights/ a legal marriage
ex) lawful heir/ a lawful but shady enterprise(합법적이기는 하나 미심쩍은 기업)/ That man was not Miss. Kim's lawful husband.
ex) the legitimate monarch/ the legitimate heir of an estate
ex) A lie may be considered legitimate if a patient's restoration to health depends on it.

ex) Clinton seemed to gloss over such concerns last May when he decided that China should retain its most-favored-nation trading status despite its intransigence on human-rights issues.

The conference may help focus attention on the economy

A persistent vegetative state refers to a condition where a person is awake but lacks awareness of their surroundings.
It is typically caused by severe brain damage, often resulting from a traumatic injury or illness.
Individuals in this state may exhibit reflexive movements and basic functions like breathing and digestion,
but they do not show any signs of conscious thought, perception, or communication.
The condition is considered permanent if it lasts for more than a few months.
Medical interventions focus on providing supportive care and ensuring the patient's comfort.

This is to say that President Kim has, if belatedly, come to take a
more realistic and reasonable view of his political program to effect a
generational shift in the country's political leadership and in particular
to force the retirement of the two Kims. It appears the President may
have concluded that his policy to get rid of the two Kims might best be
implemented through the forthcoming 1997 presidential elections and
that outright political pressure or maneuvering might only make
them hang on longer.

On the other hand, the two opposition Kims can maintain or elevate
their political stature as "partners in politics" with President Kim. At the
same time, the two may well take advantage of the summit to expound
their views and present policy opinions to the President, in an effort to
sharpen their political offensives.

Idiocy and immaturity may perhaps be the best description for the
mentality of these young students who account for a small minority of
the nation's total university enrollment. Still it requires deep scrutiny
of government and school authorities on how the radical ``Jusa-pa''
students got elected to leadership positions at their respective schools
and how this so-called NL (National Liberation) faction held the
hegemony in the nation's student movement through all these years.

That sum may seem inconsequential to you, but to me it is the difference between going away on a wonderful vacation and being utterly bored at home.

The safety rules for the science lab are based on long experience, and if you transgress them, you may have to pay a heavy price.

We learned that an eclipse of the sun may occur in a limited area on the earth when moon passes between the earth and the sun.

It is often believed that the function of school is to produce knowledgeable people.
If schools only provide knowledge, however, they may destroy creativity, producing ordinary people.
We often hear stories of ordinary people who, if education had focused on creativity, could have become great artists or scientists.
Those victims of education should have received training to develop creative talents while in school.
It really is a pity that they did not.

Storms affect birds in a variety of ways.
When a storm is approaching, birds may stop flying and rest nearby trees.
If the coming storm is a severe one, the birds may fly off to an area where the weather is clear.
Birds may appear uneasy and nervous when a storm is on its way.
They might become noisier.
When a snowstorm is coming, birds may eat more, too.
They seem to realize that food might be difficult to get for a while.

Diamonds are older than nearly everything else on earth.
They have been used to cut glass, cure snakebites, and charm kings and queens.
Famed for their flashing beauty, diamonds are the hardest substance on earth and among the most useful.
However, digging for diamonds is an expensive and exhausting operation.
Miners may dig through about 250 tons of rock to find just one stone.

In the future doctors will diagnose illnesses differently, or we may not need doctors at all.
We may be able to decide for ourselves what the problem is.
We might look up symptoms on the Internet and order a testing kit to check our blood for diseases we have.
We may not even have to do this.
We may actually have microchips in our bodies examining our blood pressure, temperature, and heartbeat on a daily basis.

Possibly the most effective way to focus on your goals is to write them down.
Although this may sound like an obvious first step, it is a step that many people ignore.
As a result, their goals often remain unfocused, and therefore unrealized.
Go to a fairly quiet place where you are not likely to be disturbed.
Make a list of every goal you have.
Include goals about finances, relationships, and your career.
Be as specific as possible.

In 1912, Jim Thorpe won gold medals in the Olympics in Sweden.
When Jim's picture appeared in newspapers around the world, however, an American reporter recognized him.
He remembered watching Jim play on a pro baseball team in 1911.
The Olympic Committee was told of this.
There's a rule that says an Olympic athlete may not play for money.
So his medals were taken away from him.

“Super Size Me” is a documentary film on a guy who ate only hamburgers for a while.
It was intended to show how harmful fast foods are to our health.
I believe the experiment is highly educational.
The results of the experiment are truly shocking and I hope this documentary will cause people to be aware of the problem of obesity.
I suggest schools should show this movie in classes.
Although it may be hard for kids to believe such results,
they need to learn that they have to be responsible for what they eat.

Life is determined by a series of choices, each one building on the one before.
The significance of each individual choice may not seem that great.
When added together, however, all the choices put you where you are.
Most people agonize over the big choices and don't even think about the little ones,
though the little choices are what make the big ones possible.
Little choices such as what to eat and how much exercise to do will eventually determine how long you live.

Like most of William Shakespeare's plays, “Romeo and Juliet” is based on earlier sources,
which in this case go back to some stories popular in Italy in the late 1400s.
These stories were transformed into a poem in English by a poet named Brooke.
Today Brooke's poem has been forgotten, but Shakespeare's play lives on.
What makes Shakespeare's play live is its dramatic power and its remarkable language.
That language, beautiful as it is, may seem strange to modern readers,
especially to young readers encountering the play for the first time.
William Shakespeare

The pyramids and other tombs were built on the west bank of the Nile River.
The Egyptians chose the west bank as the “land of the dead” because that was where the dying sun disappeared each evening.
The building of the pyramids was generally started during the dry season of May and June.
The crops of the year before had been harvested.
The farmers had no work to do in the fields.
The farmers became pyramid builders.
They were paid for their labor in food and clothing.
