* What would you do(if you were) in my shoes?
을 in my shoes라고 표현한 것이
The shoe is on the other foot

People were able to travel faster and farther with horses.
They were able to leave their own land.
Many people went to distant lands, met new people, and saw new places.
They taught other people how to use horses.
Then, about 3,500 years ago, people in Mesopotamia began to use horses to help them win wars against their enemies.
They drove chariots, or carts, pulled by two or more horses.
It was impossible for an enemy on foot to fight against a soldier in a chariot.
As a result, armies with horses and chariots were very powerful.

As the population of Curitiba grew fast, it needed a mass-trans system but couldn't afford an expensive subway.
City planners began, instead, with an unusual system of buses in the center lanes of five wide major streets.
At each bus stop, there is a forty-foot-long glass tube.
Passengers pay before they enter the tube.
Then they get on the bus “subway style”―through wide doors.
This allows people to get on and off the bus quickly and efficiently.
People don't crowd onto the bus; loading and unloading takes only thirty seconds.
This makes commuting more pleasant.

One step at a time, I move closer to the window until I am just below it.
Then, standing on an old box, I pull myself up the window and see the elephant's eye only a foot away.
Long, straight eyelashes partially cover his eye as he looks toward the ground searching for fruit.
Then, as he picks up one with his long trunk and puts it into his mouth, he lifts his eyes and looks directly at me.
He shows neither surprise nor concern, and I stare into the gray of an elephant's eye forever.
This kind of thing may happen in other areas of Africa, but not in the Luangwa Valley of Zambia.

" Standing in one place all the time is one of the worst things you can do to your feet,"

"The muscles don't flex or contract; they are just static."
One solution is to step on and off a raised surface, such as a telephone book, to give your muscles some work.
Or take your shoes off and roll a golf ball behind the ball of each foot for a minute or two.

Irish McCauley, at five-foot-two, was the smallest and most picked-on
boot in our platoon at Parris Island. The day he was caught with his hands
in the pockets of his fatigues, the drill instructor made him fill the
pockets with dirt so he'd be sure to keep his hands out. Next morning at
reveille when the platoon snapped to attention, the usually stern DI
suddenly doubled up with laughter. Glancing down the ranks, I saw McCauley
with daffodils protruding from every pocket. "They grew overnight, sir," he
solemnly assured the DI.

The new Prime Minister decided early on to retain many of his predecessor's
domestic programs, such as literacy lessons and unemployment relief, and, as a
consequence, found himself committed to programs that will cost at least $2.5 billion
over the next three years. To foot the bill and to whittle down Jamaica's balance
of payments deficit ($700 million last year), the Prime Minister, a Harvard-educated
sociologist before he turned to politics, put together a complicated financial
package.

I was born on an island. When I left it at the age of five, I had never
set foot on three-quarters of it. I had recently met a woman born on the
other side of the world from me. But she had visited this island on which
my family had lived for generations. She named a village by the sea and
then went on to describe a view that was unknown to me. I was so ashamed
that I could hardly reply, for I had come to believe that people should
know everything about their homeland.

Fifty volunteers were alphabetically divided into two equal groups,
Group A to participate in a 7 week exercise program, and Group B to
avoid deliberate exercise of any sort during those 7 weeks. On the day
before the exercise program began, all men participated in a step-test.
This consisted of stepping up and down on a 16-inch bench at 30 steps a
minute for 5 minutes. One minute after completion of the step-test, the
pulse rate of each subject was taken and recorded. This served as the
pretest for the experiment. For the next 7 weeks, subjects in the
experimental group (Group A) rode an Exercycle (a motor-driven
bicycle-type exercise machine) for fifteen minutes each day. The
exercise schedule called for riders to ride relaxed during the first
day's ride, merely holding on to the handle bars and foot pedals as the
machine moved. The ratio of active riding was increased every few days.

The great cities have been built with no regard for us. The shape and
dimensions of the skyscrapers depend entirely on the necessity of
obtaining the maximum income per square foot of ground, and of offering
to the tenants offices and apartments that please them. This caused the
construction of gigantic buildings where too large masses of human
beings are crowded together. Civilized men like such a way of living.
While they enjoy the comfort and banal luxury of their dwelling, they do
not realize that they are deprived of the necessities of life.

A tribe of Plains Indians, the Assiniboins, had the distinction of hunting on
foot. During the winter months the hunters wore snowshoes to chase the buffalo
into the deep snow, where the animals were easily killed. The Assiniboins were
thrifty people who utilized all of their dead prey: the meat was their food;
their clothing came from the hides; their tools and weapons came from the bones
and horns. Once the other parts had been disposed of, the children used the
buffalo's ribs as sleds.

The small shrub, with thin leaves and little white or yellow
flowers, has a "male" taproot or a "female" forked root
and grows at more than 2,500 meters (8,000 feet) on Mount
Hermon, at the joint borders of Lebanon, Syria and Israel.
"This is its home," said a resident of a village at the
foot of Mount Hermon in southeast Lebanon.

[John's Diary]
On her way, she stepped real hard on my foot with her
high-heels. I saw stars. She took the only seat left in the
train, with a mean, victorious grin on her lips. I put my bag
on the overhead rack and waited for the train to start. When
all the passengers were aboard, the door slammed shut. It was
really stuffy since the air was so damp and filled with B.O.
The air-conditioner was definitely out of order. Hot air came
in through the windows that had been left open. About a 2
minutes ride got me to the Neo Station.
1. On her way: On one's way (to somewhere)
On one's way만 쓰면 "어디에 가는
Get me a coke on your way.
2. Step on my foot with her high-heels:
3. Saw stars:
See red
I saw red when she told me so.
4. With a mean, victorious grin: Mean
5. Overhead rack:
6. The door slammed shut:
8. Since the air was so damp: 여기서 since는 이유를
9. Filled with B.O.:
10. A 2 minutes ride got me to the Neo Station:
It took 2 minutes for me to get to the Neo Station.
It takes an hour to get to my home on foot.
An hour's walk will get you to my home.

[John's Diary]

But, today, I was lucky. All the cars in front of my spot
were gone, so I could easily drive out. The fuel gauge on the
dashboard was on empty. I thought I'd gas up on the way. It
was only after I buckled up that I found the driver's side
mirror had been pushed back out of position. Grumbling, I got
out, set it properly, got back in the car. After adjusting
the rear view mirror and side mirrors to get a clean view, I
started the engine. I left a window open a little bit to keep
the windshield from fogging up. I put my foot on the gas
pedal. The damn blind spots make it hard for me to back out.

'The first is
the hardest'라고 표현한다.
A:The first step is always the hardest. Once you start, you'll know
that it's easy and fun.
B:But I've never tried it.
A:Don't worry. All you have to do is follow my lead.
B:If you insist.
A:Are you ready?
B:I guess so.
A:Please hold my hand, and follow me. One,two, three.
B:Like this? One,two,three?
A:That's it. I'm sure you would be able to dance gracefully, except
that you keep stepping on my foot.

A:바로 그겁니다.
