Diamonds are older than nearly everything else on earth.
They have been used to cut glass, cure snakebites, and charm kings and queens.
Famed for their flashing beauty, diamonds are the hardest substance on earth and among the most useful.
However, digging for diamonds is an expensive and exhausting operation.

Mom was an extraordinarily clean person.
After feeding my brother and me breakfast, she would scrub, mop, and dust everything.
As we grew older, Mom made sure we did our part by keeping our rooms neat.
Outside, she would tend a small flower garden, which was the envy of the neighborhood.
With Mom, everything she touched turned to gold.
She didn't believe in doing anything halfway.
She often told us that we always had to do our best in whatever we did.

With Europeans having fewer babies and generally living longer, the population is getting older.
Infants born today will live eight years longer on average than those born in 1950.
An aging society means fewer workers will support more retirees, with pensions and healthcare costs rising high.
This development will affect almost every aspect of their lives.

Friendships develop and are maintained to satisfy our needs.
If we have the need to be the center of attention or to be popular,
we choose friends who fulfill these needs
―that is, people who allow us, and even encourage us, to be the center of attention or who tell us, verbally and nonverbally, that we are popular.
As we grow older or develop in different ways, our needs change,
and in many instances old friends are dropped from our close circle to be replaced by new friends who better serve our new needs.

Reporter: Where did you get ideas for your fantasy movies?
Mr.Ray:Well, I had all the fears that a lot of kids have.
I was frightened of the dark, of the wind in the trees.
I imagined horrible monsters living in my bed.
Even Snow White gave me a nightmare.
But as I grew older, this kind of fear gradually changed to fascination.
This fascination gave me inspiration for my movies.
Reporter: How did you get interested in making movies?
Mr.Ray:My father had a movie camera.
He would take pictures of my family.
At twelve, I borrowed my father's camera and started making movies:
writing scripts for my family and filming family events.
That's how I started my first movie.
You know what? Actually, I didn't ever give that camera back to my father.

As we drove home, Dad did not say a word.
With both hands on the wheel, he stared at the dirt road.
My older brother, Robert, was also silent.
He leaned his head back and closed his eyes.
When I opened the front door to the hut, I stopped.
Everything we owned was packed in cardboard boxes.
I sat down on a box.
The thought of having to move to an unfamiliar city brought tears to my eyes.
That night I could not sleep, thinking about how much I hated this move.

Every human being will grow older and die.
Aging in itself is not a disease or a sickness, but as people age, disease often follows and the elderly need others' help.
In addition, the percentage of senior citizens in the world has increased very quickly, and our society is no exception.
The problem for us is that we have left the care of the elderly to their families.
We must change our attitude toward this issue and develop more systematic social programs.
The sooner we realize the importance of the role of government in this matter, the smaller the final cost to society as a whole will be.

Bill : School education should include the skills needed in adult life as well as the study of knowledge and information.
Sports develop such skills by showing students how to keep fit, how to work in a team, and how to practice self-discipline.
Children who haven't been given the chance to take part in physical activities can lose out on social skills when they get older.
On the other hand, if forced to take part in sports in school, they may well discover hidden talents.
Many famous sports people started their careers in this way.
Given this fact, everybody should take a sports class in school.

However, the language sounds strange to me.
They mix Chinese characters, Japanese characters, numbers, and symbols in a strange way,
and I can’t figure out what they are trying to say.
It is a scary thing.
Beyond distorting and abbreviating words, it completely destroys the existing language.
Some people say I shouldn’t take it so seriously.
They think it’s funny and it’s just a trend among young people online.
At any age, the young generation has always wanted to create its own world, separate from the older generations.

But what I really worry about is that the new language used by the youth on the Internet is becoming even more common than proper Korean.
The strange language has already made its way into the children’s diaries and homework.
When they become grown-ups, two different languages might be used in Korea.
They might think Korean used by older generations is an alien language.
It’s really scary just imagining it.

There is little doubt that early people passed family beliefs from one generation to another by telling stories.
We call this storytelling oral history because older members of families told younger members about their memories by talking about events in the past.
It is possible that some of our favorite legends began as stories thousands of years ago, but we have no written proof that this is so.
If we say that history began with writing, then history is only about 6,000 years old.
That is when the umerians in Mesopotamia began keeping records, using symbols on clay tablets.

Older people can strengthen their brains as well.
A university studied a group of seniors, who aged from seventy to seventy-nine.
Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week.
The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate.

A twelfth-century couple, Heloise and Abelard, is often mentioned when romantic love becomes the subject of scholarly discussion.
When they met, Heloise was the niece of a wealthy scholar.
Abelard was the most famous teacher in France.
Older and vastly more educated, Abelard became the girl's tutor.
The two fell in love.
When Heloise bore a son, they married in secret.
The couple did not want Abelard's career to be hurt by scandal.
However, when Heloise's uncle found out what happened, he forced the girl to become a nun.

It's not all bad news for men, though.
In a related study, the team found that the hearts of veteran male athletes were as powerful as those of inactive 20-year-old male undergraduates.
But can men really recover lost heart function after a lifetime of inactivity and poor diet? Is it ever too late to start exercising?
“I think the answer is no,” says a doctor.
“The health benefits to be gained from sensible exercise are to be recommended, regardless of age.”
So if you are male and getting older, get on with it.

Today the suburban ring can be regarded as an outer city which increasingly controls the economic and social life of the metropolitan sector.
At the same time, it should be noted that the rapid growth of suburbs has created many problems.
For example, numerous suburbs have had trouble raising enough money for such essential services as police and fire protection.
Furthermore, residents often engage in debates over the quality of the schools in the communities and the amount of taxes required to support them.
Particularly in older suburbs, population change may produce conflict between social groups.

Falls are a serious public health problem among older adults.
More than a third of adults aged 65 years and older fall each year.
For seniors, the risk of falling may be heightened by medications that cause dizziness or that can impair balance.
Falls can also result from diminished vision, hearing, and muscle strength.
Fortunately, preventing falls is a matter of common sense.
You can start by targeting the bathroom.
Securely attach non-slip grab bars and rubber mats in tubs and showers.
Install a raised toilet seat if needed.

More than 60 percent of adults do not perform a minimum 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily.
Worse, 25 percent are completely inactive.
This sedentary life style increases as we grow older and is even more common among women than men.
Some reports make clear that this widespread inactivity contributes to "premature death and unnecessary illness" for millions of people each year.
It's true that people can optimize their fitness by taking up moderate physical sports such as walking or jogging.
But it's not necessary to disrupt your hectic daily schedule by rushing off to a gym, swimming pool or jogging track.

And pleasure that I get from my children is diminished by the realization that they will probably distance themselves from me as they grow older.

Shortly after Daughter No. 2 returned from her honeymoon, she asked for the same amount of money we had spent on her sister's education.
My husband told her he would have sent her to college had she chosen to go, but we could not give her that much money.
I've felt bad about this for a long time because I'm afraid she feels we favored her older sister.

Of course, as we grow older, we learn that the blunt expression of such curiosity will not put us at the top of the popularity charts.
We learn how to be kind, considerate of others' feelings, silent about their flaws, approving of their virtues.
We learn how to get along in the world by "not making waves."
In short, we become socially "acceptable."

Where have we failed? Is it hereditary, or what? The older one has outgrown
the habit, but I still find her with her thumb in her mouth when she sleeps.
It's the younger one I'm worried about. He keeps his thumb in his mouth
all the time, expect when he eats or cries.

Two psychiatrists, one old and one young, both show up each day for work
immaculately dressed and alert. At the end of the day, the young doctor is
frazzled and disheveled; the older man, fresh as ever.
"How do you do it?" the young psychiatrist asked his colleague.
"You always stay so fresh after hearing patients all day."
The doctor replied, "I never listen."

One afternoon my younger sister, Connie, phoned me. "I have company coming
for dinner tomorrow," she said, "but I can't decide what to serve."
I gave her some simple recipes for a complete menu. Surprised that she

Connie why.
"Because," she replied, "I knew that if you could make it, I could."

Youth is inspiration. One of the tragedies of the arts is the spectacle of
the vast number of persons who have been misled by this passing fertility
to devote their lives to the effort of creation. Their invention deserts
them as they grow older, and they are faced with the long years before
them in which, unfitted by now for a more humdrum calling, they harass
their wearied brain to beat out material it is incapable of giving them.
They are lucky when, with what bitterness we know, they can make a living
in ways, like journalism or teaching, that are allied to the arts.

Imagine two basketball teams, each composed of half of five pairs of
identical twins. But one team has the institution of authority and the
other does not.
The one with authority simply has the custom that if one of the members
wears a red arm band, the others will obey his instructions; not because
he is stronger, or smarter, or older, or a better player, just because
he wears the arm band. The other team has no way of selecting a leader.
Clearly the first team will have a much greater chance of beating the
second team.

A:How old are you?
B:Nine..., but I'll be ten on May sixteenth.

May I ask how old you are?
May I ask your age? Nine은 I'm nine years old를 줄인 말이다.
I'll be ten on May 14th라고

Argument Is often considered disrespectful in rigid families. Arguing,
however, is a way of life with normal developing youths. In early
adolescence they'll argue with their parents about anything. As they grow
older, the quantity of argument decreases but the quality increases.
Arguing is something that adolescents need to do in their family life.

Take a bow
The night is over
This masquerade is getting older
Lights are low
The curtains are down
There's no one here there's no one here
There's no one in the crowd
Say your lines
But do you feel them
Do you mean what you say when there's no one around
Watching you, watching me
One lonely star one lonely star
I've always been in love with you
I guess you've always known
It's true
You took my love for granted why oh, why

The spectacular bursting of the Internet bubble has resulted in the collapse of many internet firms.
This has led some to question the very importance of the net.
However, the increasingly common dismissal of the Internet needs to be reconsidered.

As I grew older, and chose my own reading, I rushed to comic papers and penny dreadfuls.
Some good people, when they saw me reading these in the train on my way to school, would shake their heads, and say they wondered my parents allowed it.
But my father, a man of great sympathy and good sense, took a wise and tolerant view.
He argued, if I had any sense, I should grow out of this type of reading: if I had not, it did not matter what I read, as I should be a fool anyway.
Besides, he argued, if he forbade me to read these things I should want to read them all the more, because they would have the charm of being illegal.
He was proved right on that point.

Confucius thought if people were taught to behave correctly, it would help to end China's troubles.
He said there were Five Relationships that were most important―ruler and ruled, father and son, husband and wife, older brother and younger brother, and friend and friend.
He believed each person owed respect to those above him or her.
For instance, sons owed respect and honor to their fathers.

The women planted another staple, squash, about the first of June, and
harvested it near the time of the green corn harvest. After they picked
it, they sliced it, dried it, and strung the slices before they stored
them. Once again, they saved the seed from the best of the year's crop.
The Mandans also grew sunflowers and tobacco ; the latter was the
particular task of the older men.

The project was begun in 1973, but mammograms were largely restricted to
older women because some experts feared the X-ray exams themselves might
induce breast cancer years later. The reports author, University of
Kansas epidemio- logist Dr. Larry H. Baker, said that the radiation dose
has now been greatly reduced, making the technique safer. He and his
collaborators are studying whether mammographic detection of cancer
actually influences survival among the younger women. It has been shown
to do so among women over 50, and annual mammograms are now recommended
for all women in this age group.
Larry H. Baker

They are called organic because they have spread in different directions with no precise plan except to provide space for the growing population.

I think that your company's advertisement for basketball shoes is effective.
The picture was very amusing.
I think that it would have good stopping power.
But since teenagers are in the biggest market for basketball shoes, it would be better to have a younger person in the picture.
The woman in the picture is about thirty.
Teenagers might think that these shoes are meant for older people.

Alice: What's your life like now?
Alec:
Hillary: In my early days, I did a lot of climbing.
Hillary:
It was an active adventurer stage.
As I got older, however, now I'm more involved in organizing, raising funds and leading expeditions.
Alice: Have you had any failures?
Alec:
Hillary: Probably no, it may sound arrogant, but I can't remember having all that many failures in major things that I set out to do.
I think, on the whole, I have been able to carry through the majority of my projects to some successful conclusion.

The incidence of hearing problems is rising among people middle-aged and older.
In Asia, the United Nations estimates, more than 100 million people suffer from some sort of adult-onset hearing impairment.

But you've been with older men before?
Yes.
Then you know they hurt you,

and after they hurt you,
they discard you.
You can't hurt me.

I could always make you laugh.
How did we lose touch?

You ran for Congress. I moved to Colorado.
Thirty years goes by.
I got children older than we were back then.

Are you going to get me one of those for my birthday?
Maybe when you're older.
Like forty.
- Momm-y! - What-y?
- That's not fair. - I know it's not.
Life isn't fair.

So
그래서
who's your phantom driver?
Possibly a cop from Philly.
Or a nurse from Omaha.
But don't forget the mail carrier from Nashville.
Man, it's a rental. Some of those prints are probably older than you are.

- Well, this is going nowhere. - You giving up?
No, no, no.
We're still on.
I may be stalled, but I'm not out.
You wanna take it to three?
You wanna take it to three?

Lately you've been the only thing keeping me going.
It's just we can't do it at my house anymore.
So, then, where do you want to do it?
Well, what time does your mom get back from soccer practice?
Mrs. Solis.
Better hurry. We don't have a lot of time.

Okay, I'll tell her. Bye.

The search for power begins when we're quite young.
As children, we're taught that the power of good
triumphs over the power of evil.
But as we get older,
we realize that nothing is ever that simple.
Traces of evil
always remain.

Hey, come here.
