Another military scandal has been uncovered in which a healthy young man was
exempted from compulsory military service after his parents paid a large
amount of money.
멀쩡한 사람을 환자로 판정해 제대하게 해주고 거액을 받은 병무 비리가 또
적발됐다.

The Ministry of National Defense recently investigated 8 of the 18 national
military hospitals, and unearthed 198 illegal exemptions. Healthy recruits were
allowed to leave the service because of bogus illnesses.
국방부가 의병전역 판정권이 있는 전국 18개 군 (軍) 병원 중 8개 병원을
특별감사한 결과 질병에 걸린 것으로 조작, 전역한 의혹이 드러난 사병 1백98명을
적발한 것이다.

The 198 men granted exemption did not even attain one year of their required
service in the military. According to the law no soldier shall be granted a
military exemption for health reasons unless he has been receiving treatment for
at least one year. Thus, the exemptions were illegal in the first place regardless
if the claims of health problems were true or not.
특히 적발된 1백98명은 모두 국방부 신검규칙에 명시된 '입대후 1년 이상 치료

To pass the civil service examinations in ancient China was no easy
matter. Preparation took years, since candidates were required to know
thousands of logographs merely to read the classics. Furthermore, they
had to memorize whole texts. On the examinations, they wrote essays about

evaluated according to the criteria of purity, truthfulness, elegance,
and propriety. These criteria, however, so vague that candidates had
