clear는 막연한 것·불분명한 것이 없는 것을 말한다.

transparent는 대단히 clear하고 대단히 얇아서 그것을 통해 저쪽 물건을 쉽게 볼 수 있는 것을 말한다. 쉽게 광선을 통과시키는 것으로, 대개의 경우 translucent, pellucid, diaphanous의 대신으로 쓰일 수 있다.
Clear water is transparent.
반의어는 obscuring이다.
translucent는 광선이 통하기는 하나 분산되어 저쪽의 물건이 똑똑하게 보이지 않는 것을 가리킨다.
