strike는 또한 흔히 어떤 일정한 점을 조심스럽게 겨냥하고, 그 목적을 이루는 데 필요한 힘으로 그것을 건드리는 동작으로서, 자국·소리 따위를 내는 것을 암시한다.

한편 이 말은 여기에 나온 말뿐 아니라, pelt(팔매질로 때리다), buffet(손·주먹으로 때리다) 따위의 연거푸 때리는 꼴, rap(톡톡 때리다), whack(찰싹·홱 갈기다), bang(탕 치다) 따위의 소리내어 때리는 모양을 나타내는 말 대신으로 쓰일 수 있다.
hit는 보통 strike보다 구어적인 말이며, 대개의 경우 서로 바뀌어 쓰일 수 있다.
He struck[hit] the boy.
그러나 정확한 용법에서는 타격의 충격과 목표에 도달하는 것을 강조하는 경우에 이 말이 즐겨 쓰인다. 또한 대개의 일격을 가하는 것을 뜻한다.
The archer hit the target./ He hit the boy full in the face./ hit nail upon the head
또한 hit는 탄환 따위의 날아가는 무기·자동차 등과 확대된 용법에서는 정신·감정에 영향을 주는 충격에도 쓰인다.
No one was hit by the bullets from his revolver./ a driver who hits and runs/ The disaster to Tom and Mrs. Tom hit him hard.
smite는 고문체·시적·수사적인 말이나 글자대로의 뜻, 비유적 뜻에서 strike, hit의 대신으로 쓰일 수 있고, 때릴 때에 쓰인 힘을 강조한다.

slap은 손을 펴서 때리는 것을 말한다.
slap one in the face
swat(찰싹때리다)는 때리는 것과 눌러 으깨는 것이 포함된 말이다.
swat flies
clout는 구어적 내지 방언적인 말로, 몸이나 머리를 한 번 때리거나 연거푸 때리는 것을 말한다.
