hit는 「단번」의 타격을 뜻하나, beat는 계속(연속)적인 타격을 암시하는 이외에도 「타격을 가하다; 타격을 가해서 상처를 입히다」는 뜻으로 쓰이는 경우, hit와 달리 human noun이 주어, 목적어가 된다.
He hit the ball with a bat./ The men beat him unmercifully.
strike는 「(상당한 힘을 가하여) 치다, 때리다」는 뜻으로, 「타격」과 관련해서 가장 일반적으로 쓰이는 말이고 hit보다 감정적 의미를 강하게 반영한다.
He struck his enemy on the mouth.
strike와 혼동되기 쉬운 낱말에 stroke가 있는데, stroke는 「쓰다듬다」란 뜻이다.
She stroked the cat.
knock에는 「타격을 가하고 동시에 소리를 내게 하다」는 뜻과 「타격을 가하여 상대방을 쓰러뜨리다」는 뜻이 있다.
