Probably the most important thing about Chusok today is its very Koreanness. At a time when the people of this country are deeply concerned to discover and affirm their true national identity, events with a long history in the culture of Korea a special importance.

(ANS) Of course it is important (or it is of course important) to take care of one's health, but it is not wise to be too much afraid of getting ill.

→ ~와 거리가 멀다: know nothing about ~; be a complete stranger
It may [or can] safely be said that ~; We can safely say that ~
→ 그저 시간 죽이기: a mere means of killing time; only for an idle hour
(ANS 1) It may safely be said that those who assume that books are to be read by borrowing know nothing about the true joy of reading. These people think of reading as a mere means of killing time.
(ANS 2) It is not too much to say that a man who takes it for granted that reading books is borrowing them of others does not know anything about the true joy from reading. Such a man thinks reading is nothing but a mere means of killing time.

→ 아무렇지도 않게: without hesitation; do not hesitate to ~
(ANS 1) It is hard to understand that the Korean, who have always enjoyed the beauties of nature for centuries, should destroy nature without hesitation of the pretext of (land) development.
(ANS 2) We find it hard to understand that the Korean people, who have loved nature over the centuries, should not hesitate to destroy nature in the

ex) Such synopses have little value for the student, because the mere events of the action are not the most important part of the plays.

[比較] range, reach, scope, compass, gamut
There was no human being within my range of vision./ He did not fire until they were within range of his rifle.
beyond the reach of my understanding/ Anything like sustained reasoning was beyond his reach.(꾸준히 이치를 따진다는 따위의 일은 무엇이나 그의 힘에는 부친 일이었다.)
The subject does not lie within the scope of this book.
a type of education that gives a child scope for development of all his powers.
notes of an insect that lie above the compass of the human ear/ He did all within the compass of his power.
Only prose can give the full gamut of modern feeling.

[比較] regardless, irregardless, irrespective
I will leave irregardless of what he says라고 하는 수가 있지만, 무식한 비표준적인 용법이다.
The arrangements must be made regardless of (or irrespective of) his personal feelings in the matter.
I'll do it regardless(하여간 그것을 하겠다)는 regardless of what you think(네가 어떻게 생각하든 상관없이), regardless of that might happen(무슨 일이 일어나든 상관없다)의 뜻이다.
regret, sorry, deplore, lament
Mr. Lee regrets that he will be unable to accept the kind invitation of Mr. Kim for the sixteenth.
I'm sorry I made you cry.
He deplored the conduct of compatriots in European cities.
He paused to lament the brave men who were not there to hear him speak.
I lament that your conduct has made it necessary for me to speak to your father.

[比較] warrant, warranty, guarantee, guaranty
warranted silverware/ I warrant he's telling the truth
The watch is guaranteed for a year.
This does not warrant such expenditures.

[比較] what ever, whatever
What ever can it mean?(대체 무슨 말이냐?), What ever shall we do?(대체 어떻게 해야 할까?)
(b) 관계사: whatever는 복합관계사 what의 강조형으로, all that, any(thing) that(~인 것은 모두, ~인 것은 무엇이나)를 의미한다.
Eat whatever you like./ Whatever is left over is yours.
Whatever request you make will be granted.(네가 요구하는 것은 무엇이든 들어주겠다.)
형용사로 쓰이는 경우 더 한층 강조하기 위해 any, no 따위로 수식된 명사 다음에 자리를 잡아, for any reason whatever(여하한 이유로든지)처럼 할 수 있다. for whatever reason보다 뜻이 강하다.
I have no plans whatever.
Whatever happens, we'll meet here tonight./ Whatever man told you that, it is not true.

A : I heard you're not getting along too well with your boss.
B : Because he always makes my life miserable, picking on me for the slightest thing.

A : It's 12 o'clock already? I have lost track of the time talking with you.
B : Do you have time for a cup of coffee?

A : Nine hundred dollars for that pile of junk? Not on your life.

I was taken for a ride.
* take for a ride는 `차를 탄'이란 뜻이 아니라 `속은'이란
I was taken. 또는 I got taken. I was had.
ex) It`s not easy to buy a used car without being taken for a ride.

You will pay for it!
* You won't get away with this!
'너 나중에 두고 보자'란 뜻이다. won't는 will not의 준말인데
그리고 I'll get even.
된다. get even은 '똑같이 된다.'
Let's wait and see. 또는
It remains to be seen

Up in the air
It's up in the air whether I'll get a promotion or not.
또한 up in the air은 기쁨 또는 노여움으로 '흥분되어 있다.'
What are you going to do this weekend?
It's up for grabs.
up for grabs는 어떤 자리가 '비었다(open)' 는 뜻도 되고,
The manager's position is up for grabs.
Twenty-four Senate seats are up for grabs in this election.
It's a toss-up.

Don't take it out on me!
Give him a lots room.
Be careful not to get on his nerves.
He got chewed out by his boss.
Don't chew me out for notjing.

Let's meet halfway.
Let's go for a golden mean.
또는 Let's go for the happy medium.
우리말과 똑같은 표현은 not yield an inch이다.
ex) I'll not compromise or make any concessions.

We're not out of the woods yet
I think the Korea economy is over the hump라고
woods란 말이 나온 김에 not see the woods for the trees란 말도
