[比較] suspect, surmise, suppose, suspicion
They suspected him of cheating at cards, but there was nothing to justify an open accusation./ He suspected that there was sabotage in connection with the fire.
I surmised that you were his son from your striking resemblance to him. suspect는 surmise의 뜻을 나타낼 수도 있지만, 나쁜 뜻을 나타내려고 하지 않는 경우에는, 후자가 모호하지 않으므로 그것을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
Do you suppose that she wished to remain unmarried?/ The roads were no better than the old had supposed./ All right, suppose we do give him the money? What will happen then?
I suspicioned he wasn't a real doctor from the very beginning.

He's better than nothing.
A : Did you have a good time with Jeff?

A : Why? What's wrong?
B : He's always late.
A : But he's better than nothing.
-
A : I couldn't contact you on your handphone.
B : That's always the case.
A : But it's better than nothing.

In fact, I used to say to my friends, "I have no arms and legs, but there's a lot of stuff I can do better than you."

Dogs, like humans, need fresh water, fresh food and something to think about.

Do you want your neighbors lying awake all night thinking of creative ways to kill you and/or your dog?
If you are not willing to invest the time and energy to train your dog so it can be part of your family, please don't get one.
There is nothing so heartwarming as the love and loyalty of a dog, but it is better for the animal to be destroyed than to be left alone, neglected, bewildered and confused, brimming with love but with no one to accept it.

Eisenhower's major virtue, which appeared less important in 1962 than it does
now, was a sense of proportion; he had an instinctive knowledge of what could be
done and, more important, what could not be done. As far back as 1951, for example,
when the French were fighting in Viet Nam, he forsaw nothing but swamps. "I'm
convinced that no military victory is possible in that kind of theater," he noted. In
1955 members of his Cabinet predicted imminent war with Red China in the Formosa
Strait. Ike knew better: "I have so often been through these periods of strain
that I have become accustomed to the fact that most of the calamities that we
anticipate really never occur."
* a sense of proportion:

Recently I bought a new car radio from a dealer who recommended it highly.
It proved no better than the one it replaced. I was about to charge into
his store and demand my money back, but it occurred to me to put myself
in his place. Doing this I saw how offended he'd be at having his judgment
questioned. So I took a different tact and appealed to his sense of
self-respect. He exchanged the radio for a much better one, without
charging me the difference in cost. As my grandmother used to say,
"You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar."

My mother loved me no less ardently than my father, but she was of a
quicker temper, and less clever at winning affection.
She was comely when I first remembered her, she was also accomplished.
Had I not known my father, I love her better than anyone in the world,
but affection goes by comparison; indeed in after-life I remember my
mother's telling me, with many tears, how jealous she had often been
of the love I bore him. She would say how mean she had thought it of
him to entrust all scoldings to her, so that he might have more than
his due share of my affection.

You have no idea what this will do to you.
Isn't 5 good years better than 10 bad ones?
Meredith, what the hell are you doing?
She needs to understand.
I do understand.

You damned well better be ready, Taylor.
I wouldn't be here if I wasn't.
Do you really, seriously want to know why I'm leaving?! Seriously?
How about when you started insisting that I quit my job,
right when I started to make more money than you?
That should have been the last straw.
No, the last straw should have been when I found out that those mysterious phone calls
that you've been getting that you kept denying were from other women --
were really coming from your mother!

I was gonna ask you a favor, you know?
I thought since, you know,
maybe you're better with people than I am,
I thought maybe you could... no.
Uh, you haven't even heard... no, no.
You're like a broken record. God.
You're only ever nice
or friendly or anything when it's convenient for you.
So no to your favor. No to you. No.

- And, Mr. McAdoo-- - McAvoy.
- I beg your pardon? - Doesn't matter.
Why don't we just build a damn wall?
The Chinese built one and you can see it from space.
- Are the Chinese better than us? - No.
Although there's an old saying-- show me a 15-foot wall
and I'll show you a 16-foot ladder.
Then let's just build a 17-foot wall.
- Hell, build it 18 feet. - Yes. Yep.

There are no outstanding problems.
하나는 better than others, easily seen, 또
There are no outstanding problems.
=There are no problems that have to be solved.
Dialogue
CONCLUSION OF A CONTRACT
Mr. Lee: I think we've finally reached the stage where we can
conclude a business agreement.
Mr. West: Right. There are no outstanding problems as far as
I can see.
Mr. Lee: All that remains is to sign the document.
Mr. West: Yes. I don't think any important items have been
left out.
Mr. Lee: I agree, but we can change minor details later, if
both parties agree to it.
Mr. West: Right. Now when do we sign it?
Mr. Lee: I'm sure you want to do it as soon as possible. But
we need a little ceremony, and my boss wants to attend the
signing. So shall we make it 10 tomorrow morning?
Mr. West: Fine. I know tomorrow is a lucky day according to
the old calendar.
Thank you for your support.
Thank for your consideration.

Considering that the burden of holding taxes is likely to increase significantly next year, it is better to enjoy the benefits of excluding heavy transfer taxes that can be received when transferring homes owned for more than 10 years by selling them no later than the 30th of next month.

Considering the proverb for investors saying, "There is no better opportunity than a plunge," the situation that futures prices had dipped into negative territory seemed like an opportunity.

◆ prefer, would rather
I prefer listening to music to watching TV.
I'd rather listen to music than watch TV. 'd rather
그리고, 만일 특정한 선택에 대해 말할 땐, would rather은 to 부정사를 수반한 would prefer to를 쓸 수 있어요.
I'd / you'd / he'd / she'd / we'd / they'd rather?
Would you like to go out for dinner tonight? ~ No, I think I'd rather eat at home / I'd prefer to eat at home.
Would you rather drink beer or wine with the curry ~ I'd rather drink beer. What about you?
They'd rather have the strawberries by themselves, but I'd prefer to have them with cream.
여러분들은 would rather이 to 부정사를 수반하지 않는 반면에 prefer requires to + infinitive로 to 부정사가 수반된다는 사실을 염두에 두셨으리라 생각됩니다. Would rather (but not would prefer to)의 다른 중요한 용법이 한 가지 더 있습니다.
Shall we go out for dinner tonight? ~ No, I'd rather we ate at home, if you don't mind.
Shall I write to Harry and tell him that we've sold the car? ~ I'd rather you didn't.
My mother would rather we caught the bus, rather than walk home after the party.
Rather than은 instead of의 뜻으로 쓰일 수 있습니다.
Rather than lose precious sleep discussing it now, I think we should go to bed and talk about it in the morning.
My mother would prefer us to email each other once a week, rather than spend half an hour on the phone every night.
My mother would rather we emailed each other once a week instead of spending half an hour on the phone every night. In fact, she insists on it. So we'd better do that, I suppose.

기구, 행동으로서 실제로는 영향을 미치지 않는다. any dummy medical treatment;
originally, a medicinal preparation having no specific pharmacological activity against the
patient's illness or complaint given solely for the psychophysiological effects of the
treatment; more recently, a dummy treatment administered to the control group in a
controlled clinical trial in order that the specific and nonspecific effects of the
experimental treatment can be distinguished - i.e., the experimental treatment must
produce better results than the placebo in order to be considered effective.

Lace : How are the chairs selling?

George: I GOT ONE LEFT. I need four more.
Lace : Wow.
IT'S GOING A LOT BETTER THAN I EXPECTED.
George: Yeah, well, you know, people sit down lot around here.
Lace : Yeah.
George: (도와주면서) Here, I can get these.
Lace : No, I got it.
George: Well... I'll help you.
Hey, Lace. There's, there's party tonight at the Elkhorn Bar.
* elkhorn : 고라니 뿔
Lace : Why do they call it that?
