apt(자칫～하기 쉬운)와 likely(～함직한)는 to-부정사를 거느리는 경우 가까운 동의어가 된다.
likely는 어떤 모욕적인 말에 대해서 재치 있고 아주 날카로운 대답을 한 경우 다음처럼 말할 수 있다.
It was an apt answer; just the sort of thing that so-and-so would be likely to say.(경우에 꼭 맞는 대답이었다. 바로 아무개가 말함직한 대답이었다.)
He is apt to stammer when he is excited.(그는 흥분하면 말을 더듬기를 잘한다.)/ Cast iron is apt to break.(무쇠는 부러지기 쉽다.)
likely는 단순히 가능성을 나타내지만, 어떤 특수한 형편이나 환경에 쓰인다. 예를 들면, 11월 말경의 시카고의 날씨가 눈이 내릴 낌새를 보이는 경우, It is likely to snow today.라고 할 수 있다. 한편 apt는 Snow is apt to fall in Chicago in late November.처럼 일반적인 경향을 나타낸다.
또한 apt가 「잘하는, 재주가 있는」을 의미하는 경우에는 to-부정사를 거느리지 않고 at+동사의 -ing형을 취해서 He is apt at painting.처럼 쓰이기도 한다.
liable(자칫 ～하기 쉬운)은 부담이 될 일이거나 불리한 일을 당하기 쉬운 것을 나타낸다. liable과 apt는 뜻이 가깝기 때문에 서로 바뀌어 쓰이는 수가 있지만, liable은 주어에 대해서 부담 또는 불리함을 줄 가능성이 있는 경우에 사용되는 것이 원칙이다. We are liable to be overheard.(남이 우리의 말을 엿듣기 쉽다.)는 남이 엿듣는 것이 우리에게 불리한 것임을 표시한다.

prone(～하기 쉬운)은 거의 피할 수 없는 성질이나 성벽을 암시하며 반드시 to-부정사를 취하지 않는다.

till, until이 이끄는 절은 그때가지 한 동작이나 상태가 계속되는 것을 나타낸다. 따라서 last, remain, wait 따위 계속을 의미하는 동사와 흔히 어울려 쓰인다. 주절의 동사는 어떤 시제든지 취할 수 있다. 미래의 일에 관해서 말할 때, 종속절의 동사는 현재 또는 현재완료를 취해서 ‘비가 그칠 때까지 기다려라’는 Wait till the rain stops 혹은, Wait till the rain has stopped라고도 할 수 있다. 따라서 과거의 일에 관해서 말할 때에는 종속절의 동사는 과거 또는 과거 완료 시제를 취해서, ‘그는 비가 그칠 때까지 기다렸다’는 He waited till the rain stopped 또는 He waited till the rain had stopped라고 할 수 있다. till(또는 until)은 He did not learn of it till the next day(다음 날에 가서야 그 일을 알았다)에서처럼 부정적 구문에 쓰이기도 한다. 이 구문에서 계속되는 것은 부정의 상태 즉, he did not learn이다. 그러나 It was not long till we realized(오래지 않아 우리는 깨달았다) 같은 글은 이렇게 설명할 수 없다. 여기서 주절 it was not long은 계속하는 것으로 생각되는 문장을 만들지 못한다. 이 경우 영국에서는 till(또는 until)의 그릇된 용법으로 치지만, 미국에서는 확대된 용법으로 인정하고 있다. 이 점에 관해서 She can't go till she finishes her work와 Until injustice is ended, peace will never be realized 같은 글에서는 till, until의 용법은 표준적이지만 다음과 같은 구문에서 till, until의 사용은 가끔 나타나는 수는 있어도 격식 차리는 글에서는 before, when을 쓰는 것이 좋다.

out with its own gloomy picture for the economy next year.

The chronic economic problem of high costs and low efficiency was
seen remaining unsolved next year. The export-based economy is not
doing enough to increase the competitiveness except for a few

기미가 보이지 않는다. 수출 주도 경제이면서, 전자나 자동차등 몇몇 분야를

Already many have linked the first revision of the inheritance tax law
in 46 years to the presidential election next year. Some speculate that
it is a gift to the rich in return for the loss they suffered from the
real-name financial transaction system implemented by the Kim
Young-sam administration.
46년만에 처음으로 개정되는 상속세 개정에는 내년도 대통령 선거를 앞두

The court is expected to hand down a verdict on the charges of
military mutiny, treason and corruption on Aug. 19, but it is obvious
that the defendants will bring the case to the appellate court for
review. Therefore, the trial will be extended probably to next spring,
when the Supreme Court will pass a final judgment.

According to the Bank of Korea, the economy grew 6.7 percent in
terms of gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter of this
year, the lowest quarterly growth in three years. This 6.7 percent figure
compares with the 7.9 percent in the first quarter and falls short of the
government projection of 7 percent. The economy, which started to slow
down from the final quarter of last year, is expected to continue to move
down a slippery slope until the first half of next year.
한국은행에 따르면, 우리 경제는 금년도 2/4분기에 6.7%의 GDP성장을 기
록하여, 3년만에 최저치를 나타내었다고 한다. 이 6.7%의 숫자는 1/4분기의
7.9%와 비교될 뿐 아니라 정부가 계획했던 7%보다도 부족한 것이다. 작년
4/4분기부터 하락하기 시작한 경제는 내년도 전반기까지 내리막길을 계속할
것으로 예상되고 있다.

☞ DATE ☜
date 는 원래 날짜라는 의미이다. 그것이 사람을 만나기 위└ 약속
이라는 말이되고,애인끼리 만나서 즐거운 한때를 지낸다는 말로 쓰
이게 되었다. date 에는 또한 [데이트하는 상대]라는 뜻도있다.
Who was your date ? 라고하면 [데이트 상대는 누구였느냐 ?]의 뜻
이다. [토요일 밤 데이트하겠니 ?]라고 말하고 싶으면 Would you
like to go out on a date next Saturday evening ?,[그녀와 댄스
데이트를 하기로 했다]고 말하고 싶으Р I made a date for a
dance with her.라고 말한다. 댄스 파티는 영어로 dance party 라
고 하지 않으며 dance 또는 dancing party 라고 한다. [댄스 파티
에 가자]는 Let's go to a dance.로 충분하다.

수첩을 영어로는 appointment book 또는 diary 라고한다.다른 사람
이 예정을 물을 때 [어디 봅시다] [확인해 보겠습니다]라고 할 때
는 Let me check it with my appointment book. 라고 하면 된다.
[다음 주는 모두 예정되어 있습니다] 라고 할 때는 [ I'm afraid
I'm fully booked next week.] 이다. 사람을 만나거나 무슨 부탁
을 할 때에는 사전에 반드시 약속을 해야 안다. 이러한 약속을
appointment 라고 하며 [약속하다]는 make an appointment 라고 한
다. 약속을 하고 면해갔을 때는 반드시 [My mame is -. I have an
appointment to see - at ... 라고 비서나 접수계에 말해야 한다는
것을 알아두자. 이런경우 처럼 면회의 약속은 promise가 아니다.

》 펜팔 글 중에 " Next year we will go year round. Do you go
to school year round ? "라고 있던대 'year round'가 의미하는
것은 무엇인지요 ?
→ 이는 "1년 내내"의 뜻입니다. ( all the year round )

'cozy up'의 의미는?
동사로서, "다가붙다, 끌어안다"의 뜻.
ex) She and her boyfriend cozied up next to the fire.
그녀와 그녀의 애인은 불 가까이에서 서로 붙어 앉았다.

날씨가 춥네. 우리 서로 붙어 앉는게 어떨까?
