Under the plan, aspiring students will be offered a wide variety of
choices as numerous new institutions are expected to spring up. In
coming years, colleges will fiercely compete to attract students, in
marked contrast to the current situation, where student struggles with
student to enter the limited number of schools.

Years ago, the United States Mint asked Anthony if he would try to design a new silver dollar.
Anthony said yes.
It was a great honor for him to be asked to do such a thing.
Anthony decided he would put Miss Liberty on one side of the coin.
His young wife, Teresa, was the model for Miss Liberty.
When Anthony's design was accepted, Teresa's face began appearing on silver dollars.
Anthony

The jobs that most companies are doing with information today would have been impossible several years ago.
At that time, getting rich information was very expensive,
and the tools for analyzing it weren't even available until the early 1990s.
But now the tools of the digital age give us a way to easily get, share, and act on information in new ways.

This discovery changed human history.
People were able to travel faster and farther with horses.
They were able to leave their own land.
Many people went to distant lands, met new people, and saw new places.
They taught other people how to use horses.
Then, about 3,500 years ago, people in Mesopotamia began to use horses to help them win wars against their enemies.
They drove chariots, or carts, pulled by two or more horses.
It was impossible for an enemy on foot to fight against a soldier in a chariot.
As a result, armies with horses and chariots were very powerful.

During his years as mayor of New York City, Guardia sometimes presided as judge in a night court.
In one case, a man was found guilty of stealing a loaf of bread.
He claimed that he had committed that theft to feed his starving family.
“The law is the law,” La Guardia declared.
“I must therefore fine you $10.”
When the man sadly confessed that he had no money, the judge took $10 out of his wallet and paid the fine.
He also asked each person in the courtroom to contribute 50 cents to help the man.
There and then, they accepted his request.
Finally, the law-breaker was set free and even blessed with an undeserved gift.

In recent years, we've been dreaming very different dreams.
The stuff of these dreams is fantasy―swords and wizards, knights and ladies.
The business of fantasy has become a multibillion-dollar reality, and science fiction is starting to feel old-fashioned.
Our fascination with science fiction reflected a deep faith that technology would lead us to a cyber utopia, with robot servants serving food.
But in fact, a dark, pessimistic attitude toward technology and the future is attracting more and more people.
And the evidence is the world's new concern with a nostalgic, magical vision of the past: swords, not lasers; magic, not electricity; villages, not cities; the past, not the future.

All desert plants have tricks for dealing with great heat and long periods of dryness, or drought.
Many small desert plants appear on the landscape only when heavy rains fall.
These plants “wait out” periods of drought underground.
They exist for months or even years as seeds buried in the soil.
When rains come, these seeds spring to life.
The young plants quickly grow into adult plants and, in turn, throw out a new bunch of seeds before they die.
All this happens within a few weeks.

I've been living in New York for 43 years.

"We say that the universe is expanding."
"What makes it do that?"
"Most astronomers agree that the expanding universe can only have one explanation: Once upon a time, about 15 billion years ago, all substance in the universe was assembled in a relatively small area.
The substance was so dense that gravity made it terrifically hot.
Finally it got so hot and so tightly packed that it exploded.
We call this explosion the Big Bang."
"Just the thought of it makes me shudder."
"The Big Bang caused all the substance in the universe to be expelled in all directions, and as it gradually cooled, it formed stars and galaxies and moons and planets..."
"But I thought you said the universe was still expanding?"
"Yes I did, and it's expanding precisely because of this explosion billions of years ago.
The universe has no timeless geography.
The universe is a happening.
The universe is an explosion.
Galaxies continue to fly through the universe away from each other at colossal speeds."
"Will they go on doing that for ever?"
"That's one possibility.
But there is another.
You may recall that Alberto told Sophie about the two forces that cause the planets to remain in constant orbit round the sun?"
"Weren't they gravity and inertia?
"Right, and the same thing applies to the galaxies.
Because even though the universe continues to expand, the force of gravity is working the other way.
And one day, in a couple of billion years, gravity will perhaps cause the heavenly bodies to be packed together again as the force of the huge explosion begins to weaken.
Then we would get a reverse explosion, a so-called implosion.
But the distances are so great that it will happen like a movie that is run in slow motion.
You might compare it with what happens when you release the air from a balloon."
"Will all the galaxies be drawn together in a tight nucleus again?"
"Yes, you've got it.
But what will happen then?"
"There would be another Big Bang and the universe would start expanding again.
Because the same natural laws are in operation.
And so new stars and galaxies will form."

This week he will announce, - to the surprise of no one, that he hopes to

The next 25 years in science will see the elimination of infectious disease as

Prof. John Maxwell O'Brien of Queens College in New York has a theory that is
outraging the hero's legion of supporters.
Alexander lived his last years, O'Brien contends, with "the classic symptoms
of acute alcoholism."

The new Prime Minister decided early on to retain many of his predecessor's
domestic programs, such as literacy lessons and unemployment relief, and, as a
consequence, found himself committed to programs that will cost at least $2.5 billion
over the next three years. To foot the bill and to whittle down Jamaica's balance
of payments deficit ($700 million last year), the Prime Minister, a Harvard-educated
sociologist before he turned to politics, put together a complicated financial
package.

Another approach will be to scrap certain government regulations. Today, for
example, firms that produce new drugs or pesticides ofter must (struggle) for as
long as 13 years (through) a regulatory labyrinth before getting a product on the
market.

Our young daughter had adopted a stray cat. To my distress, he began to
use the back of our new sofa as a scratching post. "Don't worry," my
husband reassured me. "I'll have him trained in no time."
I watched for several days as my husband patiently "trained" our new pet.
Whenever the cat scratched, my husband deposited him outdoors to teach
him a lessen.
The cat learned quickly. For the next 16 years, whenever he wanted to go
outside, he scratched the back of the sofa.

Farming began about 12,000 years ago and it has developed very quickly in
the last 300 years. There are no signs that the speed of development will
slow down. Agriculture will continue to develop in three main ways.
First, farming will become even more efficient by using new types of
technology. Many processes will be controlled by computers. Second, new
ways of growing, storing and selling crops will be developed which can be
used by poor people as well as rich people. Third, agricultural products
will be used in many ways.

My passion for books continued throughout my life. It had to meet a big
challenge when, at the age of twenty-five, I moved to New York. Because I
had almost no money. I was forced to leave all my books in Brazil.
Besides, I didn't know enough English to read. For some years I had to
live without books, my lovers. But my love for books was so strong that I
overcame even this obstacle. I learned to read in English and was finally
able to enjoy my favorite authors again.

[ Clues to Dinosaurs' Demise Sought ]
The rock and dust kicked up by an asteroid impact 65 million years ago were not enough to kill the dinosaurs, according to researchers―but the debris may have sparked a deadly global chemical reaction in the atmosphere.
New studies show the Chicxulub impact crater on the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula is smaller than once thought, making dinosaur extinction difficult to explain completely.
Researchers presented those findings Sunday at the American Geophysical Union's fall meeting.
"If you rely on little pieces of debris actually clobbering organisms, then you're in trouble," said Virgil "Buck" Sharpton of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.

Since 1980, research on the dinosaurs' disappearance has focused on the 125-mile crater and the 10-mile-wide asteroid believed to have created it.
Dust from the impact was thought to have blocked out sunlight for years.
Now, however, drilling around the Yucatan crater indicates the presence of carbonates and sulfate rocks.
The new theory is that these were vaporized by the asteroid impact, a process that would have released chemicals that produce sulfur and the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.
The sulfur compounds would be especially toxic, Sharpton said.
"They do nasty things.
They form little globules that persist in the atmosphere for some considerable amount of time―decades to a hundred years," he said.
"They also mix with water in the atmosphere and produce sulfuric acid."

They were forced into it by the fact that technology has advanced more rapidly in the past 50 years than in the previous 5,000.
Men in business, government, education and science itself realize that they must look at least two decades ahead just to keep abreast, and must learn to survive under totally different conditions.

Now, however, there's new energy in the wind.
Engineers have used advanced technology to make wind turbines that are far more efficient and cost effective than those of yesteryear.
Today's models are capable of meeting 10% of America's energy demand, and within 30 years, newer versions could provide for a quarter of the nation's power needs.
Such figures have re-energized the manufacturers of wind-power equipment and attracted the interest of foreign competitors.
Utilities are conducting wind surveys and starting pilot projects.
And a new breed of wildcatter is scurrying to buy up wind rights - licenses to erect what may be the oil wells of tomorrow.

The arsenal of treatment options has expanded considerably in recent years.
Antivirals given to pregnant mothers have proved effective in preventing transmission to newborns, and a new, shorter treatment shows promise for use in developing nations.

As the global market for renewable energy expands, however, it is European and Japanese companies - not American ones - that are winning most of the new business.
As recently as 1996, manufacturers in the U.S. accounted for more than 40% of the world's photovoltaic shipments.

Danish firms are supplying 60% of the wind turbines being installed in the fast-growing U.S. market, which this year alone will nearly double the total installed base of wind power.

Recently, however, paleontologists have been taking a closer look at the
sediments below this Silurian-Devonian geological boundary. It turns out
that some fossils can be extracted from these sediments by putting the
rocks in an acid bath. The technique has uncovered new evidence from
sediments that were deposited near the shores of the ancient oceans ―
plant microfossils and microscopic pieces of small animals. In many
instances the specimens are less than one-tenth of a millimeter in
diameter. Although they were entombed in the rocks for hundreds of
millions of years, many of the fossils consist of the organic remains of
the organism.

Midway through its first century as a nation, the United States's
population had increased roughly five times, and eleven new states had
been added to the original thirteen. During these years the demand for
portraits grew and grew eventually to be satisfied by the camera. In
1839 the daguerreotype was introduced to America, ushering in the age of
photography, and within a generation the new invention put an end to the
popularity of painted portraits. Once again an original portrait became
a luxury, commissioned by the wealthy and executed by the professional.

The modern comic strip started out as ammunition in a newspaper war
between giants of the American press in the late nineteenth century. The
first full-color comic strip appeared January 1894 in the New York
World, owned by Joseph Pulitzer. The first regular weekly full-color
comic supplement, similar to today's Sunday funnies, appeared two years
later, in William Randolph Hearst's rival New York paper, the Morning
Journal.

William Randolph Hearst

The most financially rewarding of all the Academy-Institute awards are
the Mildred and Harold Strauss Livings. Harold Strauss, a devoted editor
at Alfred A. Knopf, the New York publishing house, and Mildred Strauss,
his wife, were wealthy and childless. They left the Academy-Institute a
unique bequest : for five consecutive years, two distinguished (and
financially needy) writers would receive enough money so they could
devote themselves entirely to "prose literature"(no plays, no poetry,
and no paying job that might distract). In 1983, the first Strauss
Livings of $35,000 a year went to short-story writer Raymond Carver and
novelist-essayist Cynthia Ozick. By 1988, the fund had grown enough so
that two winners, novelists Diane Johnson and Robert Stone, each got
$50,000 a year for five years.

Robert Stone

The dream of building an x-ray microscope dates to 1895 ; its
development, however, was virtually halted in the 1940's because the
development of the electron microscope was progressing rapidly. During
the 1940's, electron microscopes routinely achieved resolution better
than that possible with a visible-light microscope, while the
performance of x-ray microscopes resisted improvement. In recent years,
however, interest in x-ray microscopes has revived, largely because of
advances such as the development of new sources of x-ray illumination.
As a result, the brightness available today is millions of times that of
x-ray tubes, which, for most of the century, were the only available
sources of soft x-rays.

From an evolutionary standpoint polar bears are quite new. The first
ani- mals that taxonomists recognize as bears go back about 20 million
years to the Miocene epoch. The size of a small dog, those early bears
gradually grew much larger and began living in caves; some were even
bigger than present- day bears. They spread to all the continents except
Australia and Antarctica.

Mary Thompson was a young woman from Cork, Ireland. A man from Spain
asked her to marry him. Mary agreed and set off on a sailing ship headed
for Spain. Before the ship arrived, pirates came aboard. They captured
Mary and brought her to the slave market in Morocco. The Sultan, ruler
of the country, heard of the new woman who was for sale as a slave. When
he saw Mary, he fell in love with her and decided to make her his queen.
She became Empress Mary, and she helped to rule Morocco for thirty
years.
