Probably the most important thing about Chusok today is its very Koreanness. At a time when the people of this country are deeply concerned to discover and affirm their true national identity, events with a long history in the culture of Korea a special importance.

The number of divorced couples with more than 20 years of marriage has
increased sharply over the past few years in line with the rising
economic and social status of Korean women.

전자는 the French Revolution(프랑스 혁명) 당시 revolution에 반대하여
구질서를 지키고자 했던 영국의 progressivism(점진주의), 독일 낭만파의
aristocracy(귀족정치)로의 복고운동과 연관이 있는 modern political thought
(근대 정치사상)의 특정한 조류를 말한다. 오늘날의 historical conservatism은
대체로 socialism(사회주의)을 지향하는 progressive한 사고방식에 대하여
현재의 capitalism(자본주의) 질서를 유지하고 그 속에서 발전을 꾀하는 것을 말한다.
후자는 어느 시대, 어떤 사회에서나 노인이 청년보다 conservative하다는 것을
나타내는 말이다. 일반적으로 conservatism은 전자, 즉 ideology의 의미를 지닌
political thought(정치사상)의 한 조류를 일컫는다.

국내시장의 제1차 거래단계에서 기업 상호간에 거래되는 commodities(상품)의
평균적인 price change(가격변동)를 측정하기 위해 작성되는 지수.
옛 이름인 'wholesale price index(도매물가지수)'에서의 'wholesale(도매)'의
의미는 wholesaler(도매상) 또는 대리점에서의 판매를 의미하는 것이 아니라
대량거래가 이루어지는 생산자 단계의 판매를 의미한다는 뜻이다.
따라서 지수작성에 사용되는 가격은 제1차 거래단계의 가격, 즉 domestic
products(국내생산품)의 경우는 value-added tax(부가가치세)를 제외한
producer sale price(생산자판매가격, 공장도가격)를 원칙으로 하고 있다.
반면에 수입품의 경우는 importer sale price(수입업자 판매가격)를 원칙으로
하고, 이것이 불가능할 경우에는 다음 거래 단계인 대량도매상 또는
중간도매상의 판매가격을 이용한다. 그 대상범위가 광범위해 일반적인
national economy(국민경제) 물가수준의 변동을 측정할 수 있고 이에 따른
commodities의 전반적인 수급동향을 파악할 수 있기 때문에 보통
general objective index(일반목적지수)라고 한다.

The report shows a rapid rise in the number of elderly living alone.
The number of people over 60 living by themselves soared to 492,000, or
77.8 percent of all one-member households, in 1995, up from the 277,000

amount of money marked for welfare programs in the national budget
for the elderly accounted for a meager 0.15 percent this year.
