코스닥(KOSDAQ)은 코스닥증권시장의 약칭이다. 회사이름이기도 하고 시장을 지칭하기도 한다. 코스닥의 원래 이름은 코스닥증권주식회사였다.
영어로는 KOSDAQ이나 이를 분해하기가 어렵다. 끝 두 철자 AQ는 Automated Quotation(자동호가시스템)이나 KOSD는 굳이 푼다면 Korea Securities Dealers가 되며 협회중개시장이 아니라 증권업자중개시장이 된다. 영어가 한국에 와서 고생하는 예이다.
그러나 이제는 고유명사로 그냥 코스닥시장으로 받아들이는 것이 좋겠다. 나스닥(NASDAQ)의 경우도 이제는 어원을 따지지 않는다.
