[比較] stop, cease, pause, quit, discontinue, desist
My watch stopped./ Oh! do stop talking that way!
The war had ceased./ All life has ceased.
The noise stops(or ceases)처럼 할 수 있다. One stops a car에서 cease를 쓰려면, One ceases driving a car처럼 한다.
He paused to tie his shoe.
He quit his job for a better position.
quit에는 stop의 뜻과 cease의 뜻이 있어, He quit working이라고 하면, stopped working(<그 날 하루의 일 따위> 일을 그만두었다)의 뜻도, ceased working(일을 아주 그만 두었다, 은퇴했다)의 뜻도 된다.
discontinue a business (or a friendship, or a correspondence, or a subscription to a journal, or drinking intoxication liquors)/ He has discontinued the practice of law.
desist from further questioning/ He had made two attempts to shave but his hand had been so unsteady that he had been obliged to desist.

ex) "His theory is very intriguing, but in my view, it's a way of dressing up the fact that it's speculation."

Button it.
: a forceful way of telling someone to stop talking.
☞ Zip one's mouth (jeep
Ex) He told me to ZIP MY MOUTH.

Can I drop you somewhere?
Do you need a ride (lift)?
-
Would you give me a ride (lift)? / (Are you) going my way?
How about a ride (lift).
-
Where are you going? / Where are you heading (headed)?

◆ When you happen to pass by, drop in and see us.

Don't get me wrong. '
* Don't misunderstand me.
Don't take it the wrong way로도 쓰인다.
Don't take my word for it.
Take my word for it.
즉 Believe me. Trust me.
You've got my word for it.
cf) You may take him at his word.
He is as good as his word. / He is a man of his word.
He is a man of promise.

Can you come my way?
Shall I come your way or would you come my way?
Going my way?
All things came my way 또는 Everything came my way라고 하면

* come to think of ∼ : ∼를 생각하게 되다.

My baby is trying(starting) to talk.
(1) bubble : If someone bubbles, they talk in a confused or excited way
(2) mumble : If you mumble, something or mumble, you speak very quietly
and indistinctly so that the words are difficult to understand
(3) grumble : If someone grumbles, they complain about something in a
bad-tempered and discontented way

I just think that it's a way through my voice, I have this way of trying to capture people's heart and communicate with them.
* capture one's heart ...

S1 : What shall I do? That report is due today.
S2 : Why don't you ask the teacher to put off the deadline?
S1 : No way. This is not the first time. Did you do your homework?
S2 : Yes. But you haven't got time to copy my report.
S3 : Give it to me. I'll get it done for you.
S1 : Wow! You're a lifesaver.
S3 : Buy me something to eat later.

S1 : The teacher is upset about your paper.
He is disappointed with your work.
S2 : What's wrong with it?
S1 : Let me have a look at it.
Your paper was poorly written.
S2 : Tell me where I made mistakes.
S1 : Spend more time checking your spelling and grammar.
S2 : Thanks. I promise to do my best to write the way you'd like.

T : I'm going to give each of you your report cards for the mid-term examination.
S1 : Nam-su, you look very happy. Are you the top student of the class?
S2 : Not really. But I got a perfect score in history.
S1 : Sounds great. Then who is the top student?
S2 : Chang-ho is. He got straight A's in all his subjects.
S1 : Wow, that's amazing. By the way, what score did you get in math?
S2 : My score is terrible. Math is my worst subject.

S1 : What's that big bandage on your shin for?
S2 : While running down the bleachers at the school playing field, I fell down and scraped my shin badly.
But I didn't take it seriously at that time, so I just cleaned it with rubbing alcohol, and left it that way.
That was a mistake. My scrape turned into a big sore, and now puss is oozing out of it.
It's badly infected. Now the school nurse gave me this big bandage and put me on antibiotics.

S1 : Our music class was very exciting. Beethoven's work is always touching.
S2 : You can say that again. By the way, what's the matter, So-ra? You look so serious.
S3 : I have lost my wallet.
S2 : I'm sorry to hear that. Let's ask our classmates. Has anyone found a wallet?
S4 : I have. Whose wallet is this? I found it in the music room.
S3 : It's mine. Thank you, Seon-hee.

After a few days during which everything seemed to be going my way, I learned to my dismay how mutable Lady Luck can be.

I succumb to temptation whenever it comes my way.

The way in which he asked for a loan was so disarming that almost to my surprise I found myself giving him the money.

I was taking my mother for a drive, and she'd scold me whenever I went over the speed limit.
Unfortunately I dismissed her advice, and a policeman stopped me and issued a ticket.
As my mother and I continued on our way, I complained that the policeman should have let me off with a warning.
"Joan," my mother said, "I gave you the warning. He gave you the ticket."

Your station has lost me and my family as viewers on Thursday evening.
We were so offended by your new situation comedy show “Hold the Plow” that we will avoid your station from now on.
Since the program was about rural life and we come from that background, we eagerly tuned in the show.
But it was a complete failure!
The program portrayed farmers and rural life in a silly way without ever letting viewers know the true life in the country.
Other viewers who know rural life will undoubtedly share my opinion.

The last time I went out for breakfast, I had to choose among ten types of pancakes, six varieties of juice, and four kinds of potatoes.
To my surprise, my wife and children love all this.
They love going into an ice cream shop and being able to choose among seventy-five flavors of ice cream and seventy-five flavors of topping to put on them.
For my part, I increasingly find that I miss simplicity.
Faced with a glass case filled with eighteen types of coffee, I just wish for a nice cup of tea.
I'm afraid I am the only person in the house who feels that way.

The captain of a luxury liner was instructing a new crew member on part of his job.
“Your responsibility, sailor, in case of danger, is to yell ‘Man the lifeboats! Man the lifeboats!'”
The sailor practiced it and soon had it down perfectly.
A few hours later, the boat was hit by an iceberg and began sinking.
The sailor yelled, “Woman the lifeboats! Woman the lifeboats!” The captain was surprised.
“What's going on?” he demanded.
“Listen, captain,” the sailor replied, “you fill your boats the way you want, and I'll fill my boats the way I want!”

The farmer asked whether the student could answer a question he was wondering about.
He asked, “What is it that God is doing up in the sky tonight?”
The student pondered for a long time but confessed that he didn't know the answer.
“Never mind,” said the farmer. “Maybe there is no answer.”
The farmer gave the student a cozy room in which to sleep and a big breakfast the next morning.
“Now,” said the student, “I'll be on my way. Thank you.”

Conversation can be on two levels―the content one and the feeling one.
For example, yesterday my friend Scott came over and told me what Ann had done to him.
I started to tell him why I thought Ann acted that way and Scott got angry and started fighting with me.
After he left, I realized that he didn't really want me to explain why Ann was that way,
but he wanted someone to understand his feelings because no matter why Ann did it, she really hurt him.
I probably should have said something like, “She really made you mad, didn't she?” and waited until the next day to talk about it.

Hours passed.
Everything was still and quiet.
It was a battle of wills between the monkey king and the unknown monster whose existence the former had assumed.
It was the monster who gave way first.
Unable to restrain his greed, he popped up from the center of the lake and said in a loud voice,
“Why don't you drink? I am the guardian of this lake.
I tell you that the water is pure, refreshing, cool, and sweet.
Drink, my friends, drink.”
No, my good fellow,” replied the king, “your wishes will not be fulfilled in the way that you want.”
“What do you mean?” asked the monster.
“You won't be able to catch us.
We will drink the water of the lake and yet not fall into your trap.”
“How will you do that?” shouted the monster, amused at the monkey king's boldness.
“You will see,” replied the monkey king.
The monkeys then plucked long reeds from the marshes and drank the water through the reeds.
Frustrated, the monster disappeared back into the water.
The monkey king's cautious approach kept his troop from falling a prey to the cruel being's plot.

When I was working in the yard, my four-year-old son, Tommy, came running over to me.
He asked me to get his ball out of a hole.
He said that the ball had rolled into the hole while playing soccer in the driveway.
I tried to reach my hand for it but the hole was too deep.
I brought a long stick, but it was not helpful.
I said to my son, “I'm sorry, but there seems to be no way to get it out.”
Then my son said, “Why don't we float it out?”
We filled the hole with water and, to our great relief and delight, the ball floated to the top!

The next morning I found a return note for the message under my pillow.
My mother wrote that she loved me and forgave me.
This became my way of apologizing whenever I talked back or disobeyed.
My mother always left a return note, but she never spoke about our under-the-pillow messages in front of the family.
Not even when we were grown.

If Madeline Powell had her way, she'd eat like vegetarian.
Many nights, dinner would be a simple salad or rib-sticking bowl of porridge.
But Madeline, 39, has her family to consider.
My son is picky with vegetables,” she says regrettably.
“And my husband, Jim, is a meat-and-potatoes guy.”
Guess what's happened since they married 21 years ago?
Between them, Madeline and Jim have gained nearly 50 kilos.
Putting on weight after marriage is a common reality, many studies shows.
But relax.
It's possible to modify even deep-rooted patterns.
Here are strategies for handling some of life's difficult dining experiences.

My son has been mugged twice on his way to high school.
He doesn't want me to buy him good shoes for fear he'll get beaten up or killed for them.

Prayer For Bad Times
Dear God: Help me be a good sport in this game of life.
I don't ask for an easy place in the lineup.
Put me anywhere you need me.
I only ask that I can give you 100 percent of everything I have.
If all the hard drives seem to come my way, I thank you for the compliment.
Help me remember that you never send a player more trouble than he can handle.
-
And, help me, Lord, to accept the bad breaks as part of the game.
May I always play on the square, no matter what the others do.
Help me study the Book so I'll know the rules.

Finally, God, if the natural turn of events goes against me and I'm benched for sickness or old age, help me to accept that as part of the game, too.
Keep me from whimpering that I was framed or that I got a raw deal.
And when I finish the final inning, I ask for no laurels.
All I want is to believe in my heart that I played as well as I could and that didn't let you down.

I will love the sun, for it warms my body.
Yet I will love the rain, for it cleanses my mind.

I will love the light, for it shows me the way.
Yet I will love the darkness, for it shows me the stars.
I will welcome happiness, for it enlarges my heart.
Yet I will endure sadness, for it opens my soul.

But proverbs often contradict one another, as any reader soon discovers.

I can live with that, but I cannot tolerate the way they relieve themselves in every room of the house.
I am scrubbing floors and carpets constantly, and the house still smells terrible.
It's embarrassing to have visitors.

I found it in the middle of the sidewalk on my way home from school one spring morning.
It was a very tiny creature, whose feathers were wet in the rain.
And it was hardly breathing when I picked it up, I fed it raw meat and other treats for several weeks.
Soon, it became strong and started to hop around.
One day, someone left a window open.
When I came home from work, I discovered that it had flown away.

That surprises me.
I guess I really shouldn't base my opinion about him on the way he looks.

After 14 days the phone rang.
My heart dropped to my knees.
It was our daughter, calling from Covenant House, a home for runaways in New Orleans.
She was sorry that she left the way she did.
No, she'd had no idea we would be so upset.
Yes, she'd like to come back home if we would accept her.
I was so thrilled that she was alive I could barely speak.

The consensus in my field is that this whole matter is now emerging into public consciousness.
We humans are realizing how much we manipulate each other and consequently we're reevaluating our motivations.
We're looking for another way to interact.
I think this reevaluation will be part of the new world view.

As the railroad conductor entered our car, my friend discovered he had left his ticket at home.
Trying to joke his way out of the awkward situation, my friend told the conductor, "I'm not a dishonest guy. Look, my face is my ticket."
The conductor didn't miss a beat.
"And my duty," he said, "is to punch every ticket."

It always amazes me the way a real-estate agent's attitude changes when you're
trying to sell instead of buy. I once called in an agent to sell my house.
"It's a big house," I said. "It even has two wings."
"Most turkeys do!" he said.

I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience.
I know of no way of judging the future but by the past.

When I first read the bood, I accepted its ideas only tentatively; but since
then they have become so entrenched in my philosophy that I can no longer
think any other way.

A businessman was dining at a fancy restaurant and, so the story goes, met
Lee Iacocca by the phone booth. "Mr. Iacocca," he exclaimed, "the American
business hero! I've studied your career, and any success I've had comes
from trying to do as well as you. Would you do me a favor? I'm with some
colleagues. Please come by my table, say 'Hello, Harry,' and let me
introduce you. It would mean so much to me."
Iacocca agreed. He waited for the man to sit down and then walked toward
his table.
"Holy smoke!" cried one of Harry's friends. "It's Lee Iacocca, and he's
heading this way!"
"Hello, Harry!" Iacocca said. "Introduce me to your friends."
Harry looked at him blankly "Come back later, Lee," he said. "We're trying
to have lunch."

An elderly man on the beach found a magic lamp. He picked it up and a genie
appeared. "Because you have freed me," the genie said, "I will grant you
a wish."
The man thought for a moment and then responded, "My brother and I had
a fight 30 years ago and he hasn't spoken to me since. I wish that he'll
finally forgive me."
There was a thunderclap, and the genie declared, "Your wish has been
granted. You know," the genie continued, "most men would have asked for
wealth or fame. But you only wanted the love of your brother. Is it because
you are old and dying?"
"No way!" the man cried. "But my brother is, and he's worth about $60 million."

*represent 설명하다 explain; make clear:
Let me try to represent my ideas in another way.

*interfere 방해하다 get in the way of another; block the action of another:
The noise interferes with my work.

Very early in my boyhood I had acquired the habit of going about alone
to amuse myself in my own way.
My mother would miss me when looking out to see what the children were
doing, and I would be called and searched for, to be found hidden away
somewhere in the wood.
This distressed her very much; then to her relief and joy she discovered
that I was there with a motive which she could understand: that I was
watching some living things.
And as she loved all living things herself, she was quite satisfied that
I was not going queer in my head, for that was what she had been fearing.
