2) ~의 돌아오는 길에: on one's way (back) from ~
3) 처음의 예정에는 없었다: was not my first plan [or schedule]; did not arrange
Many young Koreans went to America to see and hear a lot then.

1) 빠지다: yield to ~; be reduced to ~
2) 국제적 심성을 기르다: cultivate an international spirit [or mind]

Everybody would like to make a trip to some distant stars in the space as well as into the future and past.
But we know that we could not make such a trip by means of an ordinary vehicle.
It would take thousands of years to reach the nearest star ever at the speed of millions of immensity of the space by all means.
That is to say, we must dash through the space by means of some mysterious method of transportation.
But, to achieve this exploit we should know much more than we do now about space and time.
Do we really know what space is? Probably the answer is "No". It is fortunate, however, that we can now control the space.

(ANS 2) Any country has its dialects besides the standard language. Therefore, in studying English we must not neglect our studies in various dialects of England and America if we want to master English thoroughly.

[比較] regardless, irregardless, irrespective
I will leave irregardless of what he says라고 하는 수가 있지만, 무식한 비표준적인 용법이다.
The arrangements must be made regardless of (or irrespective of) his personal feelings in the matter.
I'll do it regardless(하여간 그것을 하겠다)는 regardless of what you think(네가 어떻게 생각하든 상관없이), regardless of that might happen(무슨 일이 일어나든 상관없다)의 뜻이다.
regret, sorry, deplore, lament
Mr. Lee regrets that he will be unable to accept the kind invitation of Mr. Kim for the sixteenth.
I'm sorry I made you cry.
He deplored the conduct of compatriots in European cities.
He paused to lament the brave men who were not there to hear him speak.
I lament that your conduct has made it necessary for me to speak to your father.

We must understand that the dream or vision will always be beyond the accomplishment.
This painful separation of what we wish to be and what we are will remain as long as we are human.
For, as accomplishment approaches vision, it is natural for man to extend and broaden the vision.
This painful separation of dream and accomplishment does not discourage man.
Rather, he is encouraged by the strain created by this separation, which is probably the chief cause of all growth.

Cars appeared all over America and gradually replaced the horse and cart.
People welcomed this development.
Unfortunately, however, cars were neither safer nor did they stop pollution.
Whether we like it or not, our lives today are dominated by the motor car.
Yet, despite its importance, the car as we know it will soon no longer exist.
Before long it will use up all the fuel, which means that either new fuels must be found or the car will disappear from the face of the earth forever.

If you get a blow-out while you are driving, you should know what to do.
A blow-out is a sudden flat tire.
It can be a very frightening experience, especially if you are traveling at high speeds.
If your car gets a blow out, the first thing to do is to hold very tightly to the steering wheel.
You can easily lose control of the car if you do not have a good hold of the steering wheel.
The next step is to get off the road.
However, you must not try to stop or turn too quickly.
After you check the traffic, you should move over to the side of the road and slow down gradually.
Then you should turn on your flashing lights so other cars can see you.

Credit card misuse remains at an alarmingly high level.
It is a cause not only of personal tragedies, but also of more serious social problems.
But how can we deal with this situation?
Whatever solution we choose, it must focus on changing consumers' spending habits for the better.
Up to now, people have been encouraged to use credit cards for various reasons.
This was good for those who used their cards wisely, but many have taken on large debts as a result.
Now is the time, therefore, to emphasize sensible individual credit card use.
Various financial support programs can be helpful in this, but unless consumers spend within their means, there can be no solution.

Every human being will grow older and die.
Aging in itself is not a disease or a sickness, but as people age, disease often follows and the elderly need others' help.
In addition, the percentage of senior citizens in the world has increased very quickly, and our society is no exception.
The problem for us is that we have left the care of the elderly to their families.
We must change our attitude toward this issue and develop more systematic social programs.
The sooner we realize the importance of the role of government in this matter, the smaller the final cost to society as a whole will be.

We are all very glad that the new train line has opened to take people to Euro-Disney.
However, I must report that the trains are very crowded and uncomfortable.
This is especially true at the busiest times when many people are trying to get to work.
In order to attract more visitors to the park, we must put more trains in service during peak hours.
There are also many tourists who do not speak French; therefore, we need train employees who speak English and other languages.
If we do this, I'm sure more visitors will come to Euro-Disney in comfort and safety.

When two people have troubles with each other, they often look to the law to decide who is right and who is wrong.
Laws exist so that there are guidelines for behavior ― what is the right thing to do and what is not right.
Unfortunately, as lawyer Peter Smith says in his book, the two sides in a court case can never really win.
The ones who “win” are the lawyers.
Even when one person is the “winner” in a court case, that person must pay his or her lawyers, must pay court costs, and suffers from bad feelings
― particularly the hostility of the other person in the case.
So Peter Smith suggests another solution that can save you from wasting time and money.

They put stiffness into your skeletal system and keep your bones from turning rubbery and fragile.
Your body uses calcium for more than keeping your bones strong, however.
Calcium also helps cells to divide, it allows muscles to work,
and it plays an important role in moving protein and nutrients around inside the body.
If you do not absorb enough calcium from what you eat, to do these things, your body will take it from your bones.
Because your body does not produce calcium, you must continually replenish the supply.

The story of a drama is told by the characters.
The author communicates his ideas to the audience through the actors.
The actor does this through his actions and voice.
He must interpret the role to the audience, and in doing so he will put his unique personality on the character.
For this reason, the actor is the most important component in the drama.
Unless he speaks and moves in the manner in which the imaginary character whose part he is playing would do,
the story will not be clearly communicated to the audience.
The audience must depend solely on the actor since there can be no reasonable explanation by the author, as we find in a novel.
What the actor fails to transmit immediately is lost forever to the audience.

In an Arabic country, women cannot appear in public unless they are covered from head to toe in loose black scarves and robes.
They interpret Islam, their religion, to mean that all women should be shielded from view.
Women are also not allowed to drive.
When they ride in a car, they must sit in the back seat.
They cannot travel without male consent, either.
A wife has to obtain a permission slip from her husband before she can check into a hotel or leave the country.
Women are not allowed to work or study alongside men.
Their Islamic religion also forbids them from entering cemeteries because their mourning might distract men.

Pen designers must be aware of hundreds of requirements.
Make the pen too thin, and it will not be strong enough to stand up to the hard use of schoolchildren.
Make the middle section too thick, and it can neither be grasped properly by the fingers nor controlled with enough precision.
However, people with arthritic hands may need a thick body because they can't close their fingers entirely.
And what of those who use the pen as a measuring device or as a mechanical instrument to poke, stab, and twist?
For example, the instructions for the clock in my automobile say to set it by pressing the recessed button with the tip of a ball-point pen.

My first reaction to this story was to laugh.
But then I began to think.
How many times has our own world been on the brink of destruction?
How many asteroids came within miles of slamming into the earth?
How many times have leaders of countries almost pushed that deadly World War III button, while the rest of humanity happily went along with their lives?
I finally understood what Mr. Joseph was talking about: Our planet is fragile, and we must be careful not to break it.

Children's play has been defined as the aimless expenditure of excessive energy.
Many people do not realize, however, that play can foster development in a number of areas.
For example, playing kickball not only helps physical development by promoting gross motor skills, it also cultivates social interaction among peers.
To discuss and agree to the rules of the game, children must use language for communication.
Having fun and playing as a group promotes self-esteem and teaches skills such, teamwork, cooperation, and leadership.
So the next time you see children play, do not think of it as a meaningless activity, think of it as a process of learning.

The scientist looks for order in the appearances of nature by exploring likenesses.
For order does not display itself of itself; if it can be said to be there at all, it is not there for the mere looking.
There is no way of pointing a finger or a camera at it; order must be discovered and, in a deep sense, it must be created.
What we see as we see it, is mere disorder.

I suppose it was worth all the aggravation you caused, not to mention the potential for accidents.
You must have known that if traffic was averaging 30 mph you could shave all of two minutes off of your total travel time for every 264 car lengths that you gained.
For those who need to have things spelled out for them, here it is.

I have been called every name in the book after telling a patient that the doctor did not call in his or her prescription and I can't do anything until he does.
When the customer is out of refills and I try to explain that I must speak with the doctor before refilling the prescription, I get responses like "Is that so? Well, it will be your fault if I get pregnant!"

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.
And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.

It is clear, therefore, that the destruction of the Amazon rain forest must stop.
The harm that this destruction is causing is far greater than any benefits it might bring.
All the nations of the world must become involved in this problem, for the entire planet depends on the Amazon forest to a great extent.
This involvement must not be one-sided.
We must not expect Brazil alone to bear the responsibility or pay the cost.
Ecology is an issue that has no national boundaries.
We shall all have to make sacrifices, including contributions of money, work, and time.
Only by making such a commitment to our planet can we guarantee a safe and healthful environment for our children.

To survey national opinion in the United States, the sample must include a certain percentage of whites, blacks, Mexican Americans, and other minorities.
The sample must also include people with high, middle, and low incomes.
Last but not least, the sample must include people from the city and the country as well as people from all parts of the country.
Choosing a good sample is extremely difficult, but it is necessary to have a good sample for correct survey results.

We must not give up hope, however.
Let us cheer up, and not look only on the dark side.
Even though troubles pile up, good fortune will turn up occasionally.

In parts of Africa the farmers cut down trees and bushes so that they can till the land.
When the soil is exhausted they move on.
Most old fields can be re-cultivated after a period of rest.
Early farmers in Europe did the same.
When there was not enough unused woodland left they used a third of their fields for pasture, letting the animal manure fertilize the soil before the next tilling.
Then it was discovered that plants like clover and beans enrich the soil, so that they can be used every year.
Later, minerals were added to the soil to replace those used up by the crops.
Modern farming uses many chemicals, which must, however, be tested to see that they do not affect human and animal health.

You cannot give to anybody in this world what you do not have.
And therefore you must concentrate on getting.
You must become the most beautiful, sensitive, wondrous, magical, unique, fantastic person in the world to be able to have all of these things in order to give them away and share them.

I went to public school, and because of my total lack of interest and non-attendance I was asked to leave.
I didn't want to go there in the first place.
I was taken away from all my friends.
My father must have been very pleased to get me into the school, but in the end it was a complete waste of money.
I let him down quite badly, I suppose.
I tried several jobs but I couldn't settle down in them.
They just weren't challenging enough.
Then I realized that what I really wanted to do was live in the country and look after animals, so that's what I now do.
As a family, we're not that close, either emotionally or geographically.
We don't see much of each other these days.
My father and I are totally different, like chalk and cheese.
My interests have always been the country, but his are books, music and above all, opera, which I hate.
If he does come to see me, he's in completely the wrong clothes for the country ― fur coats, nice little leather shoes, not exactly ideal for long walks across the fields.

U.S. support for Mubarak must strike a careful balance - so as not to cast
him as little more than a U.S. puppet, imperiling his fledgling hold on his
country.

When the morning's freshness has been replaced by the wariness of midday, when the
leg muscles quiver under strain, the climb seems endless, and, suddenly, nothing will go
quite as you wish - it is then that you must not stop!

A reader must be careful, however, in judging a man from his writings:
the attitudes and values of the hero of a novel do not necessarily
reflect those of the author.

It can be said that any scientist of any age who wants to make important
discoveries must study important problems. Dull problems yield dull answers. It is not
enough that a problem should be interesting. A problem must be such that it matters what
the answer is - whether to science generally or to mankind.

A writer must be very careful to say only things that are true. He must not make
any statements or implications which are false. He must be accurate.

Changes in a developing science are not to be compared to the tearing down of
old buildings to make way for new ones, but rather to the gradual evolution of a
zoological type. We must not believe that discarded theories have been either
sterile or in vain.

Thus Europe, not Russia, must take priority in our policy-making.

If you want to learn, you must not be above asking questions.

Success often bears within itself the seed of destruction, for it may very
well cut the author off from the material that was its occasion.
He enters a new world. He is made much of. He must be almost super-human if
he is not captivated by the notice taken of him by the great and remains
insensible to the attentions of beautiful women. He grows accustomed to
another way of life, probably more luxurious than that to which he has
been used, and to people who have more of the social graces than those with
whom he has associated before. They are more intellectual and their superficial
brilliance is engaging. How difficult it is for him then to move freely still
in the circles with which he has been familiar and which have given him his
subjects!

You can spend the rest of your life worrying, and it will not change a thing.
I define worry as being unable to move in the present because of concern
about something in the future over which you have little control.
You must be careful not to confuse this definition of worrying with planning
for the future. If you are planning, and the present-moment activity
contributes to a more effective future, this is not worry. It is worry
only when you are unable to move now about a future happening.

The process we call seeing, which we all take for granted, is
unbelievably complicated. We see not `what is there' but what
we have been taught to see there. The human eye is a lens that
only receives images; these images are referred to the brain,
where they must be patterned and given meaning. And meaning is
a convention that stems from our education and our expectations.
We see things as we are, not as they are.

*load (사람이나 기계에 할당된) 작업량, 부담 the amount of work that must be done:
I have a fairly light teaching load this term.
(=I do not have many lessons to teach.)

Human folly, alas, will continue to devastate the nations with war. Men
will continue to be born who are not fitted for life, and life will be
a burden to them.
So long as some are strong and some are weak, the weak will be driven to
the wall. So long as men are cursed with the sense of possession, and
that I presume is as long as they exist, they will wrest what they can
from those who are powerless to hold it. So long as they have the
instinct of self-assertion they will exercise it at the expense of
others' happiness. In short, so long as man is man he must be prepared
to face all the woes that he can bear.

One may think that a new and strange flower would attract the eye more
readily than a known one, but it is not so: the old is discovered much
more easily than the new.
"Out of sight, out of mind," says the proverb; and conversely that which
is not yet in mind will long stay out of sight.
But when once a new flower, even a rare one, has been discovered, it is
curious how often it will soon be noticed afresh in another place:
this must be the experience of all who have made systematic search
for flowers, and it explains why the beginner will frequently see but
little where the expert will see much.

A:Are you going shopping?
B:No, I’m not. I’m on my way to the library. Where are you
going?
A:To the bookstore.
B:Oh, excuse me. I think I must take this bus. See you later.
I’m going to the library. 나 혹은 I’m on
my way to the library. Where are going?
은 going에 강세가 있지만, 상대방이 다시 Where are you going?
답 할때는 간단히 To the library. 혹은 To the bookstore.

The tragedy must be remembered so as not to be repeated.

You must realize that prosperity does not last forever.

If you would catch fish, you must not mind getting wet.

You must not expect me to give up my girlhood ways all at once.

It is very difficult for people to understand each other if they do not
share the same experience. For example, there is a folk tale that comes
from the foothills of the Himalayas. A man was trying to explain to a
blind friend what a white color is. "Well," he said,"it is like snow on
the hills." "Oh, the blind man said, "then it must be a wet sort of
color." "No, no," the man said, " it is also the same color as cotton or
wool." "Oh, yes, I understand. It must be a fluffy color." "No, it is
also like paper." "Then it must be a fragile color," said the blind man.

An ecosystem, such as a tropical rain forest, does not suddenly appear
overnight. It develops over decades of centuries. Ecosystems mature, just
as people do, from infants to adults. An open field will eventually turn
into a forest, but first it must go through several stages, similar to a
human's developmental stages.

Recently new building codes came into effect in our city. All new houses
must now be built with proper building materials so that heat will not
escape unnecessarily during the winter. The laws have had a definite
effect. There has been a fifty percent saving in the amount of natural
gas and electricity used. The city is doing other things to save energy.
Buses, partly supported by the city, transport many people throughout the
area. Many new bicycle paths were made, and today there are twice as many
bicycles as cars in the city.

into effect, be put into effect)

We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not,
most of us, choose to die. But we do choose how we shall live. We decide
what is important or trivial in life. We decide what we must do and must
not. No matter how indifferent the universe may be to our choices and
decisions, these choices and decisions are ours to make. As we decide and
choose, so are our lives formed.

One reason why stories are so popular in all cultures is that they are
generally easy to follow. The events of a story are usually told in the
order in which they occur-usually, but not always. Sometimes an author
may vary his or her style by presenting the incidents out of their
natural order. Then we as readers must rely on other clues to understand
the true sequence of events.

I Don't Wanna Cry ( Mariah Carey ) :
Once again we sit in slience
After all is said and done
Only emptiness inside us
Baby,look what we've become
We can make a million promises but we still won't change
It isn't right to stay together when we only bring
each other pain
I don't wanna cry
Don't wanna cry
Nothing in the world could take us back
where we used to be
Though I've given you my heart and soul
I must find a way of letting go
'Cause baby, I don't wanna cry
Too far apart to bridge the distance
But something keeps us hanging on and on
Pretending not to know the difference
denying what we had is gone
Every moment we're together is just breaking me down
But it hurts too much to stay around

Almost Paradise
Mike Leno & Ann Wilson
I thought that dreams belonged to other men
'Cause each time I got close
They'd fall apart again
I feared my heart would beat in secrecy
I faced the nights alone
Oh, how could I have known
That all my life I only needed you
-
(*)
Almost paradise
We're knocking on heaven's door
Almost paradise
How could we ask for more
I swear that I can see forever in your eyes
-
It seems that like perfect love so hard to find
I'd almost given up
You must have read my mind
And all these dreams I saved for a rainy day
They're finally comin' true
I'll share them all with you
'Cause now we hold the future in our hands
-
(* Repeat)
-
And in your arms salvation's not so far away
It's getting closer closer every day
-
(* Repeat)
-
Paradise paradise

-
