→ 처지와 경우에 따라: under the circumstances; under different circumstances
→ 여러 가지 경험을 끊임없이 하면서 살다: go through various experiences; go through life, continuously experiencing all sorts of; live continuously experiencing many things
→ 모든 일이 뜻대로 되면: if everything turned out all right as we wished
→ 예기치 못했던 엉뚱한 일: some unexpected things; some strange things
→ 사건이 터져 우리를 당황케 하다: things happen to upset us; things break out to embarrass us.
(ANS 1) We all go through life, each under his given circumstances, continuously experiencing all sorts of joy and sorrow, pain and pleasure, and what not. How good it would be if everything turned out all right as we wished, but in real life some strange things often happen to upset us in the most unexpected way.
(ANS 2) In life we all go through different circumstances, various experiences of joy and sorrow, pain and pleasure, and all the other ups and downs, usually in quick succession. How wonderful it would be if some unexpected things happen to frustrate us or to embarrass us in the most undreamed-of way.

So you're not at all giving any thought?
No, not at all. But that's not my style. You know me. I'm very... I keep my eye on the ball. That's the most important thing.
And that means that I'm thinking about how can I continue moving the state forward
and how can I improve the economy, how can I improve education.
* keep one's eye on the ball

Phil is not too well informed on most matters but when it comes to big league baseball, he is all but infallible.

Some of the most famous classical composers died quite young.
Among these, for example, were Schubert and Mozart, who both died in their thirties.
But not all composers have had short lives.
Bach lived until age 65 and Haydn until age 69.
Still others, like Verdi and Richard Strauss, lived on into their eighties.

Most people act superstitiously from time to time.
Many persons may joke about keeping away from bad luck by not walking under a ladder or avoiding the number 13.
But they have such beliefs anyway.
Scholars once believed that all superstitions dated back to man's early history.
But many superstitions have appeared in relatively recent times.

Go to any vacant lot and look around.
Under the “no dumping” signs you will find old tires, rusting sinks, junked refrigerators, and other trash.
There are also laws about the care of dogs, but some dog-owners seem to be ignorant of them.
They let their dogs run loose and do not clean up after them.
Perhaps the most disregarded of all laws are our traffic regulations.
More and more drivers are speeding, going through red lights, and double parking on the road.
And some drivers, apparently not even worrying about being fined,
have been parking in spaces clearly marked as reserved for the physically challenged.
These are some examples that show a lack of respect for the law.

Arthur Ashe was the first African American to become a world tennis champion.
He was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1943.
His father supervised the tennis courts in a park near their home.
As a young boy, Arthur liked to watch the tennis players.
Ron Clarity, one of the players, taught Arthur how to play tennis.
Arthur's dream was to join the U.S. Davis Cup Tennis Team.
But, in Richmond, at that time, most tennis courts were for white people only, and all the tennis officials were white.
They did not encourage Arthur to play.
However, he did not let them stop him from playing.
Arthur Ashe

Whom, then, do I call educated, since I exclude the arts and sciences and specialties?
First, those who manage well the circumstances which they encounter day by day, and who possess a judgment which is accurate in meeting occasions as they arise and rarely misses the expedient course of action;
next, those who are decent and honorable in their intercourse with all with whom they associate, tolerating easily and good-naturedly what is unpleasant or offensive in others and being themselves as agreeable and reasonable to their associates as it is possible to be;
furthermore, those who hold their pleasure always under control and are not duly overcome by their misfortunes, bearing up under them bravely and in a manner worthy of our common nature;
finally, and most important of all, those who are not spoiled by successes and do not desert their true selves and become arrogant, but hold their ground steadfastly as intelligent men, not rejoicing in the good things which have come to them through chance rather than in those which through their own nature and intelligence are theirs from their birth.
Those who have a character which is in accord, not with one of these things, but with all of them―these, I contend, are wise and complete men, possessed of all the virtues.

In most societies there are particular ways of behaving and speaking which are considered to be polite, but these are not the same in all societies.
Forms of behavior and language which are considered to be polite in one society can sometimes seem strange, insincere, or even rude in another.
When learning a new language, it is often necessary to learn new ways of expressing politeness.

In doing this I passed by many food stands where fried chicken and half-moon apple pies were piled high and made to present a most tempting appearance.
At that time it seemed to me that I would have promised all that I expected to possess in the future to have gotten hold of one of those chicken legs or one of those pies.
But I could not get either of these, nor anything else to eat.

Robots are entering into all kinds of activities.
They've even taken up hunting in some places.
Most states of the United States have very strict laws to limit the hunting of deer.
Some hunters, however, do not obey the laws and try to kill too many deer.
So, the forest services have developed a robot that looks and acts just like a deer.
This robot-deer is left in the woods near a road where people will see it.
It looks and acts just like a real deer.
But if a hunter tries to shoot it, the police come out from the woods and check his hunting license.
The hunter may have wanted to get a deer, but, instead the deer has gotten the hunter.

That all men are equal is an assertion to which, at ordinary times, no
sane human being has ever given his assent. A man who has to undergo a
dangerous operation does not act on the supposition that one doctor is
just as good as another.
And when they require Civil Servants, even the most democratic governments
make a careful selection among their theoretically equal subjects.
At ordinary times, we are perfectly certain that men are not equal.
But when, in a democratic country, we think or act politically we are
no less certain that men are equal. Or at any rate―which comes to the
same thing in practice―we behave as though we were certain of men's
equality.

The man divided against himself looks for excitement and distraction:
he loves strong passions, not for sound reasons, but because for the
moment they take him outside himself and prevent the painful necessity
of thought.
Any passion is to him a form of intoxication, and since he cannot
conceive of fundamental happiness, all relief from pain appears to
him solely possible in the form of intoxication.
This, however, is the symptom of a deep-seated malady.
Where there is no such malady, the greatest happiness comes with the
most complete possession of one's faculties. It is in the moments when
the mind is most active and the fewest things are forgotten that the
most intense joys are experienced.

There was in my house a practice of reading aloud, which I regard as of
very great importance in developing a feeling for literature.
Most moderns, I find, do not regard literature as intended to be spoken
but only as addressed to the eye, with the result that they lose all
sense of rhythm.
One of the simplest requisites of a good style is that it can be read
aloud without causing difficulty in breathing, but this requisite is
not felt by those who have never acquired the habit of reading aloud.

I can barely remember life without television. I have spent 20,000 hours
of my life in front of television. Not all my contemporaries watched so
much, but many did, and what's more, we watched the same programs and
heard the same commercials. So our generation has a tremendous amount of
experience in common. The TV programs have not affected all of us in an
identical way. If a sociologist, however, would list some of the most
important influences on our generation, television would top the list.

By the time I started middle school, I realized that most of my fellow
students had the idea that we Asian students are all smart. It's true
that some are. But what about those of us who aren't? Having to act like
a brain can be a pain. My classmates come to me for answers, but I
sometimes can't help them. Then they look at me strangely. If I were a
genius, I would not mind being treated like one. But since I am not, I
do.

What do you think are the world's greatest problems of the twenty first century?
Many scientists say that the so called "population explosion" and food supply are the most serious dangers to the future of the world.
Those who believe that the worst will happen claim that the world population is growing much faster than its food production.
But not all scientists think so.
Some scientists claim that thanks to the development of technologies the world could produce enough food to feed everybody.

Work and play here take on a different meaning, and become equivalent to servitude and freedom.
The change consists in the subjective point of view from which the distinction is now made.
We no longer mean by work all that is done usefully, but only what is done unwillingly and by the spur of necessity.
By play we are designating, no longer what is done fruitlessly, but whatever is done spontaneously and for its own sake, whether it have or not an ulterior utility.
Play, in this sense, may be our most useful occupation.
So far would a gradual adaptation to the environment be from making this play obsolete, that it would tend to abolish work, and to make play universal.
For with the elimination of all the conflicts and errors of instinct, the race would do spontaneously whatever conduced to its welfare and we should live safely and prosperously without external stimulus or restraint.

Literature is a form of human expression.
But not everything expressed in words―even when organized and written down―is counted as literature.
Those writings that are primarily informative―technical, scholarly, journalistic would be excluded from the rank of literature by most, thought not all, critics.

Certain forms of writing, however, are universally regarded as belonging to literature as an art.
Individual attempts within these forms are said to succeed if thy possess something called artistic merit and to fail if they do not.

But to work merely to earn more money than they need is, to them, not sensible.

They are ambitious but not, most of all, for money.
All that they want cannot be bought with money.
Peace cannot be bought with money and fun cannot be bought with money, nor laughter, nor time to smoke and drink tea, nor time to make flower gardens and write poetry or to talk on the hills carrying a bird cage.

The first strip to incorporate all the elements of later comics was
Rudolph Dirks's "Katzenjammer Kids," based on Wilhelm Busch's Max and
Moritz, a European satire of the nineteenth century. The "Kids" strip,
first published in 1897, served as the prototype for future American
strips. It contained not only speech balloons, but a continuous cast of
characters, and was divided into small regular panels that did away with
the larger panoramic scenes of most earlier comics.
Wilhelm Busch

Learning is connected to instruction and direction, and boys get more of
that than girls do all through school. Why? Partly because teachers tend
to ques- tion the students who they expect will have the answer. Since
girls traditionally
don't do so well as boys in such “masculine” subjects as math and
science, they're called on least in those classes. But girls are called
on most in verbal and reading classes, where boys are expected to have
the trouble. The trouble is in our culture, not in our chromosome. In
Germany, everything academic is considered masculine, most teachers are
men, and girls have the reading problems.

One of the most important weapons used during the Second World War was not a
weapon used against people, but rather a drug used against disease. The wartime
use of penicillin saved thousands of lives, In the First World War, for example,
pneumonia was responsible for eighteen percent of all the deaths in the United
States army. In the Second World War, the rate went down to less than one
percent. In addition, penicillin was instrumental in kepping wounds from getting
infected and in helping to speed the healing process of those wounds that did
become infected.

◆ foreigner ; immigrant, alien, expatriate
It is difficult for a foreigner to understand these old traditions.
Our son has married a foreigner - we hope their child will be bilingual.
Most of the immigrants in France come from North Africa.

Klaus is a German expatriate who has been living in Portugal since he sold his business.

< ONE CULTURAL DIFFERENCE > by Kevin O'brian
Money is very different in United States.
For example, I know that here, parents will try to pay for the
children's college education but you take it further.
See, after we're 18 or after we graduate college at least,
Americans are very independant people.
Now, most Americans after they leave home, their money is theirs.
They keep it for themselves.
As Koreans tend to live at home until they get married, except
for one they're at army, one they're living at University.
But if they're not in school or not in the army, they usually
live at home but Americans don't.
Americans only go back home if they are in University or if
they're in financial problems, having financial problems in most
cases.
Now here is the most important part.
Koreans usually, young Koreans, they give a lot of money, maybe
all the money I don't exactly, you would know to the home.
They work and get some money to the parents.
That's one of the advantages of children's staying at home but
also the parents really have a lot of controll over the
children's money.
If it's the children's money, parents have a lots of control.
But Americans will pay their parents some if they're living at
home.
They might pay their parents a little bit of extra money.
But often times you live there for free.
Extra money is your money. Your money is yours.
And when you get married, in America your parents try to pay for
the wedding and maybe they will give you a gift.
If you're wealthy, they might give you a house or a car. But all
of them they're very wealthy.
But, in Korea, most parents want to try to pay for the children's
first apartment and furniture.
So, it's much harder for young Americans because basically
they're expected to pay for everything for themselves.

This shows that physical contact between a boy and
a girl was absolutely prohibited in Korea.
Of course the world has changed a great deal since
the days of Confucianism. Nowadays, physical contact
between the sexes among young people is a pretty
common sight on campuses, on the streets and many
other public places..
Traditionally while physical contact between opposite
sexes were strictly prohibited, contact among the
same sex was tolerated.
I'm sure that you have witnessed many females

I am certain that many foreign newcomers in Korea
probably thought that they were homosexuals.
(M : Yeah~)(O : It stranged me too.)
However, this is far from being the truth. It is actu-
ally an expression of friendship.
Many Koreans will laugh and dismiss the Westerner's
notion that this is an act of homosexuality.
To Koreans, a show of affection or physical contact
between the same sex is just a natural phenomenon.
It is nothing more than an expression of intimacy
and friendship.
When a Korean friend of the same sex holds your

Korean cuisine can offer a few delightful surprises to your taste
buds or it can leave a new sensation in your mouth that you may
not want to experience again.
In encompasses a wide array of dishes that often involves boiling
or stirfrying many different kinds of vegetables and then season-
ing it with garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, red pepper, and onions.
Meat dishes are not as common as the aforementioned vegetable one
but when it is grilled or braised and then specially marinated it
is often very quickly devoured.
As you can imagine Korean food ranges in taste from bland to ext-
remely spicy as many of the dishes are seasoned with red peppers.
There are several foods that appear time and time again on the
dining table of a Korean family.
Firstly '밥' or rice steamed plainly or with other grains is the
main dish or the entree for all three meals of the day.
'밥' is the most important food and Koreans have it for breakfast
lunch, and dinner, in contrast to western meals where certain fo-
ods are designated to one of the three meals.
Because rice itself tastes bland it is consumed with '김치' '국'
and other side-dishes called '반찬' that give flavor to the meal.
Koreans eat a whole bowl full of rice and they consider it to be
the main food in any given meal. Without rice, one cannot have a
legitimate meal.
The next important food and porbably the most famous Korean food
is '김치.'
'김치' is an essential part of a Korean meal and this serves as
one of the '반찬' to '밥.'
'김치' is basically made up of cabbages seasoned with red pepper
powder, salt, garlic, ginger, and a few other ingredients.
Thirdly '국' or soup is usually seved with rice and '김치' It can
be prepared to taste bland or hot and a very popular soup called
'된장국' is made up of '된장' or soybean paste, tofu, and a wide
assortment of vegetables.
'국' can be had as a '반찬' or it can be mixed with rice and con-
sumed simultaneously.
These three foods '밥' '김치' and '국' are considered to be esse-
ntial components of a Korean meal.
Along with these foods however, many other '반찬' made of mostly
vegetables and some meat, crowd the table and offer alternative
flavors to the meal.

In the traditional Korean housing '사랑방' was the main room for
the head man of the household where he often studied and received
guests.
'사랑방' was usually furnished with a low writing table, bookshe-
lves, stationary chests, and a smoking tray.
It was often located right next to a garden so that he could have
a nice view from his writing table.
'안방'was the main room for the head woman of the household where
she slept in and ran the household.
It was located towards the center of all living quarters and the
rest of the household recognized this room as the place of central
authority.
This central room was the most lavishly decoreted by various chests
such as '이층장' and '삼층장' this means two and three story
clothing chests respectively.
These chests were of very high quality and in most cases the num-
ber, size and the elaborateness of these chests reflected how
well they were off in the society.
'대청' was the hall that connected the '안방' to the rest of the
rooms.
These wooden floored halls not only served as a link between roo-
ms but it also served as a pantry.
Family meetings ceremonies and other family events were held at
Finally dining rooms were not a part of traditional Korean resid-
ences. There did not exist a special quarter where all the family
member gathered to dine around a dining table.
Instead the food was carried to the individual rooms on a low ta-
ble from the '부엌' or the kitchen.
As one can imagine this was not an easy task as the cook not only
had to prepare the food but also prepare a '상' and carry it to
each room of a household.
The traditional Korean house reflected the traditional Korean fa-
mily.
The traditional house had to be big enough to accommodate the la-
rge family. But it also had to be designed so that deference and
unity could always be maintained.

'장승' is a post made of either wood or stone that was usually
placed in a pair at the entrances to villages temples and at roa-
dsides.
We can hardly find any 장승 nowadays you know it's really hard to
find thme. But it's still a part of the Korean folk tradition.
The top portion of one of the poles was carved into a figure res-
embling a male face and several Chinese characters meaning. The
Great General Under Heaven (천하대장군) were inscribed on this
pole as well.
On the other pole was a figure resembling a female face and the
Chinese characters that stand for The Female General Under Ground
(지하여장군) were inscribed on it.
If you're still having trouble picturing '장승' try to imagine a
totem pole with the aforementioned descriptions instead of the
animal figures.
A pair of '장승' was erected in front of villages temples and at
roadsides to keep off evil spirits and to ensure good fortune and
prosperity to all residents.
To make certain of their good fortune villagers held ceremonies
in honor of the spirits that resided in the two posts.
Huge festivities involving the best fod and wine followed the ce-
remonies.
In addition people performed rituals during times of hardship and
often prayed for a good harvest cure for deadly diseases and saf-
ety during a long journey.
The process of erecting a 장승 was ritualistic and a huge task in
in itself.
Firstly the raising of these posts were allowed only during the
lunar leap months that occur only once every three years.
To complicate things further the carving and the placement of the
wooden posts had to be performed on the same day.
Oh this day every single villager participated.
Women prepared the food that was to be offered to 산신 that means
mountain spirit during the ceremony while men cleaned the area
where the posts were to be erected and cut and carved the trees
that became 장승.
In most cases pine trees were used but sometimes chestnut and al-
der trees were used as well.
Its exact origins are not known but it seems to have been preval-
ent during the mid eighth century.
Interestingly the distance between villages was measured not from
the center of one to the other but from the 장승 of one village
to the 장승 of another.

WHERE IT'S AT - Names for a common symbol
-
The @ symbol has been a central part of the Internet and its forerunners ever
since it was chosen to be a separator in e-mail addresses by Ray Tomlinson in
1972.
From puzzled comments which surface from time to time in various newsgroups,
it appears the biggest problem for many Net users is deciding what to call it.
This is perhaps unsurprising, as outside the narrow limits of bookkeeping,
invoicing and related areas few people use it regularly.
Even fewer ever have to find a name for it, so it is just noted mentally
as something like "that letter a with the curly line round it".

It use in business actually goes back to late medieval times.
It was originally a contraction for the Latin word ad, meaning
"to, toward, at" and was used in accounts or invoices to introduce the price
of something ("3 yds of lace for my lady @ 1/4d a yard").
In cursive writing, the upright stroke of the 'd' curved over to the left
and extended around the 'a'; eventually the lower part fused with the 'a'
to form one symbol.
Even after Latin ceased to be commonly understood, the symbol remained in use
with the equivalent English sense of at.

Because business employed it, it was put on typewriter keyboards from
about 1880 onwards, though it is very noticeable that the designers of
several of the early machines didn't think it important enough to include
it (neither the Sholes keyboard of 1873 nor the early Caligraph one had it,
giving preference to the ampersand instead), and was carried over to the
standard computer character sets of EBCDIC and ASCII in the sixties.
From there, it has spread out across the networked world, perforce even
into language groups such as Arabic, Tamil or Japanese which do not use
the Roman alphabet.

A discussion on the LINGUIST discussion list about names for @ in various
languages produced an enormous response, from which most of the facts which
follow are drawn.
Some have just transliterated the English name 'at' or 'commercial at'
into the local language.
What is interesting is that nearly all the languages cited have developed
colloquial names for it which have food or animal references.

In German, it is frequently called Klammeraffe, 'spider monkey' (you can
imagine the monkey's tail), though this word also has a figurative sense
very similar to that of the English 'leech' ("He grips like a leech").
Danish has grisehale, 'pig's tail' (as does Norwegian), but more commonly
calls it snabel a, 'a (with an) elephant's trunk', as does Swedish,
where it is the name recommended by the Swedish Language Board.
Dutch has apestaart or apestaartje, '(little) monkey's tail' (the 'je' is
a diminutive); this turns up in Friesian as apesturtsje and in Swedish
and Finnish in the form apinanhanta.
Finnish also has kiss"anh"anta, 'cat's tail' and, most wonderfully, miukumauku,
'the miaow sign'.
