1) 하와이에 들리다: stop (over) at the Hawaiian Islands
2) ~의 돌아오는 길에: on one's way (back) from ~
3) 처음의 예정에는 없었다: was not my first plan [or schedule]; did not arrange
Many young Koreans went to America to see and hear a lot then.
We must try as often as possible to visit foreign countries to get further information about (our) life.
My uncle is well-informed, so I respect him.
You should see more of life while you are young.
ANS 1) It was not my first plan to stop over at the Hawaiian Islands on my way home from America, but while I stayed there (for) a week, I could see and hear a lot.
ANS 2) At first I did not intend to stay at the Hawaiian Islands on my way back from America. But staying there for a week added to my experience [or stock of information].

1) 깊이 감동해서: with reverence; with a deep sense of gratitude
2) 인식하다: accept; face
→ 「둘도 없는」은 말 그대로는 irreplaceable이지만, most precious; more valuable than any thing else처럼 번역하는 것이 좋을 것이다.
Don't slight your precious life. You should not put your very existence in danger.
Minho was their dearest child.
He is a treasure to the teaching staff of our university.
I cannot help reconsidering what happiness is.
ANS 1) For each one of us, life is more precious than anything else. So
I think it is very important that we should appreciate this again and accept our life with reverence.
ANS 2) The life of each one of us is extremely precious. Therefore, in my opinion t is very important for us to re-appreciate this and face our life with a deep sense of gratitude.

→ 「~의 수」는 the number of ~ 로 좋다. A number of ~ 「많은」것과 구별할 것. The number of smokers is increasing은 옳은데 More and more people smoke같은 구문도 잘 사용된다. The number of (the) smokers로 하지 말 것.
→ 「위암」 stomach cancer 또는 cancer of the stomach
ANS) The number of people who smoke is increasing, so cancer will soon be the most common cause of death.

→ 어떻게 부르면 좋을지 망설이다: have a hard time deciding what to call the occasion
→ …라고 부르는 것도 알맞지 않다: nor is it properly called~
Chusok deeply rooted in the culture of Korea; Chusok with a special importance; have a remarkable significance
(ANS) Because there are so many levels of meaning to Chusok, foreigners often have a hard time deciding what to call the occasion. It is not the same as Thanksgiving celebrations, though it includes the thanks for the harvest and the family gathering and eating. Nor is Chusok properly called an autumn moon festival, for the more important meaning to Koreans is to be found in the veneration of the family ancestors. Probably the most important thing about Chusok today is its very Koreanness. At a time when the people of this country are deeply concerned to discover and affirm their true national identity, events with a long history in the culture of Korea a special importance.

→ 때가 되었으니: since it was supper-time,…
I was well aware that it was I who should have suggested having dinner together,…
I readily accepted his idea.
(ANS) We arrived at Chonju a little after six o'clock. Yong-ok and I had to take a local bus from there and travel one more hour. I wanted to go to the bus station right away but Tol-nam suggested that since it was supper-time we all go into the town and eat something. I was well aware that it was I who should have suggested having dinner together, so I readily accepted his idea.

[比較] apt, likely, liable, prone
apt(자칫~하기 쉬운)와 likely(~함직한)는 to-부정사를 거느리는 경우 가까운 동의어가 된다.
It was an apt answer; just the sort of thing that so-and-so would be likely to say.(경우에 꼭 맞는 대답이었다.
He is apt to stammer when he is excited.(그는 흥분하면 말을 더듬기를 잘한다.)/ Cast iron is apt to break.(무쇠는 부러지기 쉽다.)
It is likely to snow today. 한편 apt는 Snow is apt to fall in Chicago in late November.
He is apt at painting.
We are liable to be overheard.(남이 우리의 말을 엿듣기 쉽다.)
He is apt to promise more than he can perform. Some of the colors are liable to fade. We are liable to be in Chicago next week. 그러나 liable은 「책임을 지는, 의무가 있는」이라는 법률적인 뜻〈Every citizen is liable for jury duty.(국민은 누구나 배심원으로 설 의무가 있다.)/ The surety is liable for the debt of his principal.(보증인은 본인의 부채를 갚을 의무가 있다.)〉에 국한해서 사용하는 것이 가장 무난하다고 말한다.
He's prone to suspect other's motives.

[比較] urge, exhort, press, importune
He urged them to accept the plan.
The preacher exhorted his congregation to live better lives.
Because it was so stormy, we pressed our guest to stay all night./ They pressed me for an answer.
She importuned her husband for more money.(or to give her more money.)

2.They will think you're quite strange and decide not to come at all.
Of course, the seconds are too short to worry about, so leave them out.
A few minutes don't matter so much, so just say "half past six" or "6:30".
On the other hand, a year is so long that everyone knows what year you are talking about.
So you don't really need to put the year in, either.
When you leave these extra details out, it gives you room on your invitation to put much more important things:

Astronomers are probably silliest about this.

What should be done with the garbage?
There is no more room for garbage.
It is not possible to burn garbage, because that pollutes the air.
So the governments are looking for ways to reduce the amount of garbage that is produced.
One way to do this is to recycle as much as possible.
Not all kinds of garbage can be recycled, of course.
The easiest things to recycle are probably glass and paper.

It is flowing to other parts of the body, helping to cool and clean them.
A soda, on the other hand, is still sitting in the stomach 15 minutes after drinking.
Sodas that have caffeine in them actually take water from the body.
So do other drinks with caffeine, such as coffee and tea.

At the moment it's a bit hard because I'm not used to living away from home.
I have to do everything for myself, like cooking, washing and ironing.
Mom used to do all that!
Studying here is very different from high school in my home town.
We have to choose which lectures to go to and when to do it, but here you have more freedom.
I'm not used to that so I often leave my essays to the last minute.
Then I have to work right through the night, which is something I've never done before.

One of the main purposes of having a hobby is to kill time.
The great developments in science and technology give us more free time to enjoy ourselves.
But people who don't know how to spend their weekends are under stress.
So having a hobby has become a “duty” in modern society.
But problems rise when people seek expensive hobbies to show off their wealth rather than because they have a personal interest in something.
This contributes to worsening the relationship between the haves and have-nots.

Jeff Lim, 66, a retailer from La Union province, northwest of Manila, has had trouble falling asleep for more than ten years.
Every night he lies awake in bed for a while, then gets up quietly so as not to disturb his wife and turns on the television.
“After watching TV for a while, I do become tired,” Lim says.
“Then I go back to bed and fall asleep.”

One of the most valuable abilities you can develop is the ability to study, which is not something you study the night before an exam.
Rather, you have to learn how to study so you can independently approach a new problem and think it through to a successful solution.
Mastering a method of doing something is also an accomplishment that can only be achieved through genuine study.
Learning to study effectively is far more important than merely acquiring particular information.

One of the most powerful kinds of storms is the hurricane.
Each year hurricanes injure more people and damage more property than any other kind of storm.
The winds lion hurricanes can reach speeds of up to 200 miles per hour.
Rail often pours down in solid sheets, causing floods and water damage.
These dreaded storms pack so much that the energy from just one day of a hurricane
could supply electricity to all of the United States for several years!

A mother wanted to teach her daughter a lesson on money.
So she gave her little daughter a quarter and a dollar for the church,
"Put whichever one you want in the collection basket and keep the other for yourself," she told the girl.
When they were coming out of church, the mother asked her daughter which amount she had given.
"Well," said the little girl, "I was going to give the dollar, but just before the collection,
the priest said that we should all be cheerful givers.
I knew I'd be a lot more cheerful if I gave the quarter, so I did.

As many factories started to be built and cities grew, there were more and more jobs in city areas.
As more people moved to cities for the jobs, they needed places to live in.
Soon houses gave way to apartment buildings.
Also, to provide goods and services for so many people, new businesses grew up in the cities.
These new businesses also needed space, and unused land was hard to find.
When most of the land was taken up, builders started to build in the only direction left―up! This is why skyscrapers were first built in the cities.

Blindness is one of the most difficult of human handicaps because our eyes are so important to our learning.
One thing making education possible and life more pleasant for the blind is the development of a system by which they are able to learn to read.
Since the blind cannot use their eyes, they are taught to use the sense of touch in their fingers.
Reading raised printed matter of the common type is very, very difficult.
The special system now used was invented by Charles, and perfected by Louis Braille.
* the sense of touch : 촉각

Reporter : What is the basic aim of the course?
Goldstein : It is to equip students with the basic skills of diplomacy.
They should know which fork to use, for which course at a banquet anywhere in the world.
They should know how to organize a full-scale world summit.
Reporter : Are all the diplomats honest people, or are they liars?
Goldstein : “An ambassador is an honest man sent abroad to lie for his country.”
So said Sir Henry Wotton in the 16th century.
Nowadays, of course, the complete diplomat needs just a few more skills.

In July 2001, the European Union passed a law requiring all food products from GM crops to be clearly marked.
Many countries have stopped further planting until there are more health checks.
Moreover, public concern is so great in some countries that food companies are ending the use of GM crops altogether.
So, people around the world are starting to ask the question: Just how safe are these new “designer” foods?

They were born out of the habit of Korean housewives of making good use of small, otherwise useless, pieces of leftover cloth.
They are easily folded and take up little space.
So they have become a part of everyday Korean customs and practices.
Although they were created for everyday use, they have added style to special occasions.
A typical example of this is to wrap wedding gifts.
They are also convenient and safe when used to carry things.
Furthermore, they are more durable, economical and environment-friendly than paper or plastic bags.

Imagine you were asked to work overtime and you didn't want to do it.
Then you were told you would get paid twice as much money.
You would probably become more cooperative.
This idea also works with children.
A few years ago, a child of mine wouldn't brush her teeth before going to bed.
Nothing we did could make her change her mind.
Then, my parenting class teacher recommended that I should give her rewards.
So I used this simple phrase, which worked wonders:
“If you go and brush your teeth now, we will have time to read three stories instead of just one.”
Whenever she heard it, she would jump up and brush her teeth right away.

The pollution of sea, air, and land harms our quality of life by affecting our health.
More serious is the possibility of the end of human life itself.
We may become so developed that we kill ourselves!
Therefore, the most recent definition of development emphasizes sustainable development:
the improvement of human quality of life within the limits of a green, healthy earth.
In other words, it is development which aims to protect, not destroy, the earth's resources.
This will make sure that our present lifestyle does not harm future generations' lifestyles.
They will also be able to get fruits from the earth.

Yesterday I ate lunch at your restaurant, which you advertised as “a dining paradise.”
It was so completely packed with people that the line snaked out the door, and by the time I reached the counter, I was exhausted.
I decided on the hamburger steak special and side dishes, but there was no potato salad left and the beans were burnt more than baked.
At the table, the truck driver sitting across from me wouldn't stop talking about highway taxes.
Finally, when I rose to leave, the waiter “kindly” yelled at me to clean up after myself.
Throwing away that plate of food was the most enjoyable part of dining at your restaurant.

The arctic tern is an extraordinary bird that makes difficult journeys.
It flies up to 35,000 kilometers every year―all around the world from the North Pole to the South Pole and back again!
That's more than any other animal.
Arctic terns fly through all types of weather, using the sun and stars to help them.
They spend almost all of their life in the air.
When they need food, they catch fish from the sea.
Some arctic terns live thirty years or moreso they travel over one million kilometers in their lifetime.
The bird is only thirty-eight centimeters long and weighs around 300 grams.

This point can be explained using the following text, “Tommy had just been given a new set of blocks.
He was opening the box when he saw his sister coming in.”
A computer would have no clue as to what is in the box, but we assume immediately that it contains Tommy's new blocks.
We do so because we know that gifts often come in boxes and that opening the box is the natural thing to do.
More important, we assume that the two sentences are connected, whereas the computer sees no reason to connect the box with the blocks.
In other words, our interpretation of this simple text is based on common knowledge and expectations that are unavailable to the computer.

The bush dog of South America has short legs but wide paws.
It lives near rivers, so the short legs and wide paws help it to swim.
The maned wolf lives in the grasslands of South America.
It has long, thin legs.
With them, the wolf can look out over the tall grasses.
The Arctic fox has tiny ears and thick fur.
As you can tell from its name, it lives in the frozen North.
There, the temperature can drop to 50 degrees or more below zero.
Because the fox’s ears are so small, they don’t lose much heat.
And the extra-thick fur helps keep the fox warm.

What would my life be like if my children didn't play sports? Well, it may be more relaxed on one hand.
However, like other parents, I can see the immense benefits sports provide our children!
Organized sports offer children of all ages the chance to exercise, to be part of a team, and to form relationships they may not otherwise have.
Working out not only helps to lessen depression, it also helps teenagers overcome the uneasiness they may feel at times as they develop and change.
And being on a sports team can be helpful and stabilizing at a time when so many things in their lives seem devastating.
And sharing in both its accomplishments and failures is a wonderful experience.

Watching Uncle Fred rowing the boat so strongly and so easily along, Mike began to feel more and more jealous of him.
His pride began to whisper that he could do it.
The little boy asked again, “Please, I want to row now.”
With a smile Fred said, “It’s not as easy as it looks.”
But he handed him the oars, knowing the water was shallow.
The boy pulled the oars back, made a great dig at the water, and missed the surface altogether.
He fell back and grabbed at the side of boat.
Instantly it turned over.
The struggling boy was gripped by Fred who was already standing in the water.
Carried to the shore in his uncle’s arms, the boy could not even look at him.

When my grandmother began to have problems in seeing, hearing and walking, a number of family meetings were held.
We discussed what we should do for her.
We talked of placing her in a nursing home, but that idea was quickly given up.
Although my grandmother would be with more people of her own age, she would see even less of her family, and that would break her heart.
Mother would not allow her own mother to grow old and weak in a strange place.
She said, “I will not let Grandmother end up in a nursing home,”
and I admire my mother greatly for this decision.
It was not an easy decision for her.
When so many others are running away from the problem of what they should do about their old parents, my mother stands out remarkably.

Students in harambee schools are aware that they are not getting as good an education as those who attend more expensive schools.
Only two harambee students in 1,000 will attend a university.
Why then do so many students continue to flock to harambee schools?
They point out that if they did not go, they would have no chance at all of going to college.
They enthusiastically tell visitors, “Yes, the chances are slim, but I think that I can succeed.”

The process of culture shock is so predictable that its stages have been systematized.
The first is the honeymoon stage, familiar to those of us who love to travel, but never stay in one place long enough to find out what follows.
In the honeymoon stage, the new country and its people seem delightful.
It almost feels more comfortable than home.
Everything is so different and charming, the people are so nice and the customs are so interesting.
Then the bloom comes off the rose.
People start to look shallow, selfish, and stupid.
The different ways of doing things do not seem interesting any more―just boring.
You start to feel exhausted all the time.
Culture shock has set in.

Are you preparing for a big test?
If so, you may want to go play some basketball in between hitting the books.
Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development.
According to a doctor's research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels in the brain stronger and more fully developed.
She claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better.

On the surface, e-commerce appears to offer a big environmental bonus by eliminating hundreds of thousands of trips to the shopping mall.
A closer look, however, reveals that e-commerce may not be so friendly to the environment.
On-line book shopping, for example, may reduce energy use by less frequent visits to bookstores, but this actually creates more serious problems.
Every book ordered on the Web is heavily packaged and travels on a transportation network.
Instead of shipping, say, 10 copies of “Harry Potter” in one box to a bookstore, 10 boxes with one copy are shipped to e-commerce customers.
After all, this method requires more plastic bags which take a long time to decay.

Asked when they feel satisfied with their life, most people say they feel so when they think they are superior to others.
That's true.
Many feelings of satisfaction or dissatisfaction have their roots in how we compare ourselves to others.
If we spend most of our time thinking only about those who have more, it's no wonder that we feel unhappy.
When we are surrounded by only those who have less, we feel grateful.
Even though we have exactly the same life either way, our feeling about our life can vary tremendously based on who we compare ourselves with.

One 10-year-old boy decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a terrible car accident.
The boy began lessons with an old judo master.
The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.
Feeling a little bored, the boy said to his teacher, “Shouldn't I be learning more moves?”
The teacher replied, “This is the only move you'll ever have to know.” Not quite understanding, the boy kept training.

Here are more ways to cut calories.
Eat a good breakfast.
By matching calorie consumption with your most active hours, you will burn calories more efficiently.
Fuel up early in the day with a low-fat-meal(cereal with skim milk and fruit, for example).
Avoid late-night eating.
Metabolic needs are lowest at night.
So calories consumed then tend to be stored as fat.
I know a man who needed to lose weight.
He didn't eat much during the day, but by evening he was greedy for pizza and ice cream.
This makes him put on 10 kilograms.

When one has been without a certain pleasure for a number of years, one is accustomed to finding on returning to it that it is not quite so delightful as one has imagined.
In the years of abstinence one had built up too glowing a picture, and the reality turns out to be something much more commonplace.
Pleasant, yes; but, after all, nothing out of the ordinary.

Prayer For Bad Times
Dear God: Help me be a good sport in this game of life.
I don't ask for an easy place in the lineup.
Put me anywhere you need me.
I only ask that I can give you 100 percent of everything I have.
If all the hard drives seem to come my way, I thank you for the compliment.
Help me remember that you never send a player more trouble than he can handle.
-
And, help me, Lord, to accept the bad breaks as part of the game.
May I always play on the square, no matter what the others do.
Help me study the Book so I'll know the rules.
-
Finally, God, if the natural turn of events goes against me and I'm benched for sickness or old age, help me to accept that as part of the game, too.
Keep me from whimpering that I was framed or that I got a raw deal.
And when I finish the final inning, I ask for no laurels.
All I want is to believe in my heart that I played as well as I could and that didn't let you down.

More than ever, an education that emphasizes general problem-solving skills will be important.
In a changing world, education is the best preparation for being able to adapt.
As the economy shifts, people and societies who are appropriately educated will tend to do best.
The premium that society pays for skills is going to climb, so my advice is to get a good formal education and then keep on learning.
Acquire new interests and skills throughout your life.

Being able to put aside one's self-centered focus and impulses has social benefits:
it opens the way to empathy, to real listening, to taking another person's perspective.
Empathy, as we have seen, leads to caring, altruism, and compassion.
Seeing things from another's perspective breaks down biased stereotypes, and so breeds tolerance and acceptance of differences.
These capacities are ever more called on in our increasingly pluralistic society, allowing people to live together in mutual respect and creating the possibility of productive public discourse.
These are basic arts of democracy.

If you want to make good use of your time, you've got to know what's most important and then give it all you've got.
That's another lesson I learned at Lehigh.
I might have had five classes the next day, including an oral quiz where I didn't want to look stupid, so I had to prepare.
Anyone who wants to become a problem-solver in business has to learn fairly early how to establish priorities.
Of course, the time frame is a little different.
In college I had to figure out what I could accomplish in one evening.
In business the time frame is more like three months to three years.

No great achievement is possible without persistent work, so absorbing and so difficult that little energy is left over for the more strenuous kinds of amusement.

Why are men so violent? Uncivilized behavior is easy to explain, but it's difficult to change.
It has more to do with how people react to fear and feelings of inadequacy than gender.
Violent behavior is a result of feeling powerless and impotent.
This applies to men and women of all ethnic groups, races and nations.

Wherein lies the value of educating aesthetic taste?
The most straightforward answer is seemingly obvious.
There is much pleasure to be derived from appreciation of fine art works, and so providing students the means to appreciate them will make their lives more enjoyable later on.
But this answer itself raises two further questions.
First, does a person's overall aesthetically derived pleasure typically increase when that person is trained to appreciate the 'higher' as opposed to 'lower' art forms?
Second, does appreciation of the 'higher' forms really depend on a person's being educated to appreciate them?
Clearly a third question is implicit here as well, namely: in what sense are the 'higher' forms higher?
The issue of requiring or even encouraging aesthetic education is tied also to the question of whether certain sorts of taste in art are objectively better than others.

You can help relieve your hard-of-hearing companion from straining to catch your words when dining out by selecting a seat in a large room with carpeting and drapes, away from the walls and kitchen.
People with hearing loss and hearing aids can best digest a conversation when background noise is absorbed by soft surroundings.
A friend with severe hearing loss may also prefer a well-lit restaurant, so she can follow your lip movement and facial expressions ―and you'll both be able to see what you're eating.
However, you may still need to rephrase―not repeat―sentences so your companion can pick up more of what you say.

Software piracy is already the biggest barrier to U.S. software companies entering foreign markets.
One reason is that software is extremely easy and inexpensive to duplicate compared to the cost of developing and marketing the software.
The actual cost of duplicating a software program, which may have a retail value of $400 or more, can be as little as a dollar or two―the main component being the cost of the diskette.
The cost of counterfeiting software is substantially less than the cost of duplicating watches, books, or blue jeans.
Given that the difference between the true value of the original and the cost of the counterfeit is so great for software, international piracy has become big business.
Unfortunately, many foreign governments view software piracy as an industry in and of itself and look the other way.

TV is more suitable for family entertainment than the radio, precisely because it makes so few demands, leaving one with plenty of attention to give to the noisy grandchild or talkative aunt.
If the programs required greater concentration, one would resent the distractions which inevitably attend the family circle.
The less demanding the program, therefore, the more outgoing and sociable everyone is, which makes for a better time for all concerned.

A truly scientific social science will seek to understand the processes of social and individual interaction―the nature and dynamics of social relations―so it can reach a more valid prediction and control of social phenomena and, at the same time, conserve the dignity and integrity of individual personality.

The social experiences and values of the old and the young have always been in conflict; if younger people did not question the advice and beliefs of their parents, little change or 'progress' would ever occur.
But with the accelerating speed of change in modern times, the conflicts between members of different generations, or between those people anxious to adjust to change and those less inclined to do so, were in danger of becoming more harmful than helpful.
Furthermore, the very phrase by which these conflicts are described, the 'generation gap', was becoming out of date.

You will not fancy that all books you may have to consult deserve careful study.
If thoroughness is a virtue to be cultivated, still more is time a thing to be saved.
The old saying, "Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well," is less true than it seems, and has led many people into a lamentable waste of time.
Many things are worth doing if you can do them passably well with a little time and effort, which are not worth doing thoroughly if so to do requires much time and effort.

More and more people express concern about the appropriate balance of work with leisure and other aspects of their lives.
Thus, they may be less willing to accept overtime assignments or to work long hours or weekends.
Further, there are growing numbers of single-parent families and families in which both spouses work.

These trends create pressures on organizations to be flexible enough in working hours so that children can be picked up from school or taken to the doctor or dentist.
There are also more pressures on organizations and communities to provide day-care centers.

Bing Crosby writes of an experience he had while traveling by train through the
Southwest many years ago.
Our train was stopped, and we were told there'd be a wait, so I walked up and down
the track behind the train. The rear brakeman, a hard-bitten little Texan, was walking
up and down, too, swinging his lantern. He came up to me and said,"They tell me that
rascal Bim Crosland's aboard. They say he's quite a singer, but as far as
I'm concerned, Larry Ross could run him in a gopher hole."
I agreed with him and thought no more of it. In the morning, there came a knock
on our door. It was the brakeman. He eyed me with a twinkle and said, "You
hoaxed me, didn't you? You're Bim Crosland yourself! Just for that, you've got to
sign my book."
So I signed it:"Bim Crosland."

Eisenhower's major virtue, which appeared less important in 1962 than it does
now, was a sense of proportion; he had an instinctive knowledge of what could be
done and, more important, what could not be done. As far back as 1951, for example,
when the French were fighting in Viet Nam, he forsaw nothing but swamps. "I'm
convinced that no military victory is possible in that kind of theater," he noted. In
1955 members of his Cabinet predicted imminent war with Red China in the Formosa
Strait. Ike knew better: "I have so often been through these periods of strain
that I have become accustomed to the fact that most of the calamities that we
anticipate really never occur."
* a sense of proportion:

Even so, poor economic management over the years has regularly
squandered these advantages, unleashing devastating bouts of inflation
as weak governments have sought to bolster their popularity by providing
easy credit and generous wages for workers.
The defeat in the Falklands could mean more of the same.

India has one of the largest film industries in the world. Its producers crank
out more than 400 feature films each year. Demand is so insatiable that the
industry is run on a shift basis and there is never a day when it is completely shut
down. Movie theaters open as early as 9 a.m.

Memory-training courses are much in vogue nowadays, and it seems to be taken
for granted that the more things we remember, the happier we are.

The pleasures of memory must certainly be rated high, but I am sure
forgetfulness also plays a part in making human beings happy.

the murder of Duncan, and many a politician has longed to be allowed to
forget his election pledges.

Some of the unhappiest people in the world are those who cannot forget
injuries inflicted on them in the past. Others are equally miserable, because
they cannot forget wrongs they have done others.
Human beings are so constituted, indeed, that they forget the things they
would like to remember, and remember the things they would prefer to forget.
The memory should be trained, I think, to overcome both those weaknesses.
