S1 : How was your English exam?
S2 : I made a lot of mistakes.
S1 : Is that why you look depressed? Don't worry. Don't be so discouraged. Everything will be all right.
S2 : I prepared for my midterms. I did my best for this test.
But this is the result. I'm disappointed at myself.
S1 : Cheer up, Chul-su ! Pull yourself together. Be positive.
There are sunny days ahead. Don't worry about it. After the rain comes fair weather.
Forget it. You have another chance next time. You will get good grades.

Don't be afraid of making mistakes.

Can you see anything wrong with the sentences?
I'll write up the correct answers on the board.

Take out the wrong word, please.

I'm sorry but I can't understand what you say.
I don't think there is anything wrong in this sentence.

T : As you see, there are two sentences on the board.
Nam-su, are there any mistakes in the first sentence?
S : I don't think there are any mistakes, but let me take a look.
T : Good boy. Please come out and draw a circle around the wrong expression.
S : (He draws a circle around the wrong expression.)
T : Perfect, thank you. Mi-ra, what do you think about the second sentence?
S : I think there is something wrong with the sentence.
T : Really? Come to the front and erase the wrong words.
T : Good, but you missed another wrong word.
Class, I'll write up the correct sentence on the board. Please copy it.

S1 : What's that big bandage on your shin for?
S2 : While running down the bleachers at the school playing field, I fell down and scraped my shin badly.
But I didn't take it seriously at that time, so I just cleaned it with rubbing alcohol, and left it that way.
That was a mistake. My scrape turned into a big sore, and now puss is oozing out of it.
It's badly infected. Now the school nurse gave me this big bandage and put me on antibiotics.

Although we all recognize that their must be changes, it is a mistake to think that every innovation is necessarily an improvement.

I can forgive an honest mistake, but I detest an attempt to cover up mistakes by lying.

It is all very well to criticize and deplore the mistakes of young people, but why don't you give them credit for their good qualities?

Let us not brood over past mistakes since they are irrevocable.

On the basis of his many years of experience as a school administrator, he had prepared an invaluable compendium of all the mistakes likely to be made by a young teacher.

Popularity polls seem to be based on the mistaken idea that the basic task of a political leader is to win immediate approbation from the people.

She may have given wrong information in court, but this was an honest mistake and certainly does not make her guilty of perjury.

We must remember that none of us is infallible; we all make mistakes.

When Mrs. Lerner wrote, "Your composition abounds in linguistic errors", all that she meant was that I had made a lot of mistakes.

When the results of her mistakes became obvious, she gained a well-deserved reputation for being an egregious blunder.

You are hypercritical in your demands for perfection; we all make mistakes.

Once I began writing my essay at 2:30 a.m.
At that time, I was proud of my material I had gathered.
However, after handing in my essay, I began to worry about what I had actually written.
Several days later, my teacher handed back the corrected essays.
Mine came back with red ink all over it.
Not only had I made a lot of spelling mistakes, but I had written strange sentences like, “Jazz, a direct result of hot dogs and hamburgers....”
Needless to say, I did not get a very good grade on that essay.

Robert: Do you think e-mail is convenient to use?
Sophia: I'm afraid not. It can take time to check and clear my e-mail box.
And it is wasteful of my time. Sometimes, the lines are busy, and it's difficult to log on.
Sometimes, the system crashes and can't be used.
Robert: Have you made mistakes when you send an e-mail?
Sophia:Yes, of course. The other day I complained about my boss in an e-mail to another employee.
I pressed the wrong key to send it, and everyone in the office got the mail, including my boss.

A true apology is more than just acknowledgement of a mistake.
It's recognition that something you have said or done has damaged a relationship
― and that you care enough about the relationship to want it repaired and restored.
It's never easy.
Admitting to being in the wrong hurts.
But once you make yourself face up to it, swallow your pride.
It can be a wonderfully cleansing and healing thing.
Being human, we all need the art of this.

Question : Are police fair to minorities?
James : Most police do treat minorities fairly.
If one officer makes a mistake, you can read about it everywhere.
Yet, thousands of police ―black, white, men, women―have been killed over the past years.
Betty : Blacks are not treated fairly.
Blacks have been in this country more than 400 years.
Yet, we are still treated as undesirables who should pack their bags and go back to Africa.
That is why we get no respect from the police.
Joe : Most of the time we forget that police are, in fact, people.
And they react in the same way we react.
On the whole they are doing a fine job.
Betty :

If necessity is the mother of invention, error is the father.
Thousands of foods we eat, products we purchase, and machines we operate came from lab mistakes and lucky accidents.
After a political cartoon illustrated a small bear encountered by President Theodore Roosevelt on a hunting trip,
children came to call their bears “Teddy.”
If a war economy had not required the nation to find a substitute for rubber,
consumers might have not experienced the joy of stretching and bouncing Silly Putty, a kind of toy made by accident.

Success is the act of trying to improve upon the things you're already doing.
It's growing and developing.
It's accepting bigger and greater challenges.
It's not being afraid of making a mistake, suffering a setback, or failing.
It's trying to do your very best.
And if, in the end, your very best wasn't quite good enough, you just have to go back to work and prepare a bit harder for the next time.
Nobody succeeds 100 percent in anything they do.
When you're able to recognize and accept this fact of life, you realize that failure and losing are as much a part of the game of life as are success and winning.

If people want to be successful in multinational business,
they must understand the cultures of other countries and learn how to adapt to them.
It’s important for them to avoid business decisions that are based on misconceptions―mistaken ideas.
One cause of them is the belief that one’s own culture’s way of doing things is better than the way of other cultures.
To avoid this, it’s necessary to study the elements of culture.

Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you, but I think it is your garbage can that has been spilled in my driveway for the past week.
Anyway, it looks like the can that has been sitting next to your porch,
and it had your name painted on it, but I could still be mistaken.
Maybe we could decide whose it is, but I don't think it is mine.
I could help you clear up the mess, or ask the trashman about it.
It probably isn't either of our faults.

Several months later, the master took the boy to his first tournament.
Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches.
The third match proved to be more difficult, but the boy used his one move to win the match.
Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.
This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced.
For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched but he went on with his match.
When his opponent made a critical mistake, the boy used his move to pin him.
The boy had won the match and the tournament.
He was the champion.

We all know that regret can make people miserable.
But regret also serves several important functions.
First, anticipating that we may regret a decision may induce us to take the decision seriously.
This anticipation may help us to see consequences of a decision that would not have been apparent otherwise.
Second, regret may emphasize the mistakes we made in arriving at a decision,
so that

should a similar situation arise in the future, we won't make the same mistakes.
And finally, regret is a signal to others that we are sorry that it happened,
which may get them to stick with us and trust us in the future.

The Tower of Pisa is the bell tower of the Cathedral.
Its construction began in the August of 1173 and continued (with two long interruptions) for about two hundred years.
Two renowned architects planned the tower, and workers began to construct it.
Soon, the builders discovered that they had made a mistake.
The ground under the tower was too soft.
One side of the building began to sink.
Work ceased, and the church structure remained unfinished for more than 150 years.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is still standing, but it continues to lean a little more each year.
People are afraid the tower might topple over some day.
Pisa

To marry a handsome figure without character, fine features unbeautified by sentiment or good nature, is the most deplorable of mistakes.
As even the finest landscape, seen daily, becomes monotonous, so does the most beautiful face, unless a beautiful nature shines through it.
The beauty of today becomes commonplace tomorrow.
Whereas goodness, displayed through the most ordinary features, is perennially lovely.
This kind of beauty improves with age, and time ripens rather than destroys it.

Class never makes excuses.
It takes its lumps and learns from past mistakes.

If you haven't done so already, I, as one of your friends, would like to give you some food for thought:
First, being single isn't so bad.
You can be married and still be plenty lonely, especially when your partner is not there for you.
I hope you will not let the fear of singlehood drive you to make the biggest mistake of your life.
Second, love can be killed.
It can be chipped away, piece by piece, until there is nothing left.
This process can go unnoticed until everything falls apart.
The easiest way to destroy love is to keep taking it and give nothing in return.

"Thank you.
If only I could stop making mistakes on those numbers!"

do over: (=repeat) ...
Your work is full of mistakes; you'd better do it over.

I first noticed you driving behind me.
You must have mistaken the space in front of my car for an invitation, since you switched lanes, accelerated and then jumped in front of me.
You were a few car lengths closer to your destination, but you still ended up traveling 30 mph.

Last week I saw a young mother driving with a child, about 2 years old, standing on the front seat.
I was so angry that I pulled up alongside her and asked, "Do you love your little girl?
The woman looked startled and replied, "Of course I do."
I said, "Well, please put her in her seat belt so you can love her longer."
In 1984, I lost twin daughters because I told myself, "Why bother with seat belts? We're only going a few blocks."
I shall never forgive myself for making that terrible mistake.
Accidents don't always happen to other people.

While trying to locate an item in the meticulously kept files of a co-worker known
for his high opinion of himself, I came upon a large folder boldly labeled: MISTAKES.
Consumed with curiosity, I opened it. The file was empty.

The first is the mistaken idea that schools exist principally to train boys and
girls to be sociable, "integrated with their group," "equipped with the skills of
social living,""adjusted to family and community cooperation."Obviously that is one
of the aims of schooling.

A central belief of the middle class in which I grew up was that the son
of a ditichdigger could become a college president, whereas the careless son of
the top family in town could easily make mistakes from which he would not
recover. These twin beliefs were not legendary;each year they were illustrated
by specific lives in our community, and are still being illustrated.

English grammar is very difficult and few writers have avoided making
mistakes in it. So heedful a writer as Henry James, for instance, on
occasion wrote so ungrammatically that a schoolmaster, finding such
errors in a schoolboy's essay, would be justly indignant. It is necessary
to know grammar, and it is better to write grammatically than not, but it
is well to remember that grammar is common speech formulated. Usage is
the only test. I prefer a phrase that is easy and unaffected to a phrase
that is grammatical.

*classic 전형적인 of a very typical and well known:
전형적인 실수 a classic mistake

The most serious threat to a person's progress arises from his efforts to
keep safe in his job, to see to it that he doesn't make mistakes.
Sometimes when we adopt "safe" attitudes we tell ourselves that we don't
disagree with the boss because we are loyal to him and the organization.
Far be it from me to belittle loyalty, but I would rather have a little
disagreement. I'd rather have someone give me an argument. Let us
remember that two men in an organization think exactly alike, we can
get along without one of them.

심각한 실수를 저지르다 make a grave mistake

The word justice is usually associated with courts of law. We might say
that justice has been done when a man's innocence or guilt has been
proved beyond doubt. Justice is part of the complex machinery of the law.
Those who seek it, undertake an arduous journey and can never be sure
that they will find it. Judges, however wise or eminent, are human and
can sometimes make mistakes.

She admitted (to her employer) that she had made a mistake.

After my release from the U.S. Navy, I answered a newspaper ad for a
forklift-operator at a soft-drink bottling company. I was taken on a
tour of the plant by the warehouse foreman, who stressed how important
it was not to break any bottles.
"In the Navy," I explained, "I wasn't allowed any mistakes with the forklift."
"What did you handle?" he asked.
"Bombs," I replied.
"Son," he said, "you're hired!"

An American, a Scot and a Canadian were killed in a car accident.
They arrived at the gates of heaven, where a flustered St. Peter
explained that there had been a mistake.
"Give me $500 each," he said, "and I'll return you to earth as if
the whole thing never happened."
"Done!" said the American. Instantly, he found himself standing
unhurt near the scene.
"Where are the others?" asked a medic.
"Last I knew," said the American, "the Scot was haggling price,
and the Canadian was arguing that his government should pay."

Our Order 2781C
We have received your letter of 28th March.
We also confirm the replacement shoes you listed in that letter have arrived and appear to be in good order.
Although we realize you have now done your best to correct your earlier mistakes, we must emphasize we consider the compensation you offer totally inadequate.
It is ridiculous to suggest you will allow us an additional discount of 12% on the next order we place with you, for we have no intention of doing any further business with you.
What we want to know is what compensation you propose to offer us now.
We also want to emphasize we have no intention of settling your account until you have allowed us an adequate discount as compensation for the very considerable inconvenience you have caused us.

나타내지만, 여기서는 bring의 뜻으로 쓰였다.take back대신에 send back을
I'll take it back to the kitchen and
get you another soup가 된다.
That's all right.=That's O. K.=No problem.
