price는 특히{상품을 구매할 경우 지불해야 되는 돈의 양} 즉 (가격)을 말하며, charge는 배달료(delivery charge)나 호텔료(hotel charge) 및 진찰료(consultation's charge) 등과 같이{서비스에 대해 지불하는 돈},즉 (대금)을 의미한다. 반면 cost는 뭔가 (제조하거나 구입하는데 소요 된 돈), 즉(원가)나(비용)을 말한다. 그밖에 요금을 말하는 단어로 rate는 "백분율로 산정된 비율이나 요금"을 fee는(변호사비 "contingency fee"나 (등록비 registration fee") 등 (법적이거나 공식적인 절차에 따르는 서비스에 대한 요금)을 말한다. 또한 fare는 (운송수단 요금)을, commission은 매출액에 대한 퍼센트(%)로 중개상(agent or middleman)에 나가는 돈을 의미한다.

price는 팔려고 내놓은 구체적인 물건에 주로 쓰인다. 파는 사람이 요구하는 금액을 말한다.

charge는 노력·봉사에 대해서 요구하는 금액을 말한다.

cost는 물건·봉사 또는 무엇이거나 획득하기 위해 소비한 것을 말하는데 이를테면, 노력 따위에 지불된 금액을 말한다. 어느 물건에 대해서 사는 이가 지불한 price는 그에게는 그 물건의 cost이다. 일상용법에서 cost가 price의 대신으로 쓰이는 수가 있다.

엄밀한 용법에서는 생산·제조·건축 따위에서 실제로 지출된 것, 「원가」를 말한다.
