In the fields black slaves picked cotton.
And as they worked, they sang of their misery, sang of hope, and sang to keep themselves working.
But soon the songs changed, and they were not sung just in the fields.
Their strong rhythms were established through hand clapping, and in the language of the slaves, jazz was born.
Jazz originally meant 'speed' or 'excitement.' but it soon became used to describe a special kind of music.

When I was growing up, television wasn't encouraged ― but I was permitted to watch return of “I love Lucy.”
And did I ever love her!
When I was six, I asked my father, a minister in San Diego, to arrange a meeting with my idol.
He tried reasoning with me, but I didn't listen.
Papa paused, looked me straight in the eye and said, “I want you to be real.”
Over the years Papa's words became increasingly important to me.
Being ‘real' meant knowing who I was, being true to myself, and standing up for my beliefs.
그러나 나는 “I love Lucy.”

Archibald Spooner was well known in England for his slips of the tongue.
He was a teacher at Oxford University and a clergyman as well.
Dr. Spooner suffered from nervousness and poor eyesight.
This may have made it difficult for him to see words correctly and to repeat them accurately.
One time he told a student that he had “hissed the mystery lectures” when he meant to say “missed the history lectures.”
He told another student that the young man had “tasted a worm.”
He meant to say that the student had “wasted a term.”
Today, this particular type of pronunciation error is often called a “Spoonerism.”
Archibald Spooner
한번은 그가 어떤 학생에게 ‘missed the history lectures'(역사 강의를 빼 먹었다)를 말하려고 하면서, ‘hissed the mystery lectures'라고 말한 적이 있었다.

Change happens to us all at some point in our life.
I am no exception.
When I was young, I went through serious growing pains.
My ankles and knees ached at night.
It hurt, and it was a little scary.
My mother told me that it had something to do with “growth plates.”
She explained that I should accept the aches and pains gladly because they meant that I was growing fast.

While shopping malls have changed our lives, not all of their effects have been positive.
Most of the shops and services found in malls are parts of large corporations.
These businesses have taken away customers from smaller shops in the area and forced them to close.
That has meant fewer individually-owned businesses and less local control over jobs.
Malls have sometimes been built on land that is important for the survival of birds and wild animals.
Wherever they are built, they cover large areas with buildings and parking lots, instead of trees or grass.
Thus, they contribute to the general loss of nature.

It was a Friday afternoon, and the last bell had just rung, which meant it was time to go home for the weekend.
Everyone was excited and hurried out of school shouting goodbye and making weekend plans.
Everyone except Sharon.
Sharon envied the other boys and girls because she wished she could be just like them.
The school was almost empty of students by the time she was ready to leave.
She wasn't in any hurry to go home because she knew what to expect when she got there.
She slowly picked up her stuff and trudged home.
Sharon

For these same reasons, the average American would be surprised if a seated passenger offered to hold her bag while she was standing.
According to our American standards, we'd have to politely refuse such an offer, believing that it would unfairly inconvenience the sitter,
that it was meant as a polite gesture, and not a genuine offer.
Another point to consider is that Americans who live in big cities have keen senses of suspicion about other people.

There is one thing which we do every time we read, whether we are aware of it or not: we come into contact with the personality of the writer.
We enlarge our acquaintance, and by so doing we enter farther into life, and however little we may meant to, we enlarge our own personality, at least if the writer whose book we are reading himself possesses a personality of any value at all.
Any book of which we say to ourselves when we have done with it, "That is a good book", we find to be so by virtue of the personality which we have been in contact with: we say so, possibly, because we find that our own self has been affected, even though only for a while.

By this time, several people were gawking, amazed that a total stranger would give someone $1.29.
Realizing that I meant what I said, the lady asked for my address so she could pay back the $1.29.
Rather than do that, I asked that she repay me by someday helping someone in need as I had helped her.
The transaction was completed, and the lady hurriedly exited.
I then asked the clerk for my change, since I had given her $2.
Well, apparently, she was so rattled that she gave the change to the lady who has just left.

How pleasant it must be to be able to look back on one's life and to realize that one "was always busy doing good and trying to do good, and advising and helping those in trouble"!
I confess, when I scan my past, I have to search very thoroughly before I can discover even one day on which I was "busy doing good and trying to do good."
I can remember several occasions on which I meant to "do good," but something, whether business or pleasure, usually intervened, and I seldom went farther in the matter.
The truth is, I am so out of practice in this business of "doing good" that I should be hard put to it to tell you what "doing good" is.

Presumably he meant to stay simply that he thought it would be easier to negotiate the Cubans out of Angola than to negotiate the white minority out of power in Southern Africa-but that is not what he said.

Manufacturers encourage the "new is better" attitude. They'll make more
money if we buy a new model as soon as the old one fails. They've even
invented items that are meant to be used once and discarded. There are
not only Paper Plates and napkins, but even disposable razors and
cameras. Also fix-it shops are getting rare. Why should we repair the old
when we can buy the new? As a result, junk yards are filled with
still-usable items. We don't reuse or recycle, which would save us money.

When there was just a gang of us
storming the town by train and bus
A moment of thought this heart sends to old friends
Not for the first time I look back on my first love
Unable to speak or think or move, hand in glove
But what of it now where is she,
she who once meant so much to me
Because we are not, I can't pretend now old friends
I was told love should hold old friends
I was told love should hold old friends
But when you leave
You will close the door behind you
And time won't make amends to old friends
Standing here with my arm around you
Life's moved on

When there was just a gang of us storming the town by train
and bus.
A moment of thought this heart sends to old friends.
Not for the first time I look back on my first love.
Unable to speak or think or move hand in glove.
But what of bit now really she who once meant so much to me.
Because we are not,I can't pretend now old friends.
I was told love should hold all the friends.
But when you leave, you will close the door behind you.
And time won't make amends to old friends.
Standing here with my arm around you,
Life's moved on.

< Last Christmas > Sung by Wham
**
Last Christmas
I gave you my heart
But the very next day
You gave it away
This year
올해는
To save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
-
**Repeat
-
Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance
But you still catch my eye
Tell me baby do you recognize me
Well it's been a year
It doesn't surprise me
-
Happy Christmas
I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying I love you I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now
I know you'd fool me again
-
**Repeat twice
-
A crowded room
Friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you
And your soul of ice
My god I thought
You were someone to rely on me
I guess I was a shoulder to cry on
-
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover
But you tore me apart
Now I've found a real love
You'll never fool me again
-
**Repeat twice
-
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover
But you tore me apart
Maybe next year I'll give it to someone
I'll give it to someone special

Reality

Met you by surprise
I didn't realize
That my life would change forever
Saw you standing there
I didn't know i'd care
There was something special in the air
-
Dreams are my reality
The only kind of real fantasy
Illusions are a common thing
I try to live in dreams
It seems as if it's meant to be
-
Dreams are my reality
A different kind of reality
I dream of loving in the night
And loving seems all right
Although it's only fantasy
-
If you do exist honey don't resist
Show me your new way of loving
Tell me that it's true,
Show me what to do
I feel something special about you
-
Dreams are my reality
The only kind of reality
Maybe my foolishness has passed
And maybe now at last
I see how the real thing can be
-
Dreams are my reality
A wondrous world where I'd like to be
I dream of holding you all night
And holding you seems right
Perhaps that's my reality

## I saw you dancing -- Yakida ##
I saw you dancing
And I'll never be the same again for sure
I saw you dancing
Say yakida my love

I saw you dancing
And I'll never be the same again for sure
I saw you dancing
Say yakida
I'm falling to pieces
Who do you think you are
Maybe I've gone too far
(** go far:~까지 가다, go too far:정도가 지나칠 정도로 가다)
Maybe I'm in love with you
(** be in love:사랑에 빠지다)
Don't hurt me and don't treat me bad
Cause I will fight for what is mine
Say Yakida
Cause life is meant for livein

### The Ain't A Love Song -- Bon Jovi ###
I should have seen it coming when the roses died
Should have seen the end of summer in your eyes
I should have listened when you said good-night
You really meant good-bye
Baby, ain't it funny
Have you never ever learn to fall
You're really on your knees when you think you're standing tall
But only fools are know it all
And I played that fool for you

##### Always - Bon Jovi #####
This Romeo is bleeding
But you can't see his blood
It's nothing but some feelings that this old dog kicked up
It's been raining since you left me
Now I'm drowning in the flood
You see I've always been a fighter
But without you I give up
Now I can't sing a love song
Like the way it's meant to be
Well I guess I'm not that good anymore
But baby that's just me

Made in heaven -- Queen
I'm taking my ride with destiny
Willing to play my part
Living with painful memories
Loving with all my heart
Made in heaven made in heaven
It was all meant to be
Made in heaven made in heaven
That's what they say, can't you see
That's what everybody says to me
Can't you see
Oh, I know I know I know that it's true
Yes! it's really meant to be

Colonization is a specific form of cultural and economic exploitation that developed with the expansion of the West over the last 400 years.
Colonies of the western empires adopted western institutions, and thus, colonization meant westernization.
Former colonies want to overcome their colonial legacy, but it dies hard.
In addition, colonized people have internalized some contradictions derived from colonial experiences.

People get married to live a happy life.
They may discover later in the marriage that they were not meant to be or the love that seemed eternal changes.
In modern day life, where the pursuit of individual happiness comes first, divorce can correct a bad choice.

The women had primary responsibility for the fields. They had to
excercise considerable skill to produce the desired results, for their
northern location meant fleeting growing seasons. Winter often lingered
; autumn could be ushered in by severe frost. For good measure, during
the spring and summer, drought, heat, hail, grasshoppers, and other
frustrations might await the wary grower.

Chaplin prefers to entertain rather than lecture. Scenes of factory
interiors account for only about one-third of the footage of Modern
Times, but they contain some of the most pointed social commentary as
well as the most comic situations. No one who has seen the film can ever
forget Chaplin vainly trying to keep pace with the fast-moving conveyor
belt, almost losing his mind in the process. Another popular scene
involves an automatic feeding machine brought to the assembly line so
that workers need not inter- rupt their labor to eat. The feeding
machine malfunctions, hurling food at Chaplin, who is strapped into his
position on the assembly line and cannot escape. This serves to
illustrate people's utter helplessness in the face of machines that are
meant to serve their basic needs.
Modern Times

While electric response audiometry is not meant to replace conventional means
of testing, it is especially effective in diagnosing hearing problems in very
young children, multiply handicapped individuals, and psychologically
disturbed persons because it does not require the patient's active
participation.

Some people never go on a date, saying that it will eventually end in breakup.
In my opinion, dating is meant to be a fun way to get to know people.
If you avoid going on a date, you could be missing out on a great opportunity that might evolve into a true friendship even if the romance doesn't last.
Of course, dating can sometimes end badly.
However, it may lead to a meaningful relationship.

I think that your company's advertisement for basketball shoes is effective.
The picture was very amusing.
I think that it would have good stopping power.
But since teenagers are in the biggest market for basketball shoes, it would be better to have a younger person in the picture.
The woman in the picture is about thirty.
Teenagers might think that these shoes are meant for older people.
