mean
mean+O+prep. :: What do you mean by that?
mean+O+O :: I mean him no offense.
mean to do :: What do you mean to do?
mean+O+to be :: He was meant for [to be] a soldier.
mean+that :: I mean that you are a liar.

[比較] what ever, whatever
What ever can it mean?(대체 무슨 말이냐?), What ever shall we do?(대체 어떻게 해야 할까?)
(b) 관계사: whatever는 복합관계사 what의 강조형으로, all that, any(thing) that(~인 것은 모두, ~인 것은 무엇이나)를 의미한다.
Eat whatever you like./ Whatever is left over is yours.
Whatever request you make will be granted.(네가 요구하는 것은 무엇이든 들어주겠다.)
형용사로 쓰이는 경우 더 한층 강조하기 위해 any, no 따위로 수식된 명사 다음에 자리를 잡아, for any reason whatever(여하한 이유로든지)처럼 할 수 있다. for whatever reason보다 뜻이 강하다.
I have no plans whatever.
Whatever happens, we'll meet here tonight./ Whatever man told you that, it is not true.

Sorry for BARGING in like this
= intruding
I don't mean to barge in like this

Sorry for the slip of the tongue.
* 말을 잘못한 것은 slip of the tongue라고 한다.
I didn't mean it.
It was a slip of the tongue.

Let's meet halfway.
Let's go for a golden mean.
또는 Let's go for the happy medium.
우리말과 똑같은 표현은 not yield an inch이다.
ex) I'll not compromise or make any concessions.

Thank you for your business.
I want your business(with us)라고 하면 '난 당신과 거래를 하고
쓸데없이 남의 일에 참견하는 사람을 보고 keep out of this.
This is none of your business.
No admittance except on business
have no business to∼와 같은 형식으로 쓰인다.
You have no business to tell me what to do with my money
When I say I will do it, I mean business라 하면

1. You couldn't possibly.
2. I mean I don't have room for anything else.
*room n.

≫ I mean I don't have room for anything else.
=I mean I don't have time for anything else.
=I can't do anything else.

I don't want to bother you, but could you read it for me?
= Sorry to bother you, but ~
= I don't mean to be bother some, but ~

A : What do you mean?
B : Oh, I just mean, do you want to pay for them up front or after
each lesson?
A : After each lesson, please.

I didn't mean for this to happen.

I didn't mean for this to happen.

If I've hurt you in any way, I'm very sorry.
= I didn't mean to do this to you.
= I apologize for my action.

emphasis)
To say, "He little realizes," when we mean that he does not realize at all, is
an example of the kind of understatement we call litotes.

redress 시정; 보상 (remedy; compensation)
Do you mean to tell me that I can get no redress for my injuries?

Taking a child hostage and asking for money is really mean.

Jacky, you've obviously done a number of films and won accolades for it, but what takes precedence, singing or acting?
I love singing.
If I have to choose one between singing and acting, I would choose singing, of course it's more personal.
But I like acting, too.
I mean, you can be another person, that's kind of fun.

Hello. And thank you for taking my call.
I'd like to know also, if you're going to go back into the film business anytime in the distant future. Thank you.
Well, I have no plans at all for the future.
I mean, as I said to you earlier, that I'm only thinking about working here as governor, representing the people, and doing my job.
So no desire to do a film?
I have no desire to do a film. I'll tell you one thing, that I've had the greatest time during my acting career.
* go back into the film business 영화계로 복귀하다
* as I said earlier 앞서 말했듯이
* acting career 연기 경력

Sir Richard, when you were about 16,
you talked your way into your headmaster's daughter's room in the middle of the night.
And to make things worse, you were actually caught.
Yes, there was a lovely lady called Mary Ann who is the nurse at her school.

And she adopted me for a term and.....

Well, I would cross from one house to her house and climb up the fire escape.
And through the window and into her bed.
And... and... we got caught.

I want my tombstone to say that I made a difference somewhere.
I mean, I don't have to necessarily do it with an album or to any huge number of people. But, you know, to one person.
I don't want it to be for naught. I don't want all this to be, you know, a waste.
I kind of would like to think that I'm here for a reason.

Is it an ego trip for Kevin Spacey?
It's a fantasy, I mean, you know,
and by the way, I think the word "ego" gets a bad rap.
I don't think there is anything wrong with having a healthy ego.
I think you can't get through life and accomplish the things you want to accomplish
unless you have some sense that you are meant to do it.
* get a bad rap
* get through ...

You'll find the unknown word comes again, perhaps several times, and by the end of the chapter you'll have guessed its meaning.
That's how we learn the meaning of words in our own language, isn't it?
When I'm telling a story to children, they seldom stop to ask what a word means.
Even when they read, they don't run for the dictionary every time they see an unknown word.
When I read my New York Times these days I often find articles about space programs.
There are sometimes words I don't know ―and some of them are so new that they're not yet in the dictionaries.
But I'm slowly beginning to understand what some of the words mean ― simply by meeting them so often.

We are trained to control bad feelings such as anger or sorrow in public and to think before we act on them.
That doesn't necessarily mean we should make this kind of control a habit in our personal lives.
My advice? Unexpressed feelings are harmful.
If you're not alone, simply postpone them for a few moments.
Then go somewhere private and do whatever the feeling seems to want you to do.
Cry, tremble, or shake your fists.
In short, expressing feelings is good for your mental health.

Some researchers believe that many instances in which body and personality go together are due to stereotyping;
that is, we expect a certain type of person to have certain traits, so we see those traits whether they are there or not.
For example, muscular people are believed to be dominant and forceful, so we treat them as leaders.
But sometimes they are actually shy and timid.
Fat people are supposed to be happy and warmhearted, but in reality they can just as easily be depressed or mean.

If you take a closer look at your life, you'll find that you have a life purpose you've been trying to carry out.
For some people, their purpose may be as simple as raising a family or being a good friend or emotionally encouraging others.
These purposes may sound simple or insignificant, but consider how they can be a pleasure to many other lives.
Your life purpose is eventually what benefits you and others as well.
I mean, if you do something that gives you a better life and makes you feel better, it's for the benefit of all.
Sometimes, what you are aiming at may seem like an unimportant detail, but it does good to the whole.

“Unless you're unmarried, childless, and without property, writing a will is one of the most important things you can do to protect your loved ones.” says a lawyer.
If you die without a will, your estate is turned over to the state, which divides your assets according to the succession laws of your province.
This may mean costly and lengthy legal battles for your survivors, and even worse, your loved ones may not be provided for as you wished.

Once while hearing a young lady highly praised for her beauty, I asked:
What kind of beauty do you mean?
Merely that of the body, or also that of the mind?
Many a pretty girl is like a flower which is admired for its beautiful appearance, but despised for its unpleasant odor.
It is far better to acquire beauty than to be born with it.

I'm constantly amazed by the number of people who can't seem to control their own schedules.
Over the years, I've had many executives come to me and say with pride:
"Boy, last year I worked so hard that I didn't take any vacation."
It's actually nothing to be proud of.
I always feel like responding: "You dummy.
You mean to tell me that you can take responsibility for an $80 million project and you can't plan two weeks out of the year to go off with your family and have some fun?"

I mean, absolutely morally bankrupt officers who had no redeeming qualities.
People followed them out of sheer wonder for what they would do next.
You learn far more from negative leadership than from positive leadership.
Because you learn how not to do it.
And, therefore, you learn how to do it.

Our minds are far from perfect and the opportunities for cultivating them are erratic.
We have intense problems within us and few are entirely without greed, cruelty and weakness.
We are all a mixture of what we call good and bad but we have only the vaguest notions of what we really mean by good and bad.
We used to be fairly sure there were absolute standards but now they appear to be more circumstantial and relative.

It is important to understand what Americans mean when they say that they believe in equality of opportunity.
They do not mean that everyone is―or should be―equal.
Moreover, they do mean that each individual should have an equal chance for success.

Even so, poor economic management over the years has regularly
squandered these advantages, unleashing devastating bouts of inflation
as weak governments have sought to bolster their popularity by providing
easy credit and generous wages for workers.

Lee Iacocca by the phone booth. "Mr. Iacocca," he exclaimed, "the American
business hero! I've studied your career, and any success I've had comes
from trying to do as well as you. Would you do me a favor? I'm with some
colleagues. Please come by my table, say 'Hello, Harry,' and let me
introduce you. It would mean so much to me."
Iacocca agreed. He waited for the man to sit down and then walked toward
his table.
"Holy smoke!" cried one of Harry's friends. "It's Lee Iacocca, and he's
heading this way!"
"Hello, Harry!" Iacocca said. "Introduce me to your friends."
Harry looked at him blankly "Come back later, Lee," he said. "We're trying
to have lunch."

A great part of our lives is occupied in reverie, and the more imaginative
we are the more varied and vivid this will be. How many of us could face
having our reveries automatically registered and set before us?
We should be overcome with shame. We should cry that we could not really
be as mean, as wicked, as petty, as selfish, as obscene, as snobbish,
as vain, as sentimental, as that. Yet surely our reveries are as much
part of us as our actions, and if there were a being to whom our inmost
thoughts were known we might just as well be held responsible for them
as for our deeds. Men forget the horrible thoughts that wander through
their own minds, and are indignant when they discover them in others.

A teen-ager tried to purchase beer one night at the grocery store where
I work. When I asked for an ID, he became abusive and refused to leave.
I threatened to call the police, but he informed me that his friend was
on duty and "Bruce would never arrest me."
"You mean Officer Cabral?" I asked.
"Yeah," growled the teen-ager, "only I know him well enough to call him
Bruce. You have to call him Officer Cabral."
"Not really," I replied. "I usually call him Dad."

Once upon a time, a mean old mountaineer fell sick and died. As the
deceased was being carried from the house, one man bearing the coffin
stumbled, causing the coffin to strike violently into a gate-post.
The knock somehow revived the old mountaineer, who sat up yelling at
everyone in sight.
The man lived for over a year and was as mean as ever. Then he got
sick and died again. Once more the body was put in the coffin. As the
people bearing the coffin, walked by, the long-suffering widow lifted
her head and said, "Watch out for that gate-post!"

Mrs. Maul thought that $4 was a very reasonable price for a thoroughbred
police dog, so she clipped out the ad in the suburban newspaper that
proclaimed this extraordinary bargain, wrote out a check, and ordered
the dog to be shipped to her residence.
A few days later the expressman deposited on her doorstep the
meanest-looking mongrel she had ever seen.
In a rage she telephoned the man who had inserted the ad, and said,
"What do you mean by calling that mutt a thoroughbred police dog?"
"He is just that," was the solemn reply.
"Don't be deceived by his looks. He's in the Secret Service. And he
is disguised as a mongrel."

If scarcity exists, the choices must be made by individuals and
societies. These choices involve "tradeoffs" and necessitate an awareness
of consequences of those tradeoffs. For example, suppose that you have $
25 to spend and have narrowed your alternatives to a textbook or a date.
Scarcity prohibits the purchase of both and imposes a tradeoff - a book
or a date. Each choice has a consequence. The textbook might enable you
to increase your knowledge, and the date might mean an evening of
merriment.

By the year 2000, the area of the earth's forests is expected to
diminish by a fifth. Most of the loss will be in tropical forests in
developing countries and will be permanent. For developed countries, the
decline will mean price rises for wood products, but for developing
countries the impact will be more severe. Nine-tenths of the wood
consumed in the Third World is used for cooking and heating. Shortages
will mean that a larger portion of cash will be used to pay for this
basic fuel.

It is perfectly normal not to feel good. This does not mean that it is
normal to feel rotten all the time, or even to feel bad too often. "All
things in moderation." said the Greeks, and that is the rule for feeling
good and bad. A person who feels bad with reasonable regularity will
enjoy the occasional period of feeling good far more than somebody who
feels good so often that he is bored by it.

In late eighteenth- century England, population growth and
technological advances happened together and helped each other along. The
increased population brought more demand for food, and more money went
into farming. Industrialization increased wealth, and that in turn led to
more cloth and other goods. Thus, more demand was met by more supply, and
more people did not mean a lower level of life. In the twentieth century,
however, that is no longer true, as will be seen below.

The Girl With April In Her Eyes
Chris De Burgh
There once was a king who called for the spring
For his world was still covered in snow
But the spring had not been for he was wicked and mean
In his winter fields nothing would grow
And when a traveller called seeking help at the door
Only food and a bed for the night
He ordered his slave to turn her away
The girl with April in her eyes
-
Oh~~oh~ on and on she goes
Through the winter's night the wild wind and the snow
Ah~~ah~ on and on she rides
Someone help the girl with April in her eyes
-
She rode through the night till she came to the light
Of a humble man's home in the woods
He brought her inside by the fire light she died
And he buried her gently and good
Oh the morning was bright all the world snow white
But when he came to the place where she lay
His field was ablaze with flowers on the grave
Of the girl with April in her eyes

Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head
Sung By B.J.Thomas
-
Raindrops keep fallin' on my head,
And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed,
Nothin' seems to fit.
I said I didn't like the way he got things done sleepin'
on the job.
The blues they send to meet me won't defeat me.
It won't be long till happiness steps up to great me.
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red,
Cryin' not for me.
'Cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'
Because I'm free
Nothing's worryin' me--.

HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE
Bee Gees
I know your eyes in the morning sun
I fell you touch me in the pouring rain
And the moment that you wander far from me
I wanna feel you in my arms again
And you come to me on a summer breeze
Keep me warm in your love then you softly leave
And it's me you need to show
How deep is your love (x3)
I really mean to leam
'cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down
When they all should let us be
We belong to you and me
I believe in you
You know the door to my very soul
You're the light in my deepest darkest hour
You're my savior when I fall
And you may think I care for you
When you kndw down inside that I really do

Whenever You Close Your Eyes
Tommy Page
I need to know that I am in your world
That I am in Your world, baby
And I've gotta know that I am in your heart
No matter where you are wherever you go
Oh, baby, I hear you saying that you love me
I feel you touch me in the night
But that don't mean that I mean something
In your life, baby
**
Whenever you close your eyes
I want it to be my face that you see
When You go to sleep at night
Whenever you dream
I want to know that you're dreaming of me
-
So hard to know
Wish I could read your mind
Wish I could read your mind
And see in your heart
Am I there the way you're there with me
You're everywhere with me wherever I go
Oh baby, before I give my world completely
And lay my heart down on the line
I need to know it's me you're needin'
In your life, baby
** repeat
Don't you know I am so in love with you, baby
But I need to know how deep your love is for me.
** Repeat twice
-

Smile again

Images go through my mind of laughing
Wondering when we were young what love would bring
Cold and snowy days, tender first embrace
We had everything, all that life could mean

You were my life right from the start

Aristotle warned that his advice did not apply to things that are good or bad in themselves.
Truth and beauty, for example, should be sought in the highest degree, while murder, theft, and adultery are evil in any degree.
But in most affairs each person should find, through trial and self-criticism, the desired mean between extremes.
This insistence on moderation has come to be known as the philosophy of the Golden Mean.
It does not signify a pale average, or mediocre, standard; rather, it calls for the best performance of mind and body working together in harmony.

The Internet has put a fine point on people's fears that technology was gathering incredible amounts of information and misusing it.
The free flow of information allows for simpler, speedier transactions, cheap home loans, competitive interest rate credit cards, low drug prescription prices, and discounted mail order catalog clothing sales, to name but a few.
But in the new language of privacy, "always-on devices" and "pervasive computer" mean(that) a user is never disconnected from a network and communications devices become personal trackers.

Work and play here take on a different meaning, and become equivalent to servitude and freedom.
The change consists in the subjective point of view from which the distinction is now made.
We no longer mean by work all that is done usefully, but only what is done unwillingly and by the spur of necessity.
By play we are designating, no longer what is done fruitlessly, but whatever is done spontaneously and for its own sake, whether it have or not an ulterior utility.
Play, in this sense, may be our most useful occupation.
So far would a gradual adaptation to the environment be from making this play obsolete, that it would tend to abolish work, and to make play universal.
For with the elimination of all the conflicts and errors of instinct, the race would do spontaneously whatever conduced to its welfare and we should live safely and prosperously without external stimulus or restraint.

Does this mean that business will be the main beneficiary of the Internet? Maybe not.
Although for business, the Internet may facilitate cost-cutting and productivity improvement, neither necessarily brings about greater profits.
Rather, greater competition and more transparency suggest that the biggest beneficiaries may ultimately be consumers.

It is absolutely mean and cowardly for anyone to use the anonymity of the Internet to brutally attack those who have different views on controversial issues, like the latest anti-Americanism and the presidential election.
Irresponsible attacks by Netizens on people with different opinions have already become a serious social problem that threatens national harmony as well as individual happiness.

A great lover of the British Empire has said that under the British constitution even a successful rebellion is perfectly constitutional and he quotes historical instances, which I cannot deny, in support of his claim.
I do not claim any constitutionality for a rebellion successful or otherwise, so long as that rebellion means in the ordinary sense of the term, what it does mean, namely, wresting justice by violent means.
On the contrary, I have said it repeatedly to my countrymen that violence, whatever end it may serve in Europe, will never serve us in India.

Before we delve into the latest research, let's define a few terms.
Though we all have our own intuitive sense of what the words stress and fear mean, scientists use these words in very specific ways.
For them, stress is an external stimulus that signals danger, often by causing pain.
Fear is the short-term response such stresses produce in men, women or lab rats.
Anxiety has a lot of the same symptoms as fear, but it's a feeling that lingers long after the stress has lifted and the threat has passed.

A: Hello, darling. How are you?
B: Terrible, Mum. My back is killing me, the children are behaving
badly, the house is so untidy―and I'm expecting six guests for dinner.
A: Don't worry, darling. I'm coming right over to help you.
B: You're an angel! How's Dad?
A: Dad? ...... Sweetheart, you know Dad died nine years ago.
B: What number are you calling?.
A: 707-5869.
B: This is 707-5868.
A: Oh no, I dialed the wrong number.
B: Hold on, please. Does this mean you are not coming over?
A: 여보세요, 얘야.
A: 707-5869.

These are actually subordinate male ibex,
but their fights are nonetheless serious.
Losing one might mean never getting the chance to breed ever.

Americans use incomplete sentences.
For example, they say, “Later” to mean “I’ll see you later.”
Also, Americans talk too fast, so it is often impossible to understand them.
In addition, Americans use a lot of slang and idioms whose meanings nonnative speakers do not know.

Watching the talk show, you remember seeing the grocery basket of the obese people at the store.
Who is responsible for their overweight?
What makes them overweight?
They themselves!
By eating unhealthy food they gain weight as a side effect.
A long time ago, being overweight used to mean being rich, having a lot to eat.
Ironically, many Americans get fat for themselves and cry on the talk shows.
