The day began early in the morning.
I had some trouble as soon as I woke up.
Mike said he had a stomachache.
He said he would die if I didn't bring the doctor.

Driving fast last Monday, I was pulled over by a police officer.
The officer noticed that my shirt had the name of a local secondary school on it.
“I teach math,” I explained.
He smiled and said, “OK. Here's a problem. A teacher is speeding on the highway at 25 kilometers over the limit.
At $12 for every kilometer over the limit, plus $40 court costs, what is her total cost?”
I replied, “taking that total, subtracting the low salary I receive, multiplied by the number of kids that hate math,
then adding to that the fact that none of us would be anywhere without teachers, I'd say zero.”
He handed me back my license, “Actually, math was never my favourite subject. Please slow down.”

Is it possible to measure beauty?
Well, the ancient Greeks believed that all beauty could be explained with math and used a system to find what they called the “Golden Ratio.”
They found it by drawing lines between key points of a beautiful object and making calculations.
They believed that all beautiful things share the same ratio.
This idea is still popular today.
An American researcher carefully measured thousands of faces and was able to produce a “Universal Beauty Mask” based on this Golden Ratio.
According to him, how closely the mask fits can show how beautiful you are.

When we hear about wetlands such as swamps and bogs, we are often reminded of unpleasant experiences:
we get swamped with homework and bogged down in math problems.
This makes it hard to realize the importance of wetlands.
Wetlands are important to many kinds of animals and plants that live there.
Some birds nest in wetlands and others use them for rest stops during flights.
Wetlands are important to people, too.
People visit wetlands to fish, take pictures and just listen to the sounds and enjoy being outdoors.
Wetlands also help us in other ways.
They control flooding by soaking up water like a sponge and then letting it out later on.

It was a math class. The day's lesson was on how to count. "All right,
Jack,"the teacher said to the first grader. "Let's see you count."
Holding out his hand, Jack counted off the numbers. "One, two, three,
four, five."Smiling, the teacher said, "Very good, but can you count any
higher ?" Jack was very glad to do it again in front of everyone.
Lifting his hand high over his head, the boy counted off the same numbers
without changing his voice. After Jack finished, the teacher said, "No,
Jack. I mean, continue counting from six."

Learning is connected to instruction and direction, and boys get more of
that than girls do all through school. Why? Partly because teachers tend
to ques- tion the students who they expect will have the answer. Since
girls traditionally
don't do so well as boys in such “masculine” subjects as math and
science, they're called on least in those classes. But girls are called
on most in verbal and reading classes, where boys are expected to have
the trouble. The trouble is in our culture, not in our chromosome. In
Germany, everything academic is considered masculine, most teachers are
men, and girls have the reading problems.

Jane:Stop disturbing me. I can't concentrate.
Paul:Shhh…! Let me look at your paper. This math problem is beyond
me.
Jane:Don't you know that your behavior is beyond the pale? I mean
cheating is a bad thing to do.
Paul:I know my behavior is beyond the norm, but I don't want to fail
again.
Jane:The professor seems to be staring at us.
Paul:Don't worry. Whenever he sits in his chair, he falls asleep.
stare at:노려보다.
fall asleep:잠들다.

figure out these math problems?

Templar: THAT SHOULD BE ENOUGH TIME TO get out passports together
and for us to get married.
Emma : We're getting married?
Templar: Yes. I want you to be Mrs. Martin de Porres.
Emma : You're not Martin.
Templar: No.
Emma : Who are you?
Templar: I don't have a name.
Emma : That's sad. Will you have a name when we get home?
Templar: I don't have a home. When we get back you do the science
I'll do the math. We'll market your formula around the
world. WE'LL MAKE A FORTUNE.

Anna: Kate, I know you can do this.
Kate: Come on, I'LL PROBABLY JUST END UP BEING A CHECKER at the
Piggly Wiggly,
* Piggly Wiggly :
so what difference does it make?
Annd: YOU DON'T FOOL ME, Kate.
I know how smart you are.
And even checkers at Piggly Wiggly will need math, too.
Kate: No, they don't. They have those little black stripes and
all the things.
It adds it all automatic.
Anna: Look. Give up before you've ever really started is a sad
way to live your life.
You keep your talents hidden and undiscovered, you, you
only cheat yourself.

Goodspeed: Glass or plastic? Glass or plastic?
Joe : Shut the fuck up!
Goodspeed: Because if the winds change after you launch those rockets,
we're all going to die!
Joe : Shut up!
Goodspeed: And you're going to end up in either a glass jar or a plastic bag!
So, what do you say you do the math, HAND OVER THE GUN
and let's go find some rockets?!
Joe : I said shut the fuck u-!!!

Vincent: No. I, I sell cellular phones of cloned numbers.
So, how much you get from the register?
Kadeem : I don't know. Hundred, two hundred.
Vincent: Yeah. You use a gun?
Kadeem : No, I used my looks.
Of course, I used a gun. What do you think?
Vincent: Well, listen. I sell ten phones a week for $500 a piece.
I don't use a gun. Can you multiply?
Kadeem : I ain't stupid, man. I KNOW MY MATH, alright?
* ain't는 am not의 단축형.
If you're so smart, why are you up in here?
