The first firing hardens the pottery, and it is then ready to be glazed

The results of five-year breast-cancer-detection project indicate that
mammo- graphy, or breast X-raying, can detect very early cancers in
younger women as well as in those over 50, according to a report in Ca,
a journal of the American Cancer Society. Mammography detected nearly 90
percent of the 3,557 cancers uncovered through the project, which
involved annual X-rays and physical examinations of more than 280,000
women aged 35 to 74. Moreover, many of the lesions revealed by
mammography were very small cancers, previously shown to be curable in
up to 95 percent of cases.
미국 암 협회의 간행물인 Ca에 실린 보고서에 따르면, 5개년 유방암 탐지
사업의 결과 유방 X-선 조영법, 즉 유방 X-선은 50세가 넘는 여자뿐만 아니라
젊은 여자의 초기 암도 탐지할 수 있다 한다. 이 사업을 통해 유방 X-선
조영법은 그 동안 발견되지 않았던 3,557건의 암 중에서 약 90%를 탐지했다.
이 사업은 35세에서 74세 사이의 28만명을 대상으로 하여 매년 X-Ray 및
신체검사한 것을 포함하는 것이었다. 게다가 유방 X-선 조영법에 의해 밝혀진
신체 손상의 많은 경우가 아주 작은 암이었으며, 그 중 95%를 치료할 수
있음이 밝혀졌다. 이 사업은 1973년에 시작되었으나, 유방 X-선 사진은 주로
나이 많은 여자들에 의해 제한적으로 사용되었다.
