The project was begun in 1973, but mammograms were largely restricted to
older women because some experts feared the X-ray exams themselves might
induce breast cancer years later. The reports author, University of
Kansas epidemio- logist Dr. Larry H. Baker, said that the radiation dose
has now been greatly reduced, making the technique safer. He and his
collaborators are studying whether mammographic detection of cancer
actually influences survival among the younger women. It has been shown
to do so among women over 50, and annual mammograms are now recommended
for all women in this age group.
