그나마 오늘은 다행스럽게도 앞에 서 있던 차들이 모두 나가서
쉽게 차를 뺄 수 있었다. 계기판을 들여다보니 기름이 별로
없었다. 가는 도중에 기름을 먼저 넣어야겠다. 기껏 안전벨트까지
매고 보니 사이드 미러가 접힌 채로 그대로 있다. 할 수 없이
투덜거리며 다시 나와 원상태로 돌려 놓았다. 백미러와 좌우
사이드 미러를 조정하고 시동을 걸었다. 김이 서리는 것을
방지하기 위해 창을 조금 열어놓았다. 악셀레터에다 발을 올려
놓았다. 주차장에서 차를 뺄 때마다 그 놈의 사각 지대 때문에
애를 먹는다. 사각 거울이라도 장만해야지.
But, today, I was lucky. All the cars in front of my spot
were gone, so I could easily drive out. The fuel gauge on the
dashboard was on empty. I thought I'd gas up on the way. It
was only after I buckled up that I found the driver's side
mirror had been pushed back out of position. Grumbling, I got
out, set it properly, got back in the car. After adjusting
the rear view mirror and side mirrors to get a clean view, I
started the engine. I left a window open a little bit to keep
the windshield from fogging up. I put my foot on the gas
pedal. The damn blind spots make it hard for me to back out.
I'd buy a couple of extra mirrors.

걸어서 터널을 지나가자면,중간쯤 당도하면 어두움은 극에 달하고 끝은 무
한정 멀어 보이게 된다. 그러다가 터널 끝의 빛이 보이기 시작하면 반가움
이 앞서게 된다. 「터널 끝에 빛이 보이다」라는 식의'see the light at the
end of the tunnel'이라는 표현은 「고난 끝에 서광이 비치다」라는 뜻을
가진다.
A:When'll the economy of our country recover? It seems like that we're
going through an endless tunnel.
B:It's hard to say, but we'll see the light at the end of the tunnel
in a year or two.
A:But I think we should try to convince other nations that our nation
is secure enough to invest in.

나라라는 것을 확신시켜야 한다고 봅니다.
B:그렇습니다. 그리고 우리는 예를 들면 인도네시아와 같은 나라와 그들의
소요사태 때문에 교역을 피하지 말고 원료를 수입해 와야 한다고 봅니다.
A:그렇습니다. 원료를 싸게 구입할 수 있고,해외에 수출할 수 있는 제품을
만들 수 있으니까요.
