[比較] plan, design, project, scheme
plan은 넓은 뜻으로는, 무슨 일을 하거나 무엇을 만들기 위해서 미리 짜놓은 자세한 방법을 가리키는 일반적인 말이다.
ex) make plans for a trip to Europe/ What are your plans for today?
좁은 뜻으로는, 그런 방법을 용기화·약도 따위로 그려내는 것을 암시한다.
ex) plan a garden
design은 plan의 최종적인 결과를 강조하고, 그 목적을 달성하는데 쓰이는 술책·때로는 간계를 암시한다.
ex) It was his design to separate us. (그는 우리를 이간시키려고 했다.)
project는 특히 야심적이고 광범위한 plan으로, 이것을 짜내는데 기업적 태도와 상상력을 구사하는 내용을 품고 있다. 건의된 또는 시험적인 계획을 말한다.
ex) He introduced a project for slum clearance.
scheme은 공상적이거나 도저히 실현할 수 없는 plan, 또는 이기적이거나 부정직한 plan을 말하며, 음흉스러운 술책을 암시한다.
ex) a scheme to embezzle the funds(자금을 횡령하려는 음모)

【1】 chicken : 겁장이(coward);애송이
우리의 언어환경에서는 닭은 좀 모자란 것에 비유되기도 하고 여
자들에 비유되는데 영어에서도 비슷한 어감을 갖는다. chick는
병아리란 뜻외에 일반적으로 '계집애,소녀'를 지칭한다. 물론 마
약의 일종인 heroin을 뜻하기도 한다. chicken은 겁많고 아직은
미숙하다는 어감이 있다.
이밖에 chicken에 관련된 속어적 표현은 많다.
chicken feed : 하찮은 돈,작은 돈(small change or peanuts)
chicken-hearted : cowardly, timid
chicken out : 겁내서 그만두다.(to manage to get out of some-
thing, usually because of fear or cowardice)
spring chicken : 나이어린 경험없는 사람(주로 부정적 의미)
이 말은 우리가 쓰는 '영계'와 거의 같은 뜻.

It takes time and effort to change the way you think and act.
Consider the way you brush your teeth.
This is a simple habit pattern.
But a considerable amount of effort is required to change it.
Before beginning to brush, you would have to remind yourself about the new method you plan to use.
