More optimistic about the future is telecommunications equipment giant
Lucent Technologies, a major player in the Chinese market for telephone
system technology. It has been working in China for more than a decade
in the country.

Telecommunications equipment maker Lucent Technologies Inc. and Sun
Microsystems Inc., the leading Internet hardware maker, on Wednesday
said they had forged an alliance to create infrastructure needed to run
electronic business more easily over the Internet.
통신기기업체인 루슨트 테크놀로지사와 손꼽히는 인터넷 하드웨어 업체인 선
마이크로시스템즈사는 3일 전략적 제휴를 통해 인터넷 전자상거래를 원활히
수행할 수 있는 인프라를 구축하기로 했다.

Under the agreement, the two companies will use each other's products and
technology to provide faster and more flexible Internet-era products.
양사는 이에 따라 상대회사 제품과 기술을 빠르고 보다 신축적으로 이용할 수
있는 길이 열리게 됐다.
Lucent and Sun Microsystems also will jointly package and market new
communications networking products that will make it easier for
corporations and service providers to offer electronic business
services more quickly and reliably.
게다가 인터넷 서비스업체 등 관련 기업들이 전자상거래 서비스를 보다 빨리,
안정적으로 제공할 수 있게 통신네트워크 관련 제품을 공동으로 개발, 판매할
수 있을 것으로도 기대된다.

``These are the first steps in a joint effort to create the
communications environment that will support not just E-Commerce and
information services, but new electronic business models evolving in
the industry,'' said Lucent Chairman Rich McGinn.

Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent will use up to $500 million of Sun
Microsystem's Netra computer servers over seven years as the
foundation for its new wireless telephone network equipment.
뉴저지주 머레이 힐에 위치한 루슨트는 앞으로 7년 동안 5억 달러를 투입해
선의 네트라(Netra) 서버를 자사의 무선전화 네트워크 기반조성에 활용할
예정이다.

The Netra servers will be the basis for shifting Lucent's wireless
network equipment from the traditional circuit-switched architecture
common in telephone networks to a packet network architecture based on
the Internet Protocol (IP).
루슨트사는 네트라 서버를 이용해 현재 전화망에서 주로 사용되고 있는 기존의
회로교환기 구조를 인터넷 프로토콜(IP) 기반의 패킷교환기 구조로 교체하게
된다.

Meanwhile, new versions of Lucent's programmable softswitch technology
will be used on a range of Sun servers. Softswitches allow various
software and hardware to work together. The softswitch also combines
the quality and reliability of traditional voice networks with the
flexibility of IP networks.
루슨트가 개발한 프로그래머블 소프트 교환 기술도 선의 각종 서버에
활용된다. 다양한 소프트웨어와 하드웨어를 함께 작동하도록 해주는 소프트
교환 기술은 기존 음성통신망의 고품질과 신뢰성에다 IP 네트워크의 유연성을
하나로 엮어줄 것으로 기대된다.

Today, Lucent's softswitches are available on Sun's servers, and are
being used by telephone companies such as Level 3 and Global crossing.
Future versions of the softswitch, targeted for Internet service
providers and business customers, also will be made available on Sun's
servers.
소프트 교환기술은 현재 선의 서버 이외에도 레벨(Level) 3나 글로벌
크로싱(Global Crossing)과 같은 전화회사에도 이용되고 있다. 인터넷
서비스업체나 기업 고객을 대상으로 하는 신규 버전의 소프트 스위치도 선사의
서버에 사용될 예정이다.
