[比較] injure, harm, hurt, wound, damage
injure는 특히 「(생물체의 어느 부분에 그 부분이 정상적인 기능을 하지 못하게) 상처를 입힌다」는 뜻이 있고 감정을 상하게 한다는 뜻으로도 쓰인다.
He was injured in a train crash./ You can injure people by unkind words.
harm은 「해를 끼친다, 손상을 입힌다」는 뜻이고, wound는 특히 「총이나 칼과 같은 무기로 신체의 일부에 상처를 입힌다」는 뜻으로 쓰인다.
The hunter wounded the deer.
hurt는 육체적으로 상처를 입힌다는 뜻일 때 injure와 달리 아주 조그마한 부상을 가리킬 수 있다. 또한 injure와 달리 자동사로도 쓰이며 육체적인 「아픔」이나 정신적인 「고통」을 나타내기도 한다.

Many colleges are encouraging students to get out into the world and learn something practical.
Not that anyone has found a magical substitute for textbooks, term papers and lecture halls,
but most schools now recognize that real-world experience is a vital part of an education.
Two thirds of Webster's 2,200 fellow students at Barnard will do at least one internship before graduation.
Kathy O'Byrne, professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, says internships can be especially good for students' problem solving and communication skills.
“If you look at what employers want in young hires, it's just these qualities,” she says.

That root meaning never changes no matter what prefixes or suffixes you add.
Look, for example, at the two words farmer and farming.
What root supplies the essential meaning for both words?
The answer is farm.
Add the suffix er, and you refer to a person who farms.
Change that suffix to ing, and you are talking about the activity of farming.
You can change the prefixes and suffixes attached to a word, yet it will retain its original meaning.
Take away the root, and the meaning goes with it.
