주차장을 빠져나와 곧바로 지하철로 향했다. 정기권이 없어 자동
판매기에 400원을 넣고 아무리 버튼을 눌러도 표가 안나왔다.
고장난 줄 알고 기계를 발로 찼더니 역무원이 450원으로 오른지가
언젠데 아직도 모르냐고 핀잔을 줬다. 에구 쪽팔려. 승차권을
사서 개찰구를 통해 승차장으로 들어갔다. 그런데 이미 지하철
한대가 떠나고 있었다. 아깝게 한발 늦었다.
After parking the car, I ran for the nearby subway station. I
didn't have a fare card with me, so I put 400 Won into the
slot of the automatic ticket vending machine and pushed the
button. But, nothing happened. I thought the damn machine was
out of order and had eaten my money, so I gave it a real hard
kick. A station attendant came up and scolded me saying the
fare had been raised to 450 Won long ago. How embarrassing. I
bought a ticket and slid through the turnstile. I found a
train already leaving. Damn, I missed the train by a second.
1. Fare card: 정액권을 말합니다. Fare는 승차 요금이지요.
I didn't have a fare card with me 처럼 with me를 쓴 것은
"원래 가지고 있는데 안가지고 왔다"는 의미가 있습니다.
2. Slot: Slot은 동전이 들어가는 작고 길죽한 구멍이지요. 흔히
우리가 빠찡코라고 하는 도박기계는 영어를 slot machine이라고
합니다. 또, slot machine은 잡아당기는 거라 그런지, one-armed
bandit (외팔이 도둑)이라고도 하지요. 그만큼 돈먹는 기계라는
뜻입니다.
3. The damn machine was out of order: Order는 정돈된 상태,
정상 상태를 가리킵니다. 따라서 in order라고 하면
정상상태지요. Out of order는 정상 상태를 벗어나 있는 것이니까
고장났다는 의미입니다.
4. Gave it a real hard kick: 찬다고 하면 그냥 kick을 쓰지요.
민다고 하면 push를 쓰구요. 그런데 이렇게 동사를 쓸 때의
단점은 수식어구를 붙여주기가 힘들다는 것이지요. 그래서 그런지
미국 사람들은 흔히들 동사를 명사로 바꾸어 give 또는 get,
take, have에 붙여 씁니다.
Push를 이런 형태로 바꾼다면 give it a push가 되겠지요. Look할
것도 take a good look하지요.
5. Station attendant came up: 역무원이 다가왔다는 말인데요.
Come up은 자기 쪽으로 다가오는 것을 말합니다. 또 뜻밖의 일이
발생했을 때도 쓰지요.
Something came up. I won't be able to meet at 7.
일이 좀 생겼어. 일곱시에 못만날 것 같아.
6. Long ago: Long time ago와 같은 뜻입니다.
7. Slid: slide의 과거 동사지요.
8. Turnstile: 빙빙 돌아가는 개찰구.
9. Missed the train by a second: 무슨무슨 차이로 할 때 by를
씁니다. 간발의 차이로는 by a hair('s breadth) 또는 by a
whisker를 쓰지요.

◆ make, let, have
make는「…시키다」로「강제, 사역」을, have는「…하도록 가져가다, …해 받다」라는「약한 사역」,
let은「…하게 내버려두다」로「허가, 허용, 방임」의 뜻.
have
1. (사역) <남에게> 시키다[하게 하다];▶ have 대신에 get을 쓰는 것은 주로 (口)이나,
get에서는 [Ⅴ명to do]형이 되는 일에 주의. 의미상으로 have는 get보다 간접적이고 소극적인 사역을 나타냄이 보통).
Have him come here at five. 5시에 그를 여기로 오게 하시오.
I must have him help me with my homework. 그에게 내 숙제를 거들어 달라고 해야겠다.
