[比較] look, see, watch
look과 see의 관계는 listen과 hear의 관계와 같다. 즉, 전자는 후자에 대한 준비 행위를 암시한다. look은 무엇을 보기(see) 위해서 시선을 그것에 고정시키는 것 또는 한 방향으로 고정시키는 것을 가리킨다. 주의력을 가지고 시력(eyesight)을 사용하는 것을 말한다.
ex) look for violets in the spring(봄에 오랑캐꽃을 찾다)/ He refused to look in the mirror the nurse gave him.
look은 보려는 욕망의 뜻을 품고 있지만, 반드시 그 욕망이 채워진다는 뜻은 품고 있지 않다.
ex) I am looking, Mother, I can't see it anywhere.
see는 눈으로 감지하는 것(perceive with the eyes), 주의력을 집중하든 하지 않든, 보려는 의도가 있든 없든 시각적 인상을 얻은 것을 말한다. 눈을 움직여, 그 결과가 보이는 것을 말한다.
ex) animals able to see in the dark/ Once over the pass you will see the town below you.(저 고개만 넘어서면 아래에 그 마을이 보인다.)
watch는 일거수 일투족·모든 변화·위험의 낌새·좋은 기회 따위를 살피기 위해 눈으로 무엇을 좇는 것, 구경꾼이 되는 것, 바라다보는 것이나 관찰하는 것, 또는 한동안 무엇에 주의력을 집중하는 것을 말한다.
ex) watch while a procession passes/ watch something as closely as a cat watches a mouse.
[比較] sullen, glum, morose, surly, sulky
sullen은 침울하고 생각에 잠겨 말이 없는 것을 의미하고 보통 화가 난 것, 기분이 좋지 않은 것을 가리킨다.
The sullen prisoners marched along./ In a morning, I am always sullen./ Sullenness doesn't imply silence, but an ill-natured silence.
glum은 기분이 좋지 않다든가 성미가 나빠서가 아니라, 낙담하거나 의기소침에서 오는 침묵을 강조한다.

morose는 심술궂고(sour), 비사교적으로 glum한 것을 뜻한다.

surly는 sullen, morose에 퉁명스러움(brusqueness)과 거칠음(gruffness)이 덧붙은 것을 뜻한다.

The restaurant belonged to a rich man.
I only smelled the food.
However, he wanted me to pay him for the food.
And he called the judge.
The judge said I must go to the court today.
Please Taylor, can you help me?”
In the court the rich man began shouting angrily at Scott.
And the judge asked Scott to pay him right now.
Taylor stepped forward and then said, “This poor man is my elder brother. I will pay you instead.”
After he heard this, the rich man smiled, thinking about his payment.
Then Taylor took a bag of money from his belt, a bag of copper coins.
He bent down next to the rich man and shook the bag.
“Listen. Do you hear this sound?” said he.
“Of course I hear it,” shouted the rich man impatiently.
“Well, then,” answered Taylor, “the problem is solved. The debt is paid.
My brother has smelled your food, and you have heard his money.”
The poor man was saved.

When you're having a conversation with someone and he is angry, listen patiently.

You probably can recognize this situation
because it is just one of many examples where men and women quarrel.
This problem is not just Tom and Mary’s but is present in almost every relationship.
Solving this problem for Tom and Mary depends not on how much they loved each other
but on how much they understood the opposite sex.
Without knowing that women really do need to talk about problems to feel better,
Tom would continue to think Mary talked too much and resist listening to her.
Without knowing that Tom was reading the news to feel better, Mary would feel ignored and neglected.
She would persist in trying to get him to talk when he didn’t want to.
These two differences can be resolved by first understanding in greater detail how men and women cope with stress.

Subjects in the study were shown slides of light blue or beige pens.
At the same time they looked at the pens, they heard either pleasant or unpleasant music.
Later they were told to choose one of the pens as a gift.
The majority of them chose the pen they had looked at while they were listening to pleasant background music.
