1) 영국에서 교육받으신: has been [or was] educated in England; (having [or being]) educated in England
2) 말할 나위 없는: perfect; genuine
3) 최대의 결점: the weakest point: the glaring fault
He is a soldier, every inch of him.
She is a genuine lady in every respect.

ANS 1) My father, who has been [or was] educated in England, is a gentleman, every inch of him. But his weakest point is that he is too good-natured.
ANS 2) Educated in England, my father is a genuine gentleman in every respect. He is, however, a little too good-natured, and this, I think, is his glaring fault.

English literature of Korea must be regarded as of Korean Sciences because it has been taught to Korean Language at least for forty years. As it is a completely koreanized science like electro engineering politics and library science, I believe it is quite natural for korean scholars to write about it in korean language for the easy understanding of Korean people. Translation without interpretation of footnotes on it is likely to be hard to understand. So it is sometimes rather convenient to read the source language text in itself. As a result translation seems less useful. We cannot make the foreign words ours just by changing them into Korean.

Everybody would like to make a trip to some distant stars in the space as well as into the future and past.
But we know that we could not make such a trip by means of an ordinary vehicle.
It would take thousands of years to reach the nearest star ever at the speed of millions of immensity of the space by all means.
That is to say, we must dash through the space by means of some mysterious method of transportation.
But, to achieve this exploit we should know much more than we do now about space and time.
Do we really know what space is? Probably the answer is "No". It is fortunate, however, that we can now control the space.

→ 읽고 싶은 것을 읽을 수 있는 자유뿐만 아니라 출판의 자유도…: freedom to press as well as to read what you wish~
→ 언론의 자유는 freedom of speech이지만 출판의 자유는 freedom of the press이다.
→ 공동의 이익이 되다: help the common good[be of benefit to everyone]
→ 원하는 직업에 종사하다: work at any job you like
→ 정부에게 재고를 요청하다: ask the government to think it over again~[to reconsider it]
→ 공정한 재판을 받을 권리: the right to be given a fair trial
ANS) You have freedom to press as well as to read what you wish. It is freedom of the press that gives you freedom to criticize the government when you feel it will help the common good. You have freedom to own property, to go into business, to work at any job you like. You have the right to ask the government to think it over again if you feel you have treated unjustly. You have the right to be given a fair trial by a court of law if you are accused of a crime. No one can say you are guilty unless you have been proved guilty.

The Korean Chusok has no parallels./ No one has anything quite like the Korean Chusok.
→ 재임시: during the reign of~
→ 일가친척에 은혜를 베푼 조상에 감사의 제물을 바치다: offer sacrifices of gratitude to one's family ancestors for all they did for the clan and family
→ 가족이 서로 모이는 날: the day for family reunion/gathering
→ 휘영청 밝은 만월의 달빛 아래서: in the light of the full moon
→ 원무: circle dance
(ANS) Many nations have harvest festivals and Thanksgiving days, while many other cultures observe the veneration of ancestors, but no one has anything quite like the Korean Chusok. Historians tell us that the Chusok festival originated during the reign of the third king of the Silla Kingdom nearly 2,000 years ago. Chusok involves many things. It is an offering of thanks to heaven for the harvest, an appeal for the good fortune of another harvest in the next year, and an offering of sacrifices to one's family ancestors for all they did for the clan and family. In addition, of course, there are family gathering, much hearty eating, and such activities as the circle dance in the light of the full harvest moon.

I have several problems to discuss with you.

He works like a beaver. He works like a bee. He is as busy as a bee.

The wide fluctuation in Seoul's population by day and night makes

What is important is that politicians as well as the general public join
hands in the rehabilitation works and relief programs. It is
exhilarating to see that civic organizations like the Red Cross Society,
religious groups and the mass media, are now taking the lead in a
nationwide relief campaign.

Arguments in this trial boil down to whether Chun Doo-hwan and
his collaborators took an extraordinary military action because it was
necessary to probe the assassination of president Park Chung-hee as
the defense claimed, or they engineered the ``coup-like incident'' in
order to gain political power in denial of the constitutional order and in
defiance of the military chain of command. The justifiability of the
suppression of the Kwangju uprising in 1980 depends largely on the
judgment of the Dec. 12, 1979 mutiny.

Possibly the most effective way to focus on your goals is to write them down.
Although this may sound like an obvious first step, it is a step that many people ignore.
As a result, their goals often remain unfocused, and therefore unrealized.
Go to a fairly quiet place where you are not likely to be disturbed.
Make a list of every goal you have.
Include goals about finances, relationships, and your career.
Be as specific as possible.

Falling in love is like being wrapped in a magical cloud.
The air feels fresher, the flowers smell sweeter, food tastes more delicious, and the stars shine more brilliantly in the night sky.
You feel light and happy as though you are sailing through life.
Your problems and challenges suddenly seem insignificant.
Your body feels alive, and you jump out of bed each morning with a smile on your face.
You are in a state of supreme delight.

One mid-July day I visited Inner Mongolia.
There were endless fields of wild flowers.
Of 1,000 species of wild flowers, 500 herbs are used to make Chinese medicines.
About 80% of all Chinese herbal medicines are from this area.
We stayed in a Mongolian tent.
The grassland around the tent was a sea of forget-me-nots, though different from the ones I know in Korea.
Their leaves and stems seem lean and weak, yet are as hard as wires.
This is to protect them from the long, dry, cold, and windy winter, and to help them to survive through to the spring.
The blue flower is like the 'dew of the stars.'

Hayao Miyazaki, a famous Japanese director, was born in Tokyo on January 5, 1941.
As a boy, he liked to read and draw cartoons.
After graduating from university, he joined the Toei Animation Company in 1963.
There he worked on many animated movies, like the famous Puss in Boots.
In 1984, he made Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, which was based on a comic book he wrote.
Since this movie was so successful, he was able to start his own animation company.
Hayao Miyazaki
Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind라는 만화 영화를 만들었는데, 이것은 그가 쓴 만화책에 기초하고 있다.

Like most of William Shakespeare's plays, “Romeo and Juliet” is based on earlier sources,
which in this case go back to some stories popular in Italy in the late 1400s.
These stories were transformed into a poem in English by a poet named Brooke.
Today Brooke's poem has been forgotten, but Shakespeare's play lives on.
What makes Shakespeare's play live is its dramatic power and its remarkable language.
That language, beautiful as it is, may seem strange to modern readers,
especially to young readers encountering the play for the first time.
William Shakespeare

Cars appeared all over America and gradually replaced the horse and cart.
People welcomed this development.
Unfortunately, however, cars were neither safer nor did they stop pollution.
Whether we like it or not, our lives today are dominated by the motor car.
Yet, despite its importance, the car as we know it will soon no longer exist.
Before long it will use up all the fuel, which means that either new fuels must be found or the car will disappear from the face of the earth forever.

Well, as in most work situations, we have a problem here with communication.
That is, most managers do not want to hear people complain, and most employees are afraid to come right out and say what they feel.
They usually won't say what they like or don't like.
They may complain to each other during lunch or after work, but they do not complain directly to the manager.
It is important, however, for a manager to find out if he or she is doing a good job.
One way to do this is to give employees a chance to talk.
Employees need an opportunity to say what is wrong, what they don't like about the work situation, and what they would change to make their work better.

Sociologists say that people prefer the food that they grew up with.
As a cultural group, we learn to like what is available to us.
This is why in Africa some people eat termites, in Asia some people eat dog meat, and in Europe some people eat blood sausages.
Sometimes we need to change our eating habits.
If we move or travel to a new place with a different culture, our favorite meat, fruit, and vegetables may not be available to us.
As a result, we have to eat food that is different from the food we are used to.
Slowly, this strange food becomes familiar to us and our tastes change.

Puppies and kittens can be a dream for children.
However, pets that are mistreated can become suspicious of humans and more likely to bite when they grow up, says a vet in Malaysia.
“Children need to be taught that they are dealing with something that is like part of the family, not like a toy.”
Kids need to understand an animal's body language.
Growling, baring of teeth and hair standing up should all be taken as threatening.

Most rockets are used just once, then thrown away.
The space shuttle is different; it takes off like a rocket, enters space as a spacecraft, and then returns and lands on a runway like an aircraft.
The idea was to make space-flight cheaper, but the results have been disappointing.
To put the space shuttle into orbit costs up to $250 million, no less than a standard rocket.
The popular dream of ordinary people paying for a space ride is still many years away.

When we hear about wetlands such as swamps and bogs, we are often reminded of unpleasant experiences:
we get swamped with homework and bogged down in math problems.
This makes it hard to realize the importance of wetlands.
Wetlands are important to many kinds of animals and plants that live there.
Some birds nest in wetlands and others use them for rest stops during flights.
Wetlands are important to people, too.
People visit wetlands to fish, take pictures and just listen to the sounds and enjoy being outdoors.
Wetlands also help us in other ways.
They control flooding by soaking up water like a sponge and then letting it out later on.

The first thing the English teacher did was to pass around a tea bag.
She said, “I was making my usual cup of tea this morning, and I found this strange tea bag.
It smells of tea, and it looks the same as all the other tea bags in the box, but there is nothing inside it.
I'd like you to write something, using this as a metaphor.”
We got into it right away and came up with some really cool ideas.
The teacher said tea bags bring good luck, so she hung this one above her desk.

Question : What do you do to keep yourself physically fit?
Tom : When I was in college I used to play sports like baseball and basketball.
But I can't do that now, so I try to play golf every weekend.
I work mostly sitting at my desk in my office, so I like to get outside and get some fresh air.
Sue :When the weather is OK, I go jogging in the early morning almost every day.
It's fun and it makes me feel fresh all day.
In the winter I don't feel safe running in the dark, so I usually jump rope and lift weights before breakfast.
Liz :I have no weight problem, but I'm not as strong as I used to be.
I'm worried about my health, to tell the truth.
Last summer I quit smoking and next month I'm going to buy an exercise machine.
I'm looking forward to that.

Finally, the bulbs were lit and the tree became a sparkling, glittering mass.
The tree was very proud of its beauty.
“If only the other trees in the forest could see me now, how envious they would be!” thought the tree.
But Christmas was soon over and the pine tree was discarded and thrown into the yard.
It lay there sadly, its dry needles falling off one by one.
Finally, a man came and chopped it up for firewood.
In the fireplace, the wood blazed brightly, but it sighed so deeply that every sigh was like the short explosion from a gun.
The tree thought of its life in the forest as it burned and turned into ashes.

What would my life be like if my children didn't play sports? Well, it may be more relaxed on one hand.
However, like other parents, I can see the immense benefits sports provide our children!
Organized sports offer children of all ages the chance to exercise, to be part of a team, and to form relationships they may not otherwise have.
Working out not only helps to lessen depression, it also helps teenagers overcome the uneasiness they may feel at times as they develop and change.
And being on a sports team can be helpful and stabilizing at a time when so many things in their lives seem devastating.
And sharing in both its accomplishments and failures is a wonderful experience.

It is difficult to say just how urbanized the world has become.
With urban growth taking place rapidly, it is impossible even for experts to do more than provide estimates.
According to the UN data, almost half of the world’s population is now urban.
These data make the very different definitions of urban used by different countries.
Some countries count any settlement of 1,000 people or more as urban,
while others use 10,000 as the minimum for an urban settlement; and Japan uses 50,000 as the cut-off.
This, by the way, tells us that urbanization is a relative phenomenon.
In countries like Peru, a settlement of 2,000 represents a significant center.
However, a much larger concentration of people is required to count as “urban.”

If anyone, including the police, decides to drive down High Point Street on any summer night, he will find it too dangerous to pass.
The potholes have been fixed, but the speeding motorbikers are turning the narrow street into a race track as they try to outrun each other.
The bikers are roaring along the High Point Street without any police enforcement.
The police don't seem to have seen any reason to slow down the speeding motorcycles racing through the street.
It seems like a waiting game: either this summer will end without anyone getting injured, or the speeding bikes will cause a fatal accident.
There is a lot of time left in the summer season.
The city police must take immediate action for our safety.

When Jan van Eyck began painting, it was common for artists to use paints called tempera, which had egg yolk as one of the ingredients.
Artists liked tempera because it dried quickly and made very bright colors, even though it had some disadvantages
―for example, artists could not paint tiny details with it.
Therefore, when Jan learned new ways to use oil paints that had oil as a main ingredient, it was like a revolution in painting.
By using this oil paint, painters were able to express the light glowing on furniture or on people's skins.
They were able to show silk or velvet so that viewers could almost feel the material by looking at the painting.
Jan van Eyck

Our early ancestors may have used the fingers of their hands or cut notches like /// on tree branches to indicate how many apples they had picked that day.
But they must have realized that no tree branch could be long enough to count a very large number of apples.
They eventually invented names for groups of notches and, since we don't know what language they spoke,
we might as well imagine that they spoke English and said “one” for /, “two” for //, “three” for ///, or “nine” for /////////, and so on.
Thus special words did become useful substitutes for notches.

The highlight of the adventure came when our van spotted a lion lazily snoring in his sleep.
As the lion woke up, it jumped from beneath the tree and pounded towards the fear-stricken gazelles.
The lion tackled his prey from behind, and the gazelle crashed into the ground right in front of our van.
When I had recovered from the shock, the lion calmly caught his prey in the mouth, and carried it to the nearest tree.
When he feasted on his menu, I could hear the sounds of bones crunching.
When I realized myself in the van, horror in my face disappeared slowly.
I felt like the National Geographic photographer as I took pictures of the lion deeply occupied in his feast.

Language never stands still.
Every language, until it ceases to be spoken at all, is in a state of continual change.
The English which we speak and write is not the same English that was spoken and written by our grandfathers.
Nor was their English precisely like that of Queen Elizabeth‘s time.
The farther back we go, the less familiar we find ourselves with the speech of our ancestors.
So finally we reach a kind of English that is quite strange to us, as if it were a foreign tongue.

The forest, from above, was a different place.
From where I lay, it was as though I floated on the surface of a clear pond, plants seemed to stretch toward me.
Below me, paths snaked like grapevines in every direction, leading everywhere and anywhere.
Bits of dust floated and glittered in the trees of light that filled the spaces between the trees of wood.
Hugging the bough with my arms, with my whole body, I joined in its stillness.
I fed at its table, I was at rest in its bed.

A strong, healthy body can do an amazing job of resisting disease.
There are many things you can do to keep your body healthy, such as eating proper foods.
Getting plenty of sleep is another good habit.
A tired, run-down body is like a car that needs a tune-up; it does not function efficiently.
Exercise is important in reducing stress and keeping the body healthy.
Regular, moderate exercise will relieve muscle tension, keep the muscles firm, and make the heart and blood vessels healthy.
Exercise, like sleep, makes the body function more efficiently.
People who exercise regularly can even strengthen their hearts.

Earthquakes themselves are unpredictable.
Although any powerful submarine earthquake can bring a dangerous tsunami, not all such earthquakes actually result in a big wave.
Even though you have an effective detection system, it is useless if you cannot evacuate a threatened area.
Here, speed is of the essence.
Computer modeling can help show which areas are likely to be safest,
but common sense is often the best guide―run like the wind, away from the sea.
Evacuation warnings, too, should be easy to give as long as people are awake.
Radios are very effective to tell people to run.

Have you ever seen a news documentary on war or thought about the suffering that people and animals experience in a war?
This cubist painting by Picasso, called Guernica shows such experiences.
You can see a mother holding her dead child, a fallen soldier still clutching his broken sword, a woman trapped in a burning building, and a horse whose body is pierced with a spear.
All the bodies look stretched out or broken.
The figures have open mouths as though they are crying out.
The light bulb that shines on the scene gives out a light that looks like crooked, pointed teeth.

Like the moral issues surrounding suicide, the problem of euthanasia has long been in the center of thinkers' discussion.
People who favors to end the life of a terminally ill patient insist physicians only prolong the suffering of the patient.
They mean, even though he or she is facing death, the patient can choose to end his or her life to escape the unbearable pain.
But those who oppose it say there is no moral distinction between killing someone and allowing someone to die.
They regard both of them as ‘murder'.

Social sciences study the area of human behavior.
Human behavior patterns vary from place to place and group to group.
However, natural sciences are somewhat different.
When a chemist studies hydrogen, he can assume that one hydrogen atom is very much like another,
wherever it is found, and that the conditions surrounding it can be quite accurately controlled.
The same is true when a physicist measures a metal bar;
he can be quite sure that it will not stretch or shrink in length as long as natural conditions are the same.
Because of the predictable nature of their subject matter, natural sciences are often called “easy sciences.”
그것은 물리학자가 금속막대기를 측정하는 경우에도 마찬가지이다;

If you take a closer look at your life, you'll find that you have a life purpose you've been trying to carry out.
For some people, their purpose may be as simple as raising a family or being a good friend or emotionally encouraging others.
These purposes may sound simple or insignificant, but consider how they can be a pleasure to many other lives.
Your life purpose is eventually what benefits you and others as well.
I mean, if you do something that gives you a better life and makes you feel better, it's for the benefit of all.
Sometimes, what you are aiming at may seem like an unimportant detail, but it does good to the whole.

You've passed the interview and landed the job.
Now it is your first week on the job.
Is this job right for you? Is the job what you expected?
Maybe you thought you loved working alone,
but now you're stuck in a tiny office with minimal human contact,
realizing that you hate working in a secluded setting.
A job is like a marriage or having a spouse.
Sometimes you don't know it's right for you until you live with it.
So as the saying goes, “If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.”

I recall watching Das Boot as originally distributed in the U.S.―in German, with English subtitles.
It was a fabulous movie, and I thought the actors' native German language contributed substantially to the feeling of compelling unreality that gave the movie such a powerful effect.
I enthusiastically took friends to see it again some months later―after it had gotten popular and was dubbed into English
―and found that the dubbing had stripped much of the movie's dramatic power.
Exiting the theater, I didn't have the same remarkable feeling I'd had with the original,
when I'd felt like I was a German sailor escaping a steel-walled watery tomb.

I recently had an encounter with a dog owner letting his large German shepherd run free around the park.
For the third time in the last month, I asked the man to restrain the dog while I ran past with my leashed dog, and he refused.
Another man who regularly plays with his dog simply stares when I ask him to restrain his dog.
Dog owners like these two men usually say their dogs are “safe.” But I've seen apparent “hellos” escalate into vicious fights between two “nice dogs.” Dog fights are brutal and bloody affairs impossible to break up without risking serious injury.
I was seriously bitten some years ago breaking up a fight between my dog and an unleashed dog, and had to have stitches and a rabies shot as a result.
