The main opposition National Congress for New Politics (NCNP)
vowed yesterday to go all-out to take legal action against a top
ruling party official whom it charged with libeling its leader,
Kim Dae-jung.
새정치국민회의는 2일 당총재에 대한 명예훼손 발언과 관련, 신한국
당 강삼재 사무총장에 대해 법적 투쟁을 펼치는 등 총공세에 들어갈
것임을 천명했다.
The NCNP lodged a complaint with the prosecution against Rep.
Kang for libel. The prosecution, however, decided not to bring
formal charges against him last week after questioning him
secretly.
국민회의 측은 강총장을 명예훼손 혐의로 검찰에 고소했으나 검찰은
지난주 강총장을 극비 소환한데 이어 무혐의 처리했었다.
Laws against slander and libel have their place, but they must never be used to proscribe criticism of public officials.

신문에서 잘못이 없는 어떤 사람을 골라 속죄양으로 삼는다면 그 결과는 매우
끔찍할 것이다. 다행히 아직은 대부분의 사람들이 유명하지 않기 때문에
회피할 수 있지만 홍보의 방법이 점점 완벽해지면 이 새로운 형태의 사회적
박해는 점점 위험해질 것이다. 신문의 희생이 된 개인이 웃어넘기기에는
너무나 심각한 문제이다. 언론의 자유라는 원칙이 아무리 대단한 것이라도
현재의 명예훼손법이 지금보다 더 강화되어야 할 것이다.
